Jodie Foster's Cecil B. DeMille Award Speech Went Weird
14 jan 2013 13:01

Jodie Foster’s speech, accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes, included a confusing rant about her 50th birthday, how much she loves acting (even though it sounded like she was retiring), and how much she loves women (Cydney Bernard, to be specific). Her six minute monologue was taken by some as cryptic and confusing, causing many LGBT activists to criticize Foster's choice of words. Many people are saying that the televised "coming out" speech would have been more powerful, had it been more straightforward and quick to the chase.

Light in the Darkness
14 jan 2013 12:33

The qualities of light in a picture influence our perceptions of subjects by setting mood, revealing texture, and shading detail. These qualities appear in countless varieties of light: the shaft of sunlight in a dark scene, the gentle bath of sidelight from a big window, the cold fade of dusk, the warm glow of a tungsten bulb or a late afternoon, the eerie pulse of an electronic screen, the candy splash of a neon sign, and the contrast of a backlit silhouette. Shadows simplify, hide, and dramatize in an endless dance with illumination. The pictures collected here are united not by theme, but by photographers writing with light.

Fashion Weeks, World Wide Last Year
14 jan 2013 12:27

For some, fashion is a corporate industry. For others, it's an artistic expression. And for still others, it's an embrace of cultural traditions. Fashion is a shallow pursuit in the eyes of many, and a deep embodiment of identity for others. Definitions of what is fashionable are myriad and contradictory, but the annual spectacle of the presentation and the scramble of the preparations endure long after this year's look is forgotten.

Russian artist Arkady Kim has recently created the world’s largest coffee bean mural which was unveiled in Moscow’s Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure. “The Awakening” was made out of 1 million coffee beans and took twelve days to complete. Weighing 397 pounds and spanning about 30 square meters it beats the previous record by Albanian artist Saimir Strati by 88 pounds and 5 square meters. Creative Nail Art by Kayleigh O’Connor
14 jan 2013 10:05

Bob Maynard once said that “Problems are opportunities in disguise.” And this is exactly what happened to Kayleigh O’Conno, a 24-year-old media student at Birmingham City University (UK), who had a habit of finger biting. “I started glueing on false nails when I was around 16/17 (because I bit my own so badly that they looked like something out of a horror film – and not in a good way). After a while I started painting designs on them so they didn’t look so boring, and then it went a bit crazy, with different shapes sizes and all that… Now I mainly make them for fun and like to change them a few times a week I never used to take pictures of my nails until people started telling me I should (and, I found out that if I kept some sort of blog somewhere, I’d get a better mark for one of my old Uni assignments ). So, that’s why I’ve started keeping pictures of them before they get lost or broken (which is usually what happens).”

The Doomed Village of Doel And Its Amazing Street Art

Doel is a 700 year old village situated near the river Scheldt in Belgium, that is currently facing the threat of demolition. Its only crime is that it’s located too close to the port of Antwerp. Somewhere in the 1970's it was decided that the Antwerp harbour needed to expand, and Doel quickly became a target for demolition. The construction of a large dock and container terminal capable of receiving deep-sea ships is already underway on a site immediately next to the village, and the Port Authority proposes building a second one where the village now stands.

The Skeleton Lake of Roopkund, India
14 jan 2013 09:48

Roopkund is a glacial lake located at an altitude of about 5,029 metres in Uttarakhand, a state in India. When the ice melts, hundreds of human skeletons are seen below the surface or floating in the waters. The lake was first discovered in 1942 by a game reserve ranger, although there are reports about these bones from late 19th century. Initially it was speculated that the remains were those of Japanese soldiers who had sneaked into the area, and then perished to the ravages of the inhospitable terrain. This being the time of World War II, the British immediately sent a team of investigators to determine if they had stumbled upon some secret enemy move. However, upon investigation it was discovered that the corpses couldn’t belong to Japanese soldiers, as they weren’t fresh.
