“BE passionate joyful euphoric intense angry present ALIVE” – that’s the advice from world renowned photographer Jordan Matter. His project Dancers Among Us carries that spirit with it, transforming everyday situations into dynamic, and often nearly unbelievable scenes that capture the human body ALIVE. From the graceful, to the comical, to the intense, Matter has photographed dancers of all sorts in locations around the world – but especially in his home New York. Each image is an encouraging treasure, one that calls us to enjoy the beauty of life in each moment.
Earlier this year Matter told a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), “I’m the whitest man alive, and my dancing reflects that, but I still love doing it.” And that’s the point here. His whole series was inspired by his then three-year old son, Hudson, playing with a toy bus and so involved in the moment that his father’s imagination simply couldn’t keep up:
“What happens to this enthusiasm, this ability to be wholly present in the moment? Why are these pure moments of passion so often replaced with cynicism, boredom, and indifference? As I played with my son, I thought about creating photographs that would show the world as if through his eyes. The people in the images would be alive and in the moment, celebrating all aspects and emotions of everyday life.”
Soon after playing “bus” with his son, Matter attended a dance performance and he knew he’d found the people to represent that celebration of the moment. What has resulted is this series of inspiring photographs and an absolutely fantastic book.
