The 2013 Dakar Rally off-road race started in Lima, Peru on January 5th. More than four hundred racers in four classes of vehicles will race 5,200 miles to Santiago, Chile. This is the fifth year that the event has taken place in South America after security threats forced the cancellation of the original race that had run from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal since 1978.
