Killzone: Shadow Fall Digital Version Weighs in at 50GB
30 sep 2013 12:37

The move to digital versions of games has been a long time coming, but the size of next-gen titles on the PlayStation 4 might be counter-intuitive for those looking to save of hard drive space. In a recent Q&A will Eurogamer, Sony UK boss Fergal Gara talked a bit about the move to digital downloads. The PlayStation 4 will offer the ability to play games as they download from the web, but as Gara explains, file size might make the feature underutilized. “[There] are big innovations in the PS4 to make it more attractive and more easy gamer wise to want to download,” Gara said. “The Play as you Download functionality, for example, means you don’t need the whole file before you go. This is a little bit counterbalanced by the fact the files themselves are getting bloody big. Killzone: Shadow Fall is an uber file – I think it’s cracking on for 50GB. It looks it, too, when you see it.” Considering the PS4 ships with a 500GB hard drive, which will have some space already squared away for operations, there won’t be a whole lot of space left over for games of that size. While it’s true you could always add an external drive for more space, it almost makes more sense to just buy the physical game. While we don’t yet know if every game on the PS4 will be this massive, it’s something those planning to go full digital will have to keep in mind when making purchasing decisions.

Slash Performs New Song on 'Conan'
30 sep 2013 12:47

When you’re one of the most famous guitarists on the planet and you’re making a move into filmmaking, it’s pretty much a given that you’re going to make an appearance on your first movie’s soundtrack, right? That seemed a fairly foregone conclusion when we heard that Slash was heading for Hollywood with his Slasher Films production company, and now that Slasher’s first movie, ‘Nothing Left to Fear,’ is on its way to theaters, we’re getting our first taste of the Slash-assisted soundtrack album. He appeared on the ‘Conan’ show last night with his musical buddy Myles Kennedy, and the duo performed a new song titled — you guessed it — ‘Nothing Left to Fear.’ Written and produced in collaboration with composer Nicholas O’Toole, the ‘Nothing Left to Fear’ soundtrack consists mainly of the movie’s score, with a pair of songs — the title track and an instrumental called ‘The Road to Stull’ — rounding out the 32-track CD. According to Slash, the process gave him an opportunity to explore a different side of his artistic personality. As he put it in a press release, “Film scoring prompts me to engage different styles of writing and guitar playing that don’t always present themselves when I make rock ‘n’ roll records.” The film itself is set to debut in limited release on Oct. 4, and promises “a harrowing tale in the spirit of the terrifying horror films of the 1970s” with a story “inspired by the legend of Stull, Kansas, which is surrounded by Internet folklore proclaiming the town to be one of the Seven Gateways to Hell.” Have a look at the footage above, and let us know if the song brings Midwestern demons to mind.

DC Comics And David Goyer Conjure A John Constantine TV Show
27 sep 2013 21:12

DC Comics has announced their third TV series this season (Gotham Central and The Flash being the other ones). Deadline reports NBC has picked up a Warner/DC adaptation of Constantine, based on the cynical British con-man and magician turned supernatural detective John Constantine, not to be confused with the Keanu Reeves portrayed by Keanu Reeves in 2005′s Constantine. The show will be written and produced by David Goyer (co-writer of Man Of Steel and Nolan’s Batman trilogy) and Daniel Cerone (producer of The Mentalist). As far as we know, the movie version of the character instrumental to Guillermo Del Toro’s Dark Universe is still in development. Constantine‘s contract stipulates there will be a penalty for NBC if they don’t air the show. John Constantine knows what a shaft those contracts with penalties are.

Jody Steel's Pop Culture Thigh Art
27 sep 2013 20:49

Artist, aspiring filmmaker, and current Emerson College student Jody Steel has been generating buzz online lately with the pop culture portraits she doodles during class. Her subjects include fictional characters like Breaking Bad's Walter White and Game of Thrones' Daenerys Targaryen, and artists like musician Thom Yorke and author Neil Gaiman. Also, she draws the portraits on her right thigh. Since she began uploading pictures of the drawings to the Internet earlier this month, she's received notoriety both online and offline -- and zero pushback from her professors. One of them was so impressed by the work that she gave Steel a job illustrating the book she was writing. Click through to see some of her most interesting pop culture portraits. You can also check out the full scope of Steel's work -- which includes more thigh drawings of everything from animals to open wounds, in addition to pieces drawn on more traditional canvases -- on her website and Facebook page.

