Print media is very slowly going the way of the dinosaur, what with the internet enabling online publications to sit on the journalism throne. Still, gaming journalism had to have its start somewhere and that start was in the humble gaming magazine. You know, those things we actually paid monthly subscriptions for in order to read reviews of games that had actually been out for a few weeks. So let’s take a stroll down memory lane and look at 10 Great Gaming Magazines from both the past and the present.

Gamepro was the real gamer’s magazine back in the day. Much like the consoles had their console wars, the magazines had their magazine wars. If you had any console other than a Nintendo console, you subscribed to Gamepro.
However, if you were a tried and true Nintendo fan, then Nintendo Power was your magazine of choice. They had great strategy columns, fan contests, and features, but above all they had a personality that was distinctly their own. You will be missed Nintendo Power.
Electronic Gaming Monthly is the longest running gaming publication, having been founded in 1989 and surviving to this day. Unless it dies in the near future it won’t be giving up that title anytime soon.
GameInformer is another gaming publication that has managed to stay alive by going digital. It is currently a very trusted news source in gaming though now it is more well known in the online sphere than it is for its print magazine.
Most video-game magazines focus on console gaming first and foremost. PC Gamer, on the other hand, focuses primarily on the PC gaming angle and continues to do so to this day.
Computer and Video Games is notable for being the first videogame magazine ever published. The publication got its start in 1981, before many gamers of today were even born!
Famitsu is the place to go for Japanese gaming knowledge of all kinds. To this day, we still get huge new leaks about JRPGs, fighting games, and other Japanese gaming projects from this publication. It’s also one of the oldest gaming magazines out there, still in print today.
When the console wars became more complicated than Nintendo vs Sega, the “Official” line of magazines were created. There was an Official Dreamcast Magazine, Official PlayStation Magazine, Official Xbox Magazine, and more. Today, these magazine are largely replaced by blogs run by first party companies.
Edge Magazine is the place to go for gaming knowledge in the UK. It has since gone online, yet the print publication still survives today.
The Dengeki Series of mazines in Japan cover everything from PC gaming to video gaming to arcade gaming. They have publications for specific consoles or for gaming in general and they continue to be a great source for overseas leaks.
