It's no secret that saw blades can be used to make all kinds of beautiful things, from furniture to houses. Yet most people probably don't think that they can be turned into art themselves. Artist Daniel Thomson of MyndScapes saw something in saw blades other than their utilitarian nature. He turns the once plain tools into canvases for his artwork.
You might also notice that Thomson's work almost exclusively features a theme of nature and the outdoors. Nature, Thomson says, is his greatest source of inspiration, although he doesn't replicate exact scenes. "All of my paintings are imagined, and I get the most satisfaction out of them knowing there is no place like it that exists outside of my mind. That is where I came up with the name MyndScapes."
"I started using saw blades about 20 years ago when I stumbled across an old lumbermill saw blade in a barn nearby where I lived in Buffalo, NY. I thought it would be unique to have on a wall, and I have been painting on them and other unique surfaces ever since. I am always looking for unique mediums to paint on; other than painting on sawblades, I currently paint on surfboards, ceiling tiles, window frames, etc. Also, I enjoy painting large murals on walls."