Pearl Jam Unveil Performance-Based 'Sirens' Video
25 sep 2013 16:20

Pearl Jam are keeping it simple for the second video to emerge from their ‘Lightning Bolt’ album. The guys have just unveiled the new clip for ‘Sirens’ and it’s strictly a performance piece. But as with most Pearl Jam performances, there’s little ordinary about it. The veteran rockers hit their stride on this mid-tempo track, which showcases not only Eddie Vedder‘s vocal work, but also some impressive backing vocals from drummer Matt Cameron. Shot mostly in a dark room lit with the occasional white and red lighting, the video takes the viewer right into the crux of the performance with the band. In addition, to Vedder and Cameron, there’s also a spotlight for guitarist Mike McCready who busts out a second guitar midway into the clip to bring some electric licks to the track. Overall, ‘Sirens’ is a pretty straightforward video, but if anything this promo should show fans that the band has a solid new song to perform live once they hit the road this fall. You can count ‘Sirens’ among the standout new tracks that will make up ‘Lightning Bolt.’ The disc drops Oct. 15.

Motley Crue Debut Fiery Stage Show for Las Vegas 'Evening in Hell'
25 sep 2013 16:00

Motley Crue promised state-of-the-art pyrotechnics for their ‘An Intimate Evening in Hell’ residency at the the Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, and it looks like they weren’t just blowing smoke. According to preeminent rich & famous lifestyle chronicler Robin Leach, who previewed the band’s set for the Las Vegas Sun, attendees should “expect fire alarms and flashing-light warnings” for a fire-filled show that will reportedly find Tommy Lee drumming “inside a mystical symbol also set on fire” and Vince Neil singing ‘Home Sweet Home’ inside a “white-angel Liberace-esque cloak…that will be sprayed with fire retardant nightly.” Leach secured an endorsement from Vegas fixture Carrot Top, who enthused, “You can feel the heat! All of Las Vegas will know the show’s started — it’s that loud and fiery. It wasn’t just the Joint that shook from it; the entire hotel did.” “There is no show like this. There never has been, and there never will be,” Neil told Leach. “You’ve seen video fire from other rock acts on tour, but never the real thing. It’s more than any rock group has ever produced or attempted. It really is entering the depths of hell. There’s fire all around and fire coming down from above.” Neil went on to insist that fans could look forward to more than just special effects; in fact, he says the band’s set list puts him through his paces more doggedly than most. “I don’t get one break,” he explained. “We start with a song from when we began 30 years ago. We’ve reached back over the years to old hits to match up with new hits. It’s a difficult set list for me vocally — ‘Too Young to Fall in Love’ is no easy song to perform. We rehearsed the entire show in L.A., but we tested the entire set list with shows in Oklahoma and Miami. The reaction was incredible.” The band couldn’t do everything they wanted to do — Leach’s article mentions “plans for robots” that were dropped due to safety concerns, and questions whether fire marshals will allow them to attempt setting a stuntman on fire atop a blazing piano — but the end result still sounds suitably over the top. “We have the best fire tech experts in the world. This is so over the top, the only thing cool is what we do!” laughed Neil. “Basically, we’re setting everything on fire in a way that’s never been done before.” Based on the photo-filled Twitter feeds of Leach and Crue bassist Nikki Sixx, it looks like everybody had fun and avoided the emergency room. The first fan video from the show has now turned up, too — you can check that out below. ‘An Intimate Evening in Hell’ is scheduled to run from Sept. 18 through Oct. 6.

