Vintage Style Astronomy Maps Made from Open Source Data of the Universe

Biology graduate student Eleanor Lutz uses her spare time working on Tabletop Whale. This science illustration blog is an outlet for her creativity, allowing her to publish drawings, infographics, and data visualizations relating to science. Her latest project, Atlas of Space, is an exciting set of astronomy maps. Using open source datasets, she’s designed incredibly artistic visualizations that have a vintage feel to them.

Map Reveals How Long It Takes To Learn Different Languages

Interested in learning a foreign language, but need one that’s easy and time-efficient to pick up? The Foreign Service Institute has done the handy task of sorting major languages around the world into 5 categories of difficulty according to their differences from English, and Reddit user Fummy has translated that data into a color-coded map to make it all simpler.

This Man Spent 6 Years Crocheting A Super Mario Bros Map Blanket

Super Mario 3 fan Kjetil Nordin spent 800 hours over 6 years to make a perfect crocheted copy of the game’s first map. The 31 year-old Norwegian used 100 balls of yarn, and the impressive blanket measures 2.2 by 1.8 meters (7’2”x5’10”). Kjetil even redid a massive section when he realized he had used an imperfect color for a certain portion of the map. During those six years, he won the Norwegian Sky Diving team championship two times, earned two university degrees, started a career, and even made smaller crochet figures for his family. It “hasn’t taken all of my time. You get a bit sick of such long lasting projects.”

Once upon a time, maps were practical. Ten years back, you probably used them on a road trip to figure out your best route. Hundreds of years ago, cartographers explored the world to make maps for our knowledge and future convenience. Today, though, we have Google and GPS systems, rendering paper maps effectively useless. If you have a few paper maps sitting around, don't let their vintage elegance go to waste. Turn them into gorgeous art and home decor with the 17 inspirational ideas below. Happy crafting!

Maps with hidden stories

Alexandria Heather likes to expand the negative space of images. She likes to find shapes where there are none really present, outside of squinting your eyes, or closing one eye and turning your head to one side. She is quite sure it is what we’ve been doing forever. It is why there are constellations in the sky.

Guy Spends 5 Hours Drawing Detailed Map Of Middle-Earth

Even when drawn on the side of a Starbucks coffee cup, Tolkien’s big and beautiful world of Middle-Earth (the setting for the Lord Of The Rings) is an impressive place. Liam Kenny, an artist in Liverpool, spent 5 hours recreating this epic map on the side of a cup that he later handed over to a barista who posted pictures online.

The map of Internet world

At first glance, it looks like a vintage map of the world.
However, this amazing image actually shows the online world - with the most popular websites replacing the traditional countries.
Created by Slovakian artist Martin Vargic, it is based on the iconic National Geographic maps of the world - but with a modern twist
