The megamouth shark is a rare shark. It was discovered only in 1976. This shark is extremely rare and less than 50 sightings have so far been recorded. In fact, the scientific world was shocked because this creature is relatively large and has an average length of around 5 meters. The largest specimen recorded is a female which was captured. This one had a length of 6 meters and weighed 1040kgs. The average weight is around 500-750kgs. It is oviparous.
It has a relatively large mouth which can be as wide as 1.3 meters. It is a filter feeder and the filtration is done with a large number of tiny teeth. It feeds mainly on shrimps and plankton. During day, it is found at great depths, but at night, it comes up to feed near the surface. It has been sighted in the Atlantic and pacific Oceans. It is a poor swimmer and moves at a speed of 1.5-2kms/hr.
