6 Things About 'The Office' You May Not Have Known
13 may 2013 01:37

Over on TV Guide today, they sat down with the producers and cast of NBC’s The Office, which will end its nine-season run next Thursday, and talked about the origins of the show, and what could’ve been. Some of this stuff many of us may have known, but other stuff I am hearing for the first time. It’s fascinating to think where the show — which apparently tested horribly with audiences — could’ve ended up. Read the whole TV Guide piece here, but here’s a brief synopsis of the 10 Secrets about The Office revealed in it.

13 may 2013 00:00

This strange marine creature washed up dead on Pukehina Beach in the Bay of Plenty last week after some violent storms. Can anyone identify what it is? It is has a huge head and teeth with rudimentary flippers. It seems about 9M in length but the lower part of the body is probably mainly entrails from an attack.

This Gigantic Face Represents Women's Rights In Holland
12 may 2013 23:49

Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada is world renowned for his terrestrial artworks. Recently collaborated with Mama Cash (a feminist foundation based in the Netherlands) to create a giantic portrait of a female face in Zeeburgereiland, Amsterdam. “Using fertile soil to create this piece becomes a metaphor for what can come forth if the vision of these women is respected and allowed to bring about change.” The area itself is slightly larger than two football fields, such was the magnitifue of the work, Jorge enlisted the help of 80 volunteers to help him build and arrange the face. In doing so they powered through 7 metric tons of straw, a staggering 5 miles of rope, over 1,000 wooden poples and 5,300 cubic feet of soil to transform Jorge‘s vision into reality.

You Won’t Even Recognize Zooey Deschanel Without Bangs
10 may 2013 16:13

Whoa. They say that bangs can change your look and give you a boost — just ask Michelle Obama. But in the case of quirky-cute actress Zooey Deschanel, who’s known for her signature fringe, she’s rendered instantly and totally unrecognizable without it. The actress wore her face-framers swept back at the 2013 Met Gala this week, while the rest of her locks were pulled into an updo. Be honest — if we didn’t tell you it was Deschanel, would you know it was her? She looks markedly, drastically and severely different. Bangs are youthful, and without ‘em, the 33-year-old Zooey does appear a tiny bit older. Now we know why she rocks the bangs — because they flatter her face and look adorbs. Without them, she’s still pretty, but she blends in with the crowd instead of standing out from it. Zooey, you’re beautiful and we love you. But please, we implore you — don’t go sans bangs again. It’s like one of those optical illusions we can’t figure out.

Justin Timberlake Meets ‘Iron Man 3′ in ‘Suits That Fly’

‘Weird Al’ Yankovic may have some company in the song parody game. This video for ‘Suits That Fly’ is a very well-done take on Justin Timberlake’s ‘Suit & Tie’ that pays homage to ‘Iron Man 3.’ It even features a singer who looks eerily similar to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and a sultry blonde in the vein of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts. Check out the original video for ‘Suit & Tie’ to compare and see if ‘Weird Al’ really does have some new competition. And while you’re in a Justin Timberlake parody mood, take a listen to our ‘Suit & Tie’ parody song, ‘Fruit and Pie.’

Watch a Sweet ‘Yo Mama’ Battle for Mother’s Day
10 may 2013 16:09

If you’re having a hard time coming up with a nice thing to say to your mom, because you want to say something nice, but you don’t want to sound too sincere because GROSS people shouldn’t share their feelings like that, you should watch this video from Rhett and Link. It’s a “Yo Mama” rap battle, but with compliments instead of insults, because Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Actually, let’s just be nice to moms everyday, or are we going to have to make you watch the childbirth video from health class again? Here a couple of their more choice compliments, in our opinion: “Yo mama’s so full of joy and cheer, she put the detergent industry out of business.” “Yo mama’s so intelligent that she makes me feel inferior when I don’t use words good.” “Yo mama’s so enjoyable she like a hug wrapped in laughter wrapped in a magic show wrapped in a delicious chicken burrito.” Awww. Have you complimented yo mamma today?

New Movie Trailer: Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks
10 may 2013 15:31

This is going to sound weird, but I’ve always wondered what exactly goes on on those massive container ships going back and forth across the ocean carrying our iPads and illegal sex slaves. I mean how much work is there to do every day, really? Does the crew just play cards all day? Is there TV? Is it like being a pirate, only lazier? Because I could do that job. Anyway, Captain Phillips may not answer all those questions, but it does depict a container ship crew on a less-than-typical day, when they got boarded by Somali pirates in 2009. Based on the book by Richard Phillips, the captured captain of the Maersk Alabama – the first American cargo ship to get captured in 200 years, according to the synopsis – and directed by the Bourne series’ Paul Greengrass, it stars Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips and Johnny Depp in blackface as all of the pirates with supporting work by Hanks’ plucky first mate, a volleyball named Wilson (okay, part of that sentence may not be true). It doesn’t look all shaky-cammed to death like the Bourne movies, so at least there’s that.