Prankster Blasts ‘Girly’ Music in Public
25 sep 2013 13:56

We’re not quite sure what makes this a prank, but the word’s in the title, so apparently that’s what this is. Really, it’s not much more than a guy playing music on his Kindle without the headphones plugged in all the way. Apparently this is a big deal in places other than NYC, where even if somebody’s headphones are plugged in all the way, the music is turned up so loud that your morning commute is basically guaranteed to be scored by Tyga. Perhaps the joke is that guys aren’t supposed to listen to Britney Spears or Miley Cyrus? That’s not a funny joke: that’s just a lame reiteration of old stereotypes that pretty much vanished the moment ‘Toxic’ came out and friends made us listen to it on repeat in college dorm rooms decorated with Sisters of Mercy posters. Apparently, it’s funny though — in one short day the video has already gotten over 35,000 views on YouTube. Maybe after nine months of living with a (male) roommate who blasts Spice Girls and Natalie Imbruglia on the regular, we don’t get the joke.

Replace Darth Vader's Voice With Young Anakin's And it = Comedy Gold
22 sep 2013 23:14

Imagine a galaxy far, far away, where Darth Vader‘s voice modulator malfunctions, and he’s left with the voice of his pre-pubescent self as played by “world’s greatest kid actor” Jake Lloyd. And now you know why ‘Phantom Menace’ had to be made. So that somebody could do this. Sure, not all the lines are great, but enough of them are that we think it’s worth the eight minutes. At the very least, jump to the 6:45 mark for some comedy gold.

The Truth Behind That Hilarious Car Accident Voicemail Video
22 sep 2013 22:53

An eight-year-old internet video is going viral once again. But is that funny voicemail video that made you laugh legit? People who have never lived west of the Mississippi seem to have a hard time believing this video could be for real. To everyone else, the man on the phone sounds suspiciously like their uncle who always brings a bottle of Crown Royal to Christmas dinner. Well, hold on to your hats, unbelievers (FACT: all unbelievers wear hats, that is one of their most distinguishing characteristics), because sources say…this video is LEGIT. The source of said verification? Fast food chain Jack in the Box themselves. Although they do not understand why this video rears its head every couple of years or so, they confirm that it is, in fact, real. As the story goes, the man delivering the play-by-play of one of the funniest auto accidents of all time was an operations manager at Jack in the Box who was running late to work. He called his boss right before the accident involving several feisty old ladies and one unfortunate man happened. The recording of the voicemail was passed around amongst Jack in the Box employees and eventually trickled out onto the internet. And the rest is viral video history. Over the years, various people have called into radio shows that aired the voicemail message claiming to have been involved in the incident. We would like to point out that it has only been confirmed that the video is a recording of an actual message, not that the events described in the voicemail actually happened. But we can dream. Dream of a place where old ladies wield Bibles and people still leave super long voicemails.

Watch Amy Poehler Impersonate Her Son Saying Spicy Salsa For Kimmel
18 sep 2013 13:14

Not so long ago I mentioned that Tina Fey should be the only person allowed to talk about her children. Well, my list has fittingly been expanded to two with the addition of best person ever, Amy Poehler. Last night real life Leslie Knope appeared in multiple segments on Jimmy Kimmel Live with the moment of moments coming in the above clip where she impersonates here uber bankable red haired son with a lisp getting tricked into saying “spicy salsa” over and over again. It’s funny because he doesn’t realize he’s being tricked into doing things for others’ amusement. That starts at the :55 mark. The rest of her appearance was almost as delightful, so let’s run through it… First there was Amy and Stephen Merchant pitching in on the monologue.

Ted Mosby Is A Big Ol' Slut
18 sep 2013 13:05

Ted Mosby: man whore. That’s according to the team at the Daily Beast, who put together a compilation of Schmosby’s many sexual exploits over the course of How I Met Your Mother, as told by the Mother to their kids. The video also insinuates that he’s a bad father, but we’ll get to that. As for the slut part: nope. Someone with a lot of time on their slap-betted-out hands deduced that over a 15-year span, Ted dated 31 women and had sex with 20 of them, including personal favorite Natalia. Those numbers might be a little high, based on false preconceived notions of “right” and “wrong” promiscuity, but they’re not at all unreasonable for a 30-something living in New York City. I’m sure the equally invidious Ross Gellar was nearly as successful in making women regret their life choices, to say nothing of the walking mistake that is Barney Stinson. But we’ll get to that.

