LeBron James Rapped! AND It wasn't terrible.
11 jul 2013 16:40

Further establishing himself among the ranks of other NBA players, both great and meaningless, who have turned to rapping as a second or third career, LeBron James posted two short clips of his new rap effort to Instagram video yesterday. And, like any amateur rapper before him, he just borrowed someone else’s beats and laid his own lyrics over it, before Tweeting it out to all of his fans and yes men. I get it, though. He’s the best basketball player in the world, one of the best to ever play the game, and he’s in position to win a third-straight NBA title and yet another MVP award next season, so he can do whatever the hell he wants. But if I could play superstar whisperer for a moment, I’d like to recommend that he try doing whatever he wants that so many people before him haven’t already done and sucked at so spectacularly. Looking at you, Kobe Bryant. This is just another disappointing cliché from the guy who should be anything but. Next up: Space Jam 2: Better Than Michael Jordan In Space Jam.

Charlie Hunnam's Real Life Accent Is Officially A Trainwreck
11 jul 2013 16:38

As someone who watched every single episode of Judd Apatow’s short-lived Undeclared in real time I am consistently fascinated by the acting career of Charlie Hunnam. First it was recognizing him in films like Cold Mountain and Children of Men. Then after multiple first season Sons of Anarchy promos I finally put together it was the same guy portraying what soon would become UPROXX’s favorite love-to-hate bro-walking, nostril-flaring Hamlet of the MC: Jax Teller. And NOW it’s Hunnam’s impending jump to summer blockbuster sci-fi/action star in Pacific Rim that has me fascinated (don’t get me started on the Ron Perlman-FX-Charlie Day connection). Not a bad career arc for the pretty-faced British kid who was billed under Jay Baruchel on a show that everyone forgets about thanks to Freaks and Geeks. But none of this will ever fascinate me as much as the dude’s real life accent. From the few interviews I’ve seen it’s been all over the place for years, but last night on Conan it reached peak convolutedness. Like many British actors before him (see: Bale, Christian) years of living in the States and constantly using American accents in his work has turned his speech pattern into this weird indecipherable amalgam of all influences. In the clip below where he describes going head-to-head with multiple home burglars (lol, wut?) he goes in and out of Jax Teller, Nicholas Nickelby, and west coast dock worker effortlessly. It’s so odd and mesmerizing it’s enough to make you not notice how peculiar an interview it is for a guy promoting his summer blockbuster.

Movie Trailer: Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale
12 jul 2013 00:00

From Crazy Heart writer/director Scott Cooper comes Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale as a down-on-his luck steel mill worker, a real Springsteen-song type, who gets drawn into vigilantism after Woody Harrelson and some bad boys try to get Bale’s Iraq veteran brother played by Casey Affleck to take a dive in his underground boxing match. Much to their chagrin, Casey Affleck says PTSDEEEEZ NUTS to that idea and they retaliate by killing him, leading to an epic showdown between Bale and the bad boys. Also, Pearl Jam.

The film is financed by Disney, so naturally Walt is portrayed as a kindly-old Tom Hanks type, and not as, say, a ruthless, Nazi-sympathizing businessman. Ms. Voice Made Either The Best Or Worst Music Video Ever
11 jul 2013 16:31

I’ve given this some thought, and I’ve come to the conclusion that this video — by an R&B(?) artist who calls herself “Ms. Voice” — might just be The Room of music videos. It’s so bad that it can’t be intentionally bad. It appears to me to be the work of people who seriously tried to make a great music video, just like Tommy Wiseau seriously tried to make a great movie with The Room (and still believes that he did!) Maybe Ms. Voice is the Tommy Wiseau of music? And maybe Tommy Wiseau directed her video?!?!?!

'DuckTales Remastered' Has A Release Date And Featurette
11 jul 2013 16:29

For some time now, the game all us kids of the 90s are impatiently waiting for, DuckTales Remastered, has been stuck with a vague “summer” release date. Well, now we have a more specific date to mark on the calendar — DuckTales Remastered hits the PC, PS3 and Wii U on August 13th! Sorry Xbox owners, for some reason you’re going to have to wait until September 11th (I have a feeling that date may end up changing!) In honor of the game getting a release date, here’s a fairly interesting DuckTales behind the scenes “duckumentary”. Ha ha, oh, duck puns…

10 Reasons Why Justin Bieber Is History's Douchiest Monster
11 jul 2013 16:28

It's tough keeping up with Justin Bieber. He's just so...douchey, to the point where he makes The Douche, of Crazy Ira and The Douche fame, seem like Casey Kasem by comparison. I've never been within a mile of the Beebs (the court took care of that problem), but I imagine being around him is like wandering into an Axe Body Spray walk-in humidor. How Selena, who seems like a normal-ish person, lasted as long as she did, I'll never know. After yesterday's incident, which I'll get to later, I thought it wise to cull together some of the Swaggy Bro's douchiest moments from throughout his still relatively-young career. What does the future hold in store? Will he rob a Hollister store, shirtless, while listening to DMB? The answer: yes. Justin Bieber: history's douchiest monster.

