Now here’s an ingenious project we can all relate to. Romana Lefevre has paired up with photographer Daniel Castro, to create a book called ‘Rude Hand Gestures of the World‘ – which we dare say, is probably a must have for any bold traveller out there. You can buy your copy here (it’s fantastic) but in the meantime, here’s a little bit of a preview of what to expect. We’ve included some of our own interpretations as well, because lets face it, if you’re going to be brazen enough to use one of these gestures – you’ll want to know what the potential result is going to be.
Chin Flick = Get lost.
The more you know!
What Does It Mean?
Basically, ‘get lost’ or ‘leave now & don’t return’. Whilst consider rude, it’s not overly offensive, it’s more of a casual insult used towards the end of an argument.
Who Uses It?
Expect to see this used during the odd heated exchange in places such as France, Belgium, Tunisia and of course Northern Italy
What Will Happen If I Do?
Make sure it’s the last time you’re seeing that individual, because if you bump into them again – you won’t be getting any favors.
Idiota
It’s all in the name! By doing this gesture you’re asking the question “are you a complete idiot” its reference to a retarded individual putting an ice-cream cone into their forehead rather than their mouth.
WHO USES IT?
Commonplace in Brazil and occasionally used in the UK.
What Will Happen If I Do?
It depends on the context obviously, you might get a laugh if used correctly. But generally speaking, you’re going to end up insulting someone somewhere.
Moutza
A minimal way of saying “go to hell!” in more extreme interpretations it could mean “I’m going to violate your mother / sister”
Who Uses It?
If you’re travelling around Pakistan, Africa or Greece you’ll certainly come across it.
What Will Happen If I Do?
You will most certainly end up inflaming the situation or worse case scenario, you’ll kick off a fight.
Five Fathers
If you weren’t familiar with sign language, you will still be able to understand the sentiment here – 1 into 5. It’s not simple mathematics, but a reference to having 5 fathers to your 1 mother – imply she’s a whore and that you’re a bastard child in effect. It’s actually the most offensive gesture you can use in the Arabic world.
Who Uses It?
Commonplace in Arabic countries.
What Will Happen If I Do?
If you’re bold enough to use it, you will without a doubt start a brawl or mini riot – so be prepared….
The Peppermill
That you have a screw loose or that you’re stir crazy.
Who Uses It?
It’s popular in Southern Italy.
What Will Happen If I Do?
You can expect a bit of banter back, but this one is one of the better ones in that it is mostly harmless.
Corna Doesn't = rock on
Certainly it’s easy to confuse this gesture with the ‘devil horns’ you see at every rock concert (that’s the American), but its main interpretation is that your wife is cheating on you.
Who Uses It?
One of the more common gestures, you’ll see it used in Portugal, Italy, Spain, Brazil & Colombia where it has the same meaning. Use it in Lebanon, Syria or even Saudi Arabia and you’ll be mimicking a stag.
What Will Happen If I Do?
It’s certainly lot easier to flash this sign, than having a difficult conversation with your mate about his unfaithful wife. Result? He’ll be heartbroken but hey, you’re doing him a favour right?
Write off
I’m doing my best to ignore you right now.
Who Uses It?
Greeks who like to sulk a lot.
What Will Happen If I Do?
You can expect silence in return, that or a verbal protest as the person lampoons you for being unreasonable and surly.
Cutis
F**k you and your entire family.
Who Uses It?
People who are seriously angry obviously. Common in India and Pakistan.
What Will Happen If I Do?
You’ll be escorted out the building pretty swiftly…
Tacaño
You’re stingy or overly tight with money.
Who Uses It?
Prominent around various restaurant tables across Mexico and South America, when an individual tries to contest the bill or avoid paying their fair share.
What Will Happen If I Do?
You’ll be giving the person opposite you a pretty big guilt trip – which is probably deserved.
Fish Smell
I’m watching you because I find you shifty or deceitful.
Who Uses It?
Originating in Southern Italy, it’s now used in most countries in Europe thanks to its many references in film.
What Will Happen If I Do?
You’ll be putting that person on notice and making sure they are mindful of their future behaviour.