Must-See Freaky Faces Made From Designer Clothes
18 sep 2013 12:33

When it comes to the majority of our clothes, we wear them, clean them, fold them and store them. And we repeat this cycle until they are too outdated too worn to wear – we seldom actually have fun with our clothes. The same, however, cannot be said for Austrian photographer Bela Borsodi. From her private New York studio, she’s unleashed a selection of freakish faces, formed and folded entirely from fashionable clothes. Titled ‘Fashion Faces’ she’s taken designer jeans, jackets, shirts and sweaters and contorted them into unusual & somewhat grumpy faces. Even more impressive that her origami-esque skills is the fact she did all this without a single drop of glue or pair of scissors being needed. Her only tools were a vivid imagination, buckets of clothes and lots of trial and error. The result? Your laundry never looked so…..lifelike!

The Ultimate 8 Step Guide To Eating Japanese Sushi
18 sep 2013 12:35

If you haven’t eaten sushi before, you really should give it try. Not only it is delicious, it’s incredible healthy for you, low in fat and high in essential oils and vitamins. For centuries the Japanese have been eating sushi (raw seafood) but those easy bite size sushi rolls that many of us partake in today, first stated in Edo, Japan somewhere around the middle of the 19th century. At the time, they were seen as the ultimate fast-food, you could carry around a healthy snack without the need for plates and cutlery. In America it was the trusty chicken nugget, in Japan it was the nigiri and maki rolls – and fortunately NOT kittens, as this hilarious ad might cause you to believe.

Aaron Paul Is Doing A Twitter Scavenger Hunt All Over Boise
16 sep 2013 12:05

Aaron Paul is in Boise today. There is almost certainly a legitimate, reasonable, easily uncovered explanation for this, but we are not going to get into it right now because all it will do is distract us from the more important issues at play. Namely, that Aaron Paul ran around downtown Boise today throwing tickets to a Breaking Bad screening out windows and getting people to yell “BITCH” at the top of their lungs, as though he somehow became a cross between Ferris Bueller and Willy Wonka. But I should back up. Yesterday, Aaron Paul tweeted this:

Congrats, Blobfish! You've Been Named the World's Ugliest Animal

Proving that your looks can get you far in an industry other than acting or modeling and that dogs aren’t the only creatures recognized for their outlandish features, the blobfish has won the non-distinct honor of being voted the world’s ugliest animal by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. Look at it — it looks like Mr. Magoo and Popeye fused their heads together before melting it under a heat lamp. In a public vote, the blobfish beat out a field that included animals whose hideous looks are exceeded only by their revolting names, including the kakapo, the axolotl, the Titicaca ‘scrotum’ water frog and the proboscis monkey. The blobfish, which subsists on crabs and lobsters, can be found off the southeastern coast of Australia and Tasmania. It tends to be found 2,000-4,000 feet below the water, so you don’t have to worry too much about getting surprised by one the next time you take your yacht out down that way. For winning, the blobfish will now become the mascot for the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, although by the looks of it a better prize probably would be a segment on any one of those scores of TV makeover shows.

Meanest Obituary Ever Will Make You Shudder
16 sep 2013 12:20

Usually, an obituary is a place to pay homage to the recently departed. But not always. A rather unflattering obit recently ran in the Reno Gazette-Journal that did not exactly paint the woman at the center of it in the best light: "Marianne Theresa Johnson-Reddick born Jan 4, 1935 and died alone on Aug. 30, 2013. She is survived by her 6 of 8 children whom she spent her lifetime torturing in every way possible. While she neglected and abused her small children, she refused to allow anyone else to care or show compassion towards them. When they became adults she stalked and tortured anyone they dared to love. Everyone she met, adult or child was tortured by her cruelty and exposure to violence, criminal activity, vulgarity, and hatred of the gentle or kind human spirit.” The obit was so vicious it was removed from the paper’s website, although you can still find it and read on in shock. Do you think the paper was right to remove the obit? Or should they honor the wishes of the departed’s children, even if their tribute to their late mother is a bit harsh?