Arrested Development Season 4 Señoritis In-Depth Recap
11 jul 2013 16:23

While I can’t fully condone the seldom usage of Maeby and George Michael (and Buster) in the first two-thirds of the season it sure does make for a helluva payoff down the stretch as the episodes never seem to hit a lull, tie all sorts of loose ends together, and allow Alia Shawkat and Michael Cera to shine. Maeby Fünke’s “Señoritis” is a whirlwind of awesome, and chocked full of buried items and GIF-able moments that make this probably the longest and most in-depth “Beyond the Binge” installment of all. Let’s jump right in… The actor who plays Perfecto (Eli Vargas) also played “Mexican Teenager” in the S2 episode “¡Amigos!”. I see no way they aren’t the same person in the AD universe.

Forbes Ranks The Highest Paid Stand-Up Comedians
11 jul 2013 16:20

I don’t remember exactly where I heard it, but I remember Louis C.K. talking about his FX show, Louie, and saying that it’s not a show he does for the money. In fact, most of his income derived from taking his stand-up act around the country. After seeing how much he make, I believe him. I think he probably made more last year than two or even three times the entire budget of his television show. It is apparently a very lucrative career at the top, although I have to admit that I have never heard of a couple of these guys. I am, however, quite distressed to learn that Jeff Dunham makes more than Louis C.K. Not all of the millions the 11 men below (and they are all men) derive exclusively from stand-up performances, but according to Forbes methodology, the majority of it does. Here are the 11 highest-paid stand-up comedians.

Spiderman Plays Basketball.... Amazing Spiderman 2
12 jul 2013 00:00

You don’t always need to feel embarrassed when a dude in a Lycra bodysuit schools you at streetball. If the schooling is done by The Professor, it’s totally acceptable to get trounced on the court. This is streetball legend Greyson “The Professor” Boucher, giving out some lessons on how to play b-ball with your entire head wrapped in a Spider-Man mask. Step one seems to be move your feet around a lot, and do it really fast. Step two is maybe something like bounce the ball. Step three is make the ball go into the hoop? We don’t really “do” sports.

2013 Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest
11 jul 2013 14:02

In this cute video, made by comedian Kevin Maher, little kids attempt to undertake a Nathan’s-style hot dog eating contest in Coney Island. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), things don’t go so well. Unlike what happens when we let our nephew eat as many hot dogs as he could, none of these children ate eight hot dogs and then threw up. One of them does run away though. If you like the idea of hot dog eating contests, but the actual practice of eating sixty franks makes you question whether or not the human race even deserves to still be on planet Earth, this is the video for you.

Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice
11 jul 2013 13:43

A sopping wet Colin Firth might be attractive to some, but an ENORMOUS, fiberglass sopping wet Colin Firth is attractive to nobody. In fact, some people are calling the giant statue of Firth as Mr. Darcy from ‘Pride and Prejudice’ “unsettling” and “kind of creepy.” The statue has been put in Serpentine lake in London’s Hyde Park to promote the launch of UKTV’s new Drama channel, which will air high-profile dramas from the UK, such as the 1995 adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ which inspired the statue. That’s right — the statue is inspired by the TV version of the book, since the scene itself wasn’t actually in Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ Adding one more level of absurdity to the statue — Colin Firth emerging soaking wet from the lake wasn’t even in the scene that wasn’t in the book. It’s a vision that exists solely in the imaginations of the types of people who like to imagine Colin Firth emerging soaking wet from a lake. Here’s the scene in question, just to confirm how strange this statue is, before it takes off on a tour of the UK (yes, really).

Awesome VHS Covers Remind Us Why Netflix loses to the Video Store

Ever since Netflix entered our lives, the internet movie business has pretty much put all other movie businnesses to shame. Literally. They've gone bankrupt. However, those of us old enough to remember the good old days of VHS rentals at the local Blockbuster remember what a fun adventure it was to troll around the horror section of the movie rental store. Those of us with awesome childhoods actually spent time watching these with out parent consent sometimes! These terribly bad horror movie VHS covers are a reminder of how awesome movie experiences can be. Something Netflix will never be able to accomplish with their aesthetic, digital media and they're little red envelopes in the mail. Let's take a trip to memory lane.

Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' Gets The Sesame Street Mashup Treatment
10 jul 2013 17:20

Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” (feat. Pharrell Williams) is the song of the summer, and mashups involving Sesame Street set to good music are delightful. Now Adam Schleichkorn of the aptly titled Is This How You Go Viral and of Mylo the Cat fame has created a mashup of “Get Lucky” and footage from Sesame Street. And sure, it may seem weird for Grover to sing about getting some and staying up for good fun, but is that any less uncomfortable than seeing the POTUS sing it? These monsters just want the same things we do: eating cookies, finding the monster at the end of the book, and getting lucky. Enjoy.

We’ve seen quite a few examples lately of cool dads hacking old video games to make them more fun for their kids — for instance there was the dad who swapped Mario for Pauline in the original Donkey Kong, so his daughter could play as a girl. Awww. Well, the hack we’re about to tell you is a little bit…different. A Redditor by the name of Pourmeanother77 edited Super Mario 64 so that all the goombas have his son’s face. So yes, this guy’s kid can now spend his days brutally stomping his own visage. To be fair, I totally would have loved doing that as a kid. Wife Caught On Tape Hiring Hitman To Kill Husband
10 jul 2013 17:08

Ohio and Florida get all the credit, but let’s not forget about the dead jellyfish mecca known as New Jersey when it comes to stories involving crazy, trashy people. Today’s installment involves former-Keyport, NJ, resident Julia Merfeld, who was caught on tape hiring an undercover Michigan police officer to be her hitman (for $50,000), proving that although you can take the girl out of New Jersey, you can’t take the New Jersey out of the girl. “If you can get him outside, that would be great,” a giggly Julia Merfeld said after agreeing to the $50,000 hit — only to later learn she was speaking with an undercover Michigan state police detective. “But if you absolutely can’t, I’ll understand,” she added. “Because it would be messy in the house.” “Terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him,” [Merfeld] explained about her lethal choice…“It’s going to break my heart when it happens, but it’s something that I’ve been thinking about for awhile.” Merfeld pleaded guilty to solicitation for murder and faces a minimum of six years in prison, where she’ll never be able to watch Timothy Olyphant in Hitman again.

I’m still a little unclear on the connection between the proposer, Matt Hulbert, and Zach Braff, but apparently the pitch to real life JD was something along the lines of, “Let’s make it dusty EVERYWHERE.” Really the only thing this proposal is missing is Donald Faison jumping out of a closet and doing the Turk dance when she says yes. In Praise Of The Burger King Croissan'Wich
10 jul 2013 17:07

Croissants are all the rage these days. People are going apesh*t for the Cronut — a croissant/donut hybrid — and Kanye West’s Yeezus gives a shout-out to the delicious French pastry. And then this afternoon I ran across this: the “Croger,” a cheeseburger that uses a croissant as its bun. Now, I guess you can say that the croissant is having its moment — one that is all too well-deserved, because croissants are freaking delicious. But let’s give credit where credit’s due: Burger King was waaaayyyy ahead of the curve on this croissant trend. Like, 30 years ahead of the curve. Remember, Burger King rolled out the Croissan’Wich in 1983. Prior to the introduction of the Croissan’Wich, the dominant fast food breakfast sandwich was the McDonald’s Egg McMuffin, which was and is disgusting for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that they’re served on English muffins, and biting into an English muffin is akin to biting into an old shoe covered in sand. I have never eaten an Egg McMuffin in my life, nor do I ever plan to. But I’ll eat the sh*t out of a Croissan’Wich! Additionally, for many people who grew up in rural areas with limited access to the outside world — people like myself — the Croissan’Wich was our first introduction to the croissant. It was goddamn cultural phenomenon!

10 Perfect-World Acting Nominees For The 2013 Emmys

Circle of life. So before our blood pressure rises for the most insignificant of reasons, I thought it'd be fun, or at least maddening, to pick who SHOULD be nominated in the acting (and only acting; will save writing and outstanding comedy/drama/animated programs for another time) categories for the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards, using the ballots that are online. This is a Modern Family and Two and a Half Men free zone, and the world's better off for it.

Floating Umbrellas Once Again Cover The Streets in Portugal
10 jul 2013 13:06

Do you remember the colorful Floating Umbrellas installation in the streets of Agueda, Portugal we posted last year? This year, Sextafeira Produções has once again hung up hundreds of colorful umbrellas, transforming your shopping experience or the afternoon walk into a Mary-Poppins type of adventure! The colorful sight was captured by photographers Patricia Almeida and Pedro Nascimento, and the pictures went viral on the Internet in no time. Just like the last year, Patricia was one first ones to post them on flickr giving everyone a chance to take a virtual walk in the most colorful street of Portugal. “I felt like a kid, amazed by all that color!” says Patricia about how she felt under the umbrellas. The best part, besides looking awesome, is that the installation also protects everyone from rain and sun. The project is part of the local Agitagueda art festival, and will be up throughout July, so make sure you stop by if you’re traveling nearby!
