This DIY Vinyl Engraver Lets You Create and Play Your Own Records at Home

Made in collaboration with Japanese publisher Gakken, the simple, DIY record cutting machine is designed for both seasoned record collectors and those who simply want to explore a new interest in vinyl. Users simply play audio from their phone or another device through the provided auxiliary cable or USB. The integrated cutting arm then picks up the sound vibrations and engraves the blank plastic disc. Once the record is cut, users can then listen to the recording instantly by swapping the cutting arm for the tone arm. The Easy Record Maker, which can accommodate traditional 7-inch EPs, also features a built-in speaker.

During his teenage years, Suzuki was part of a ska-punk band, but became frustrated as he didn’t have the financial resources to use professional recording equipment. He designed the Easy Record Maker for everyone to use at home, in a bid to encourage music lovers to simply have fun—without breaking the bank. “With the Easy Record Maker, I’ve tried to create a product which people can really immerse themselves in,” says Suzuki. “Sound has a strong impact on our emotions and the way we behave, and I always try to create an experience with sound that as many people as possible can relate to.” The Easy Record Maker comes with ten blank 5-inch discs and is currently available to buy from Gakken in Japan for 8,778 yen (around $81).