Ben Affleck Will Direct A Pilot For Fox
16 sep 2013 11:56

Here’s two quick somewhat kind-of, sort-of related comic-book/TV related trade news stories: First up, Ben Affleck — who was recently cast as a Batman described as “tired and weary” in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel — will also be directing his first televison pilot (quick aside: How awesome would it have been if Affleck were Batman, and Jon Hamm were Superman, as had been rumored before Henry Cavill took the role?) The pilot is for a Fox drama (boo! Why not cable, Ben?) It’s called The Middle Man, and it’s a crime drama set in 1960′s Boston, so it’s right up Affleck’s alley. According to the press release: “The Middle Man focuses on the relationship between the FBI agent responsible for taking down the Italian-American mafia and his confidential informant, an Irish-American gangster. Throughout the relationship, ‘the duo’s actions inadvertently give rise to the Irish-American mob in this timeless Boston crime saga.’” So, it’s the precursor to the Whitey Bulger/Stephen Flemmi gang? The Middle Man will be vying for a slot on the Fall 2014 schedule over on Fox. Meanwhile, in news more directly related to comic books, the CW has cast the lead for its planned Flash series. The character will be introduced in The CW’s Arrow during the second season, and if the CW likes it (they will), the network will roll out a Flash series. Who will play the Barry Allen, aka, The Flash? A kid named Grant Gustin, who some may know from Glee. What can we expect?

'Sleepy Hollow' Brings Head-Chopping To Fox
16 sep 2013 11:59

Sleepy Hollow has a pretty basic conceit; Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman wake up in 2013 and rumble. But as goofy as the idea is, the show might actually be pretty good, or at least willing to embrace its fundamental silliness enough to be a lot of fun. Here’s a pretty lengthy trailer Fox has thrown together to explain the show a little bit. And, honestly, it’s a lot more engagingly goofy than you might anticipate, being as it’s a drama on Fox from the guys who wrote the Star Trek reboot. Also, the Headless Horseman packing a glowing axe and an automatic weapon is kind of a selling point:

Dave Chappelle Told An Amazing Story About Kanye West
15 sep 2013 13:47

Two things that I love unconditionally: 1) Stories about eccentric musicians, as told and/or reenacted by Dave Chappelle; and 2) Stories about Kanye West, as told or reenacted by anyone. In the first category, we have the famous Rick James and Prince sketches from Chappelle’s Show. In the second, we have lots, most notably Aziz Ansari’s story about the time he hung out at Kanye’s house and walked in to find him silently bumping along on the couch to his own album. (Posted below.) But today is a great day because now those two things have been welded together by the gods and presented to us as a gift. At a recent stop in Illinois on the much-discussed Oddball Comedy and Curiosity Festival, Chappelle told this story about the time Kanye performed on Chappelle’s Show just as he was starting to blow up, and it is just perfect. Enjoy.

Two things that I love unconditionally: 1) Stories about eccentric musicians, as told and/or reenacted by Dave Chappelle; and 2) Stories about Kanye West, as told or reenacted by anyone.

Clever Illustrations by Nabhan
12 sep 2013 12:12

Deviant Art user Nabhan has created a series of illustrations in which many of these objects double up as puns. For instance, one of the illustrations shows a man who has taken away the “control” button on the keyboard, alluding to the more figurative idea of “taking contol” of one’s life. While some drawings are silly, others are quite creative and will brighten up your day. View the rest of these illustrations below.

Funny Posters Reveal the Real Life of a Photographer
12 sep 2013 12:16

To many, being a photographer is a glorified profession. How hard could it be? You get to travel the world, shoot babies or weddings, and you might even be your own boss! Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, right? Over the past year, The Shoppe Design studio has started to dispel those myths, revealing the true life of a photographer. Dripping with sarcasm, the posters, under the series name Shoppe Satire, are mostly all lines photographers hear from their clients or ones they say to them (often with a sarcastic undertone). They're lines that make photographers sigh in disbelief like, "Your camera takes really nice pictures," or "Of course you are invited to our wedding. You're bringing your camera, right?" Whether you're just entering the profession or are a seasoned photographer, we'll guarantee you'll get a kick out of these posters!