The Creator Of QWOP Has Turned Chess Into A Twitch Game
10 may 2013 15:07

Chess is the game of kings, beloved by self-styled smart people and old guys in parks the world over. But it’s also a sedate game. Leave it to Bennett Foddy, the game designer who elevated trolling to an art form with QWOP, to turn it into something so fast you’d need amphetamines to follow it. The rules are simple: Each of the sixteen players takes control of a pawn, and then you play chess. You lose your pawn, you jump into another piece and keep going. It’s… frantic. Here’s the full video explaining the game, or you can just click this link to see the game in action: http://www.foddy.net/

Aaron Paul Will Call Your Wife A Bitch If You Ask Him To
10 may 2013 15:04

Vulture did an interview with Aaron Paul where the Breaking Bad star discussed his character’s affinity for the word “bitch,” and the effect it has had on him in his everyday life. The whole thing is interesting, mostly because Aaron Paul is a hyper-excitable dude who seems like a blast to interview, but my favorite part was this section, for about five or six different reasons. “So many people come up to me and say, ‘Please, just call me a bitch.’ Or on Twitter they’ll go, ‘It’s my wife’s birthday,’ or, ‘It’s our anniversary, will you please call my wife a bitch?’” Ever the gracious actor, he obliges. “I’ll send all these direct messages to random people with just the word bitch. People love it. It’s so funny.” Is it weirder to do it in person? “No, I just roll with it. I think it’s great. I mean, it can depend on the setting. If I’m at dinner that can be odd, but if I’m just running around … The most classic one was a few months ago when I was walking in London. I had just picked up a Gatorade at a little market and this guy screams out, ‘Gatorade me, bitch!’ and I turned and threw him the Gatorade. I went, ‘Yeah!’ threw it to him, and walked off. It was pretty great.” http://www.vulture.com/2013/05/breaking-bad-aaron-paul-on-his-bitch-legacy.html

David Foster Wallace's 'This Is Water' Speech In The Form Of A Film
10 may 2013 14:40

It’s almost cliche at this point for a person running a blog or a website to post anything related to David Foster Wallace — almost akin to a college English major going around quoting The Cather in the Rye at every turn — but this is too good not to post. If you’re unfamiliar with Wallace’s “This Is Water” speech, it’s one he gave in 2005 at the commencement ceremony at Kenyon College in Ohio. It’s a call on graduates to live a compassionate life and it touched on such things as “the difficulty of empathy,” “the importance of being well adjusted,” and “the essential lonesomeness of adult life.” A brother and sister film-making team who work under the moniker “The Glossary” made the video embedded above because, in their words, Wallace’s speech was “some of the best life advice we’ve ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education.” Enjoy.

Abercrombie And Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries Reminded He's Ugly By Internet
10 may 2013 14:32

Over the last twenty-four hours or so Abercrombie and Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries has come under fire thanks to new assertions from retail analyst and author Robin Lewis that Jeffries “doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people.” This has led to the internet digging up a less-than-flattering Salon article on Jeffries from 2006, where the sixty-plus year-old CEO of the apparel company seemingly hellbent on giving teenagers body dysmorphia says “dude” a lot and makes multiple rather non-PC statements on personal attractiveness. Oh, and did I mention that Jeffries looks like a sixty year-old guy trying to look like an Abercrombie model? Well, Reddit has certainly taken notice, and in a somewhat misguided (classic Reddit) attempt to right the wrongs perpetrated against less conventionally attractive retail shoppers everywhere, they want to point out to the world just what a weird-looking freak/hypocrite Mike Jeffries is. Here are some of the most popular examples…

'Scribblenauts' Being Sued By Nyan Cat And Keyboard Cat Owners
10 may 2013 14:14

Apparently Keyboard Cat and Nyan Cat are owned by somebody, and those somebodies are very angry over Scribblenauts not paying up for their memes. If you’re not familiar with Scribblenauts, it’s a puzzle game where you write anything you can think of on the screen and it actually creates it in the game world. It’s very cute and surprisingly challenging, but apparently its use of memes has gone too far according to a few gentlemen. The gentlemen in question are Charles Schmidt and Christopher Orlando Torres, Keyboard and Nyan respectively, and they want, well, a lot of money: "Defendants are accused of shamelessly using identifying “Nyan Cat” and “Keyboard Cat” by name to promote and market their games. Plaintiffs claim that Warner Bros and 5th Cell’s trademark infringement was willful and intentional and are requesting an award of treble damages and requesting the case be deemed exception under 15 U.S.C. § 1117(a), thereby entitling Plaintiffs to an award of reasonable attorneys’ fees." The suit names both 5th Cell, the developer, and Warner Brothers, the game’s publisher. It’s a little late, if you were wondering: The game hit in 2009. It’s unfortunate that apparently a game can’t even make a pop culture reference anymore without being sued, but we’ll see how that works out legally: One suspects either the gentlemen in question won’t be able to prove they “own” the meme, or that a wild settlement will appear and magically end the battle. http://www.iptrademarkattorney.com/schmidt-v-warner-bros-meme-copyright-complaint.pdf

