The Meteora is an incredible formation of sandstone pillars in Greece that are home to several monasteries. A big part of what makes these monasteries so special is that they were carved out of the pillars themselves. It's almost as if building monasteries on top of a 370 metres high rock formation wasn't difficult enough, so the monks decided to give themselves even more of a challenge. If that was the goal, mission accomplished. In all seriousness though, these monasteries are absolutely beautiful. It's no wonder they've been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
