Surveillance cameras seem to be on every street corner, outside every store, and inside every building. While dash cams and cell phone videos can sometimes pick up an incident, it’s surveillance cameras that can pick up the most damning evidence. Check out our list of some of the most disturbing things caught on a surveillance camera, and see how they still seem to trump all other video formats.
10. Bartender Beaten By Cop
In 2007, Karolina Obrycka was working as a bartender at Jesse’s Short Stop Inn in Chicago when she became engaged with an off-duty Chicago police officer. The entire altercation was caught on newly installed security cameras, and the video was released to the public. Anthony Abbate was twice the size of Obrycka and can be seen on the video throwing her to the ground and pummeling her with his fists and feet. Obrycka was awarded $850,000.
9. Thwarted Abduction Attempt Caught On Camera
Playing at their babysitter’s nearby park, 22-month-old Owen Wright was with his siblings when he was grabbed by a kidnapper. Surveillance cameras outside of a nearby grocery store caught the kidnapper running down the street holding the baby in his arms. Owen’s 8-year-old sister is seen yelling and chasing after them, and then a few moments later their 10-year-old brother is seen yelling and giving chase. The screaming attracted nearby witnesses to call 911, and the kidnapper put the child down in a vacant lot before escaping. The siblings were hailed as heroes, and the kidnapper was later identified as a 15-year-old that was wearing a fake mustache as a disguise.
8. Walmart Child Abduction Attempt
In 2012, 7-year-old Brittney Baxter, was at an Atlanta area Walmart with her mother when she was approached by Thomas A. Woods, who was on parole for voluntary manslaughter. Woods grabbed the second grader and tried to take her out of the store, which can all be seen on the surveillance video. Baxter began screaming and kicking, and Woods dropped her and fled. Woods was charged with attempted kidnapping, and Brittney Baxter was hailed as a resourceful little girl that was able to fight off her attacker. Her father, Randall Baxter gave an interview with Good Morning America saying, “I’m very proud of her. I just thank the Lord that she got away.”
7. Pets Stolen And Dragged For Meat
While we’ve all seen horrible images about animal abuse in puppy mill documentaries and those ASPCA commercials, that is incredibly tame compared to the documentary, Unreported World: Vietnam’s Dog Snatchers. The documentary details the multi-million dollar dog meat industry in Vietnam. Dogs are raised, farmed, and even stolen to keep up with the growing demand for dog meat. In the documentary, there is a surveillance camera outside of a person’s home that shows a small dog being stolen right from outside the front door. The dog is leashed and dragged behind a motorbike in a terrifying trip to the meat market. Dog theft is not a crime in Vietnam and the stiffest penalty would only be about $100, which has caused vigilante justice from citizens.
6. Jay Z And Solange Elevator Fight
At the 2014 Met Gala, there was a surveillance video that captured an elevator fight between Jay Z and Beyonce’s sister, Solange. At the Standard Hotel in New York, the after-party was filled with all of Hollywood’s A-list but what happened in the elevator was what everyone couldn’t stop talking about. Solange launched into a full-on attack with punches, slaps, and kicks that not even the bodyguards seemed to be able to contain. The public has speculated over what caused the fight; some saying Solange was protecting her sister against a philandering husband and others saying it was over something as trifling as tickets for her friends. Either way, TMZ gained rights to the video and leaked it for all to see, and it’s still something people reference in regards to the marital bliss status of Jay Z and Beyonce.
5. Ray Rice Elevator Incident
In 2014, Ray Rice was at the top of his game playing for the Baltimore Ravens when an altercation between him and his then-girlfriend, Janay Palmer, was recorded by a surveillance camera and released to the police. Once known as one of the best running backs in the NFL, he gained new fame for the punching and dragging his now-wife in an elevator and hallway. The Revel Casino in Atlantic City is where the incident took place, and ultimately resulted in criminal charges. However, it was the reaction by the Commissioner of the National Football League that made the biggest headlines. After only a two game suspension, public outrage led to alterations to the league’s domestic violence policy and the Ravens terminated Rice’s contract.
4. Nanny Cam Catches Mother Beat By Intruder
In 2013, a New Jersey mother was at home with her 3-year-old and 18-month-old at around 10:30 a.m. on a Friday when she was attacked by a home invader. The whole incident was caught on video through her nanny camera positioned in the living room. The mother is punched, dragged, kicked, and violently thrown down the stairs, all while her 3-year-old daughter sat petrified on the couch. The nanny cam was crucial in the case, because the family allowed its footage to be released to the public in hopes of catching the home invader. The attacker, Shawn Custis, was arrested and charged with attempted murder, burglary, and child endangerment.
3. Elderly Man Gets Hit By A Car And No One Helps
A surveillance camera at an intersection in Hartford, Connecticut shows an elderly man being hit by a car while crossing the street in 2008. Not only was he rammed at a high speed, but his body flew into the air and came crashing down into a crumpled pile in the middle of the road. The hit-and-run driver kept going, and none of the people on the street stopped to help the man. Cars continued to drive on the road, slowly swerving around the man’s body, without anyone stopping to help. Police were nearby on an unrelated issue, and that is when the man was finally taken to the hospital. Angel Torres, 78, was in critical condition and was later found to be paralyzed from the neck down. He died a year later, and they never found the hit-and-run driver.
2. Woman Falls Through Escalator Shaft
In 2015, a surveillance video went viral when it showed a mother throwing her son to safety as she fell through an escalator shaft to her death. As soon as the video was released, questions started to arise regarding many of the aspects in the video. There were two mall employees awaiting the mother’s arrival at the top of the escalator, seemingly knowing that there was a potential danger. Later it was discovered that the collapsed panel was loose prior to the incident, but they did not stop the escalator to repair the panel. The mall released a statement saying that it was “human error” that caused the tragedy, since workers should have adequately sealed the panel before allowing the escalator to be in use.
1. 9-Year-Old Beating Toddlers at Daycare
Families that put their children into daycare often worry about whether or not their kids are being properly supervised. A case in 2012 showed a surveillance video at the Mississippi daycare facility, Kiddie City Child Care Center. The video is difficult to watch, and not just because the victims were so young, but because of the conniving and manipulation of the 9-year-old attacker. Waiting for caregivers to turn their backs, the boy can be seen biting, kicking, pinching, and hitting toddlers. While the boy couldn’t be charged due to his age, the caregiver, Sandra Trevillion, was charged with contributing to the neglect of a minor and fired from the facility.