Grumpy Cat Had An Art Show Once. It Wasn't Awful.
10 may 2013 01:00

Last year Grumpy Cat (AKA Tardar Sauce) won us over with her cuddly curmudgeonliness. This little Ron Swanson in the form of a snowshoe cat became even more popular than we could have imagined, justifying a second meme watch filled with fan art and photoshops. But the fan dedication doesn't end there. Now an arts center put together The Grumpy Cat Art Project to raise money for a children's playground. The Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment center in Huntsville, Alabama, collected Grumpy Cat art by over 30 artists in residence at Lowe Mill, the largest arts center in the Southeast US. "Art can elevate even the silliest subject," says Dustin Timbrook, one of the event's organizers. Grumpy Cat could use some elevation; have you seen how stumpy her cute little legs are? Well, you can see her legs in this GIF, which was also Grumpy Cat's response to whether or not she'll check out the show's opening on May 31st.

Another Harlem Shake Video Ends In Flames
10 may 2013 00:53

Like any good meme, the Harlem Shake was old before it even had a chance to be young, probably because of the fact that the dance being performed in thousands upon thousands of videos was not actually the Harlem Shake. But a little thing like accuracy has never stopped the Internet from creating something and then exploiting and milking it into complete nothingness until it’s nothing but an email that your mom will send to you in eight months. And so we thought that we had seen the end of the Harlem Shake several weeks ago when one attempt at this zany fad resulted in a person falling into a massive campfire. Alas, the memo hasn’t made the full rounds, as we have a new Harlem Shake video on YouTube, and it ends rather similarly to that last one.

Watch The Sheen Bros Beat Michael Jordan In A Basketball Challenge
10 may 2013 00:52

If Obama had an emergency meeting with Congress and initiated a Youtube tax today, I wouldn’t object because YouTube is doing God’s work by providing us with videos like this one. The good folks at Grantland dug up this video of Michael Jordan in a basketball challenge against Martin Sheen and his up-and-comer son Charlie. The video is from 1988 and you can tell it’s old by the fact MJ isn’t wearing his JNCO jeans and Charlie isn’t backstroking Scrooge McDuck style in coke and Hep B. In the video, Jordan tries to beat the Sheens in a three-part competition where he sets ridiculous handicaps for himself (free throws with his eyes closed? Two on one to 10 with the Sheens spotted five points?) and actually loses. You just have to imagine His Airness was secretly fuming over the fact he lost. If he didn’t immediately challenge them after cameras stopped rolling, he may still hold a grudge against the Sheens to this day. In fact, Jordan was so angry about losing that he vowed if he ever did any work with one of the Sheens he’d wear a Hitler mustache and make everyone go along with it. You go, MJ. You always win.

‘Melinda Brown Duncan Is The New Charles Ramsey,’ Says Idiots
10 may 2013 00:47

Remember Antoine Dodson’s Internet explosion? Of course you do. And then right afterwards we had Sweet Brown and the guy who lost his cheeseburger. Why? Because stations were essentially going out looking for the craziest-looking people they could find and get a million YouTube views as if that’d make me want to tune into the news in Des Moines or wherever. Well, it’s started up again. This journalistic blaxploitation has reared its ugly head now that Charles Ramsey is more famous for his perm than the fact he saved a few lives. The first big video comes out of Detroit where a news station tracked down this woman – Melinda Brown Duncan – and let her rant about whatever the hell she wanted to talk about for a minute. Of course, if this were a pre-YouTube era, the footage would have landed on the cutting-room floor. But in an attempt to get YouTube views, she got her say on the air. And now outlets are calling her the next Ramsey Brown because Black people. Obviously. So get ready for the auto tune videos, laughs and good times. I’ll just kick back, watch Amos N’ Andy and thank goodness we don’t live in those times anymore. Whew.

Conker's Bad Fur Day: Squirrel Vivisection And Pikachu Beating
10 may 2013 00:38

Conker’s Bad Fur Day is a pretty edgy game — kind of shockingly so considering it was funded by Nintendo and released back in 2001. That said, just because countless dick jokes and a giant singing poop monster made it through to the final product, doesn’t mean a lot of other stuff didn’t hit the cutting room floor. An uncensored beta version of Conker just popped up online, and folks are discovering it contains all sorts of interesting cut content, and it’s not exactly the stuff you might expect (more poop, dick and boob jokes). One of the cut scenes features a rather disturbing vivisection of another non-Conker squirrel. Another (very unpolished) scene involves Pikachu taking a beating from a mobster. Gee, wonder why that idea was shot down?
