Today’s world is just crazy. I was invited to a house party the other day and instead of bringing regular party treats, a couple decided they would bring free Wi-Fi. Don’t you just miss the good old days when there was no Internet? People were more social, there were no Internet bullies or cyber-crimes, and there were fewer sex tapes and no Instagram* butt models. Those were the days when kids didn’t spend every waking moment looking at their cell phones. And parties were not all about taking selfies.
11. We Went Outside
Back in the day, we used to go outside and play. There was sunshine, bugs, rain and other people. We fell down from our tree houses and from our bikes. And we also got out of the house to run errands. Nowadays it’s not so easy.
Kids spend their days on Facebook* and Instagram*, posting selfies, twerking videos and nudie photos. They keep themselves entertained by Googling weird stuff like “Miley Cyrus twerking” or “Kim Kardashian breaks the internet.”
And now that we can all shop online and have our stuff delivered to us, we can stay indoors all day without ever stepping outside. All you have to do is use your Visa card to shop online or use payment services like Google Wallet or PayPal.
Need money? No problem. You don’t have to go to the ATM or the bank to deposit funds into your account. All you have to do is log into your bank account from your smartphone any time of the day and make a wire transfer.

10. We Interacted With Real People
We used to make time for all the special people in our lives. If you wanted to talk with someone, you had to plan a date and meet up. We made friends by meeting and interacting in person.
These days if you want to meet new people all you have to do is create a social media account and send out friend requests to random people.
And you don’t even need to make such a huge effort to make friends. All you have to do is create a fake online personality or post twerking videos and there you have it…. 1000 followers in one day. Heck, you can even buy them for a few bucks.

9. We Had Polite Disagreements
This is not to say that disagreements never escalated. If you had something to say to someone, you had to say it to their face and say it like a real person. We had plenty of “beef” but it only went so far. What we see on the Internet today is on a completely new level.
People hide behind their computers and post all sorts of things on the Internet. They even go as far as exposing their dirty laundry (as well as other people’s laundry) for the whole world to see.
Celebrities are especially fond of this. They don’t mind exposing their fellow celebrities’ weaknesses or blasting a fan who tries to throw “shade” their way. And the fans too can be mean to celebrities. They go as far as name calling or shaming them in some sort of way.

8. We Used The Phone Book
Before the Internet, you had to look up someone’s number in the phone book. You then had to memorize it or stick it in one of those complicated speed dial slots.
Nowadays all you need to do is Google a number on your smartphone and you are good to go. When was the last time you went through a phone book to look for a number? Even the Yellow Pages are online. Honestly, phone books are just a waste of paper.

7. We Bought Magazines
Now, nearly everyone is a blogger. Why should you subscribe to a magazine when you can read all the juicy stories online…for free?
Better yet, why wait for some blogger to publish a juicy story when you can just follow your favorite celebrity on their social media accounts and get first-hand information from their posts?
You get to learn what they do for fun, who they’re dating and where they hang out. Heck, you can even find out what they look like naked! Sorry, Kim Kardashian.

6. We Used to Watch TV as a Family
Back then, we used to gather around the TV and watch family shows or even the 9 o’clock news. There wasn’t much to do anyway, especially if it was during the school holidays and it was raining outside.
Today, however, we would rather watch YouTube videos on our laptops or smartphones than spend time with our families watching TV.
And even when we sit together as a family, we are always on our smartphones updating our status on Facebook* or reposting funny videos. In fact, it’s unusual to go into a home and find they have no Wi-Fi.

5. We Used to Write Letters
Ah, the days of snail mail. Those were the days when you’d have letters and packages delivered to your mail box or you’d have to go to the post office to pick up your letters. Everything came through the mail including bank statements. You had to buy stamps, envelopes and writing paper. Oh, and do you remember how you had to lick the stamps to get them to stick on the envelope?
But thanks to the Internet, snail mail is slowly dying, what with people sending emails and messages online

4. We Used to Look Up Stuff in an Encyclopedia or at The Library
If you wanted to write your term paper or complete a school assignment, you had to go to the library and read an actual book. The encyclopedia was the “Google” of the old days. And if you wanted to read a novel or something, you had to buy it from the bookstore or rent it from the library.
Since the Internet was invented, people rarely read books from the library. Why would they when they can install Kindle and access millions of books from their iPad any time of the day? And if they need to do any research, they can just Google it.

3. We Requested Songs On The Radio
Before YouTube and iTunes, we had to request songs on the radio and wait for them to come on. Sometimes the radio station had so many requests that your song ended up not being played.
But now, your favorite songs are just a click away. You can stream them online from your smartphone or laptop or just download them to your iPod and listen to them all day, any day. And depending on the copyright and piracy laws of where you are from, you can even download the songs for free.

2. We Bought “Adult Entertainment” at News Agents
This was like a rite of passage for teens back in the day. When you “come of age,” your friends would pressure you to go through with the ritual of purchasing a nudie mag from the news agent. If you didn’t have the guts to walk in there and buy a dirty magazine then you either weren’t “cool” enough or your friends would label you a coward until the day they would get tired of it.
But this trend is nearly non-existent. The Internet has made it possible for everyone to access adult video, with thousands of websites specializing in this type of content. And no one has to know that you have been watching this stuff because you can delete the history on your devices.

1. We Used to Spell Words Correctly
Before we could text using our mobile phones, we used to spell words correctly. We didn’t have anything like “L8R” or “Gnyt”.
While the invention of texting through mobile phones started this ridiculous trend of spelling words incorrectly, the Internet aided in spreading this habit worldwide. Does it really take that long to type “later” instead of “L8R”? And what’s with the annoying habit of typing “K” instead of “okay”?
Although the Internet might have ruined many things, it has done a lot of good for us as well. It’s made things faster, easier and more accessible. Before the Internet, no one would have thought in a million years that you could talk face to face with someone who is on another continent. But with Skype or apps like Viber and Facebook*, you actually can. So the Internet is not inherently bad. It’s the people who use it inappropriately that ruin it.
