Coffee painting is becoming more and more common, but Indonesian artist Ghidaq al-Nizar has taken a new approach by painting his coffee watercolors on leaves and by using coffee grounds in his compositions. Al-Nizar calls his art #zerowastecoffee because he usually paints it with what’s left of his morning coffee, making sure that none of it, not even the coffee grinds, goes to waste. What I care to acknowledge about this body of work is the idea of making art from a mistake, as a spill of coffee on the stove could be experienced like. The alchemy of this process is to bring meaning and purpose to something that apparently went wrong. On the other hand it also proposes the factor of resourcefulness into the art discussion, something which is becoming more popular these days, as well as the glorification of impermanence (and this applies to my coffee spills) as the artwork...

A creative company in California called Reduce. Reuse. Grow has designed a coffee cup that is not only biodegradable, but even has seeds in its walls so that it can be planted and grown! The cups, which are currently part of a Kickstarter campaign, will have seeds embedded in their walls based on their locations. Participating stores will encourage people to plant the cups themselves or to return them to be planted by the company.

Even when drawn on the side of a Starbucks coffee cup, Tolkien’s big and beautiful world of Middle-Earth (the setting for the Lord Of The Rings) is an impressive place. Liam Kenny, an artist in Liverpool, spent 5 hours recreating this epic map on the side of a cup that he later handed over to a barista who posted pictures online.
