Catwoman – The femme fatale feline of the superhero world! Underhand, sneaky, seductive, sexy and more than a little catty (see what I did there) as a villan she’s been loved for generations. We look back at the stars that have played the character, their stories and their success.
Who is your favorite?
Julie Newmar: When Julie Newmar took the first role and turned the Catwoman persona, into a naughty cocktail party minx with a dash of 1960′s sex appeal as part of the Batman TV series.
Lee Merriwether: (who suspiciously looks like Julie Newmar) then played the major role of Catwoman in the 1966 Batman movie. A little more mature, a little more classy and a little more refined some would say.
Eartha Kitt: stepped in the role in 1968 for the final TV season, with Julie Newmar unavailable to play the role. Interestingly enough, Eartha Kitt’s outspoken views on the Vietnam War caused her career to nosedive. When Kitt was invited to the White House luncheon and was asked by Lady Bird Johnson about the Vietnam War. She replied: “You send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot.” Apparently her remarks reportedly caused Mrs. Johnson to burst into tears. The public reaction to Kitt’s statements was extreme, both pro and con. Publicly ostracized in the US, she devoted her energies to performances in Europe and Asia. No more Kitty Cat Catwoman for Kitt.
Michelle Pfeiffer: Fast forward several years & next in line (and arguable the most famous and icon incarnation of the Catwoman persona) was Michelle Pfeifferin 1989′s Batman Returns. Her smouldering performance, highlighted the very best of the character – devious, playful and yet fiendishly irresistible. To this day, it is arguably her most famous role and certainly one of the best portrayal of the villain.
Halle Berry, whom unfortunately delivered a sub-par performance. She's my favorite actress, and I think she is awesome. So, whatever, haters.
Anne Hathaway. Admittedly, lived up to Michelle Pfiffer standards. She was a phenomenal Catwoman and completely delivered.