Miniature Adventures in a Southwestern Landscape
12 sep 2013 11:57

At quick glance, one might believe that these landscapes are far-off shots of travelers enjoying outdoor expeditions. However, upon closer inspection, the truth reveals itself in the form of miniature figures perfectly placed within the majestic landscapes of the southwestern United States. The series, entitled Southwest, is a photo project by husband and wife team Kurt and Edwige Moses. Known for their wide variety of adventures in a miniature world, the artist duo focuses on blending the one-inch tall figures into real life situations. Although the moments are fairly ordinary—enjoying a bike ride, taking a photograph, or going for a hike—the toy people add a bit of playfulness to the naturally illuminated, everyday scenes. The artists explain that their collective project, Un Petit Monde, "combines the challenges of capturing an evocative, aesthetically pleasing image while documenting a scene in the real world environment using only available light and existing conditions. Ultimately, it is our mission to share some of the fun and joy for life with you through our project."

Give A Child A Nightmare
12 sep 2013 12:02

Kids are way too sheltered these days. With 24 hours of children’s television available, they aren’t forced to watch Unsolved Mysteries and America’s Most Wanted like I was. Stir things up a bit. Get a Zombie Pet Plush. The huggable undead might bring them some sweet–yet still a little scary–cuddles by day, but turn the lights out and wait for the screams! Look at these things…they’re pretty gross looking. Choose from Bitey – a possibly rabid baby werewolf, Deadington Ruxworth – a stuffed bear, or Frostbite – an undead penguin.

Incredible Hyperrealistic Drawings of Everyday Objects
12 sep 2013 11:58

Milan-based Italian illustrator and graphic designer Marcello Barenghi creates hyperrealistic drawings of ordinary objects that boggle the mind. It's hard to believe that the artist uses a standard set of art supplies to reproduce the likeness of everyday items, including anything from a bag of chips or bottle of whiskey to a crumpled up banknote. Each mixed media illustration in the artist's growing collection of works goes beyond just seeming realistic. They give the illusion of three-dimensionality, leaving one to question what they're actually looking at. Every wrinkle and glossy reflection is illusively reproduced, taking approximately 4 to 6 hours to complete. Barenghi also records his meticulous process, compressing the hours of work into 3-4 minute videos. Check out a time lapse view of the artist drawing a disheveled stack of playing cards, below.

Man Dresses Up As Disney Princes & Princesses
12 sep 2013 11:51

Richard Schaefer is a costume design student at Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. Here he is dressed up as different Disney princes and their respective princess in a series called Prince to Princess Transformation. If I may say so, he makes a handsome dude AND a pretty lady. If I may not say so, then who the hell makes the rules around here? Whatever, I’ll just keep it to myself. But I’ll be thinking it in my head! I’ll be thinking it in my head so hard. So hard in fact, that I probably won’t be able to help but blurt it out loud. What? You can’t fault me for speaking my mind! I want pizza. What’s that smell? Ooh, Fraiser marathon at 6! God, that man looks good as a man and as a lady. How does he do it? See? I can’t help it!

Amazing Typography Portraits Created with Song Lyrics
12 sep 2013 11:46

Anyone interested in typography will be in complete awe of these realistic portraits by artist Sean Williams. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, the designer, photographer, and art director certainly has a great eye for conceptual designs. To create the series, entitled Hip Hop Type, Williams took the lyrics from popular songs by each subject, including Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, and Kanye West. Relying on both positive and negative space, the artist then warped, curved, and resized the letters to fit perfectly together, forming instantly recognizable faces. The absolutely mind-blowing illustrations are an impressive combination of typography and illustration. Featuring just one simple color, the handful of well-organized words can be regarded in two ways. First, from up close, viewers can read the lyrics and visualize the artist at work on stage. Then, from a bit farther away, the color blends together to form the distinct facial details of each pop star.

Adorable Illustrations of Superhero Families
12 sep 2013 11:41

Paris, France-based designer Andry "Shango" Rajoelina has created an incredibly adorable set of illustrations called Super Families that show superheroes and their families on their way to school. The first part of his series, Justice Families, debuted back in May and in July he released part two, Marvel Families. Each of the illustrations shows superheroes we all know and love as either young children or as grown-up parents with children of their own. With their backs turned, we don't see their faces. Each character is easily identified, however, with their unmistakable outfits.
