Repurposed paintings

David Irvine has a knack for uncovering the possibility in items and making them new and exciting once again. He recently released a series called "Re-Directed Art." He took old, boring thrift store artwork and made it into fun, interesting paintings. He "re-directs" the paintings in the sense that with his additions, he changes the focus, theme, or narrative. He uses something already imagined as his canvas to create something new. Check out his paintings below.

Famous Paintings Recreated with Layers of Masking Tape

Japanese artist and senior at Musashino Art University Nasa Funahara builds beautiful painterly compositions completely out of masking tape. She has an extensive collection of the material that she collects and eventually transforms into impressively detailed works of art. “I own about 450 rolls,” she said.

Living Paintings by Alexa Meade

The artworks that Alexa Meade makes are very unique and original. A usual painter creates a 2D or a 3D drawing on flat 2D surface. Alexa, on the other hand, draws over the body of a regular person, making them look like a 2D painting. The pictures of these people are almost uncanny, as you realize that the eyes “paintings” are real, and suddenly it dawns upon you that you are seeing a living and breathing human being. It is weird how we perceive this world, and how easy it is to trick our brain into thinking that it’s seeing a two-dimensional object.

These Paintings Are so Realistic, You’ll Think They’re Photographs

Kyle Barnes is an artist in Northern Ireland doing some truly amazing things with his artwork. If you didn't see Kyle working on one of his pieces with his brush and smell the scent of oil paint in the air, you'd think his pieces were photographs.

Four "Hidden" Paintings Are Revealed From Different Angles

Emulsifier is a hand painted sculpture made of 160 glass strips by Austrian artist Thomas Medicus that looks like one of four different images, depending on what angle you view it from. While the anamorphic installation looks like a floating fish from one perspective, it can also look like a flying bird from another. Each image is reveal as the cube-like structure rotates, allowing the painted glass strips to align precisely on each side.

5-Year-Old Girl With Autism Expresses Herself Through Paintings

Even though 5-year-old Iris Grace was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 and has had speech problems her whole life, she has found a beautiful way of expressing herself through visually stunning paintings. The little girl's mother, Arabella Carter-Johnson, explains: "We have been encouraging Iris to paint to help with speech therapy, joint attention and turn taking. Then we realised that she is actually really talented and has an incredible concentration span of around 2 hours each time she paints… Her autism has created a style of painting which I have never seen in a child of her age, she has an understanding of colours and how they interact with each other."

Interactive 3-D Paintings Invite You to be Part of the Artwork

What if, just for a moment, you could be a Ghostbuster? Or, you “open” the door to the delightful creatures of Monsters, Inc.? This is the idea behind the fun, mobile exhibition by Russian art and design studio Brain Mash. They crafted a series of three-dimensional paintings that seem to pop from the walls. Viewers are invited to interact with the colorful, realistically-rendered works, and they can play along with the visual cues in each piece.
Nearly everyone can find joy in this lighthearted show; the paintings provide great photo opportunities that capture you in fantastical situations with larger-than-life subjects. So, if you’ve ever wanted to be a superhero for a little while, you have the chance.

Heartbreaking Paintings of Deceased Shelter Dogs

Just like photographer Traer Scott and her heartbreaking portraits of shelter dogs, artist Mark Barone is trying to bring some much needed attention to the neglected animals in shelters. After learning that 5,500 shelter dogs are killed every day in the United States, he decided to paint 5,500 portraits of actual shelter dogs with names and the date that they were killed. Now two years into the project, Barone has painted more than 3,500 portraits which, for any dog lover, are incredibly hard to look at.
