The World Wide Web Went Public 20 Years Ago Today (A GIF Celebration)
06 may 2013 17:09

On April 30th, 1993 CERN released the technology behind the World Wide Web into the public domain for all of us to use without paying royalties. It was a glorious day, and we're going to celebrate with pictures both about the web and made possible by the web. So meta. You may know CERN as the scientists playing smashy smashy with atoms in the Large Hadron Collider until they found the Higgs Boson. But Sir Tim Berners-Lee and his team at CERN also developed the World Wide Web, which isn't the internet itself but rather the tubes with which we find all those cat pictures. They invented it in 1991, and Berners-Lee developed a version which could send photos the next year. The first picture uploaded to the World Wide Web was this one back in July of 1992.

Game Of Thrones Season 3 Episode 6: Jon Snow And Ygritte Highlight
06 may 2013 17:01

Let’s revisit Ygritte going full Overly Attached Girlfriend early in the episode with a captioned screengrab and corresponding GIFs I’m a little too eager to share. Show her you know something once Jon Snow, amirite? Anyway, things got a — shockingly — bit more tense for the burgeoning couple later on, but I’ll leave that for tomorrow’s discussion. Until then, here’s Ygritte letting Jon Snow he’s not going off to college without a girlfriend…

Mad Men Season 6 Episode 5: Megan's Mom Channels Lucille Bluth GIFs
06 may 2013 16:58

Julia Ormond has done a f-ing fantastic job of portraying Marie Calvet, Megan Draper’s increasingly bitter mother, hasn’t she? In the last night’s episode, she took the character to a whole new level when she channeled TV’s most popular drunken matriarch, Lucille Bluth from Arrested Development. If Cersei Lannister (Game Of Thrones) is the younger, drunk version of Mrs. Bluth, then think of Marie as a drunk, French Lucille 2. She knows how to zing her daughter…

Arrested Development Netflix Primer: I've Made A Huge Mistake GIFs
06 may 2013 16:57

As has been pointed out in numerous places today, our final countdown to Arrested Development on Netflix is under the three week mark, which has many hardcore fans participating in an unofficial “season per week” marathon that will sure to be reflected on the internet over the next twenty days. If I can’t find a horny immigrant by then hammer home the same point to you guys via GIFs then I don’t deserve to stay here. And what better way to remind everyone to get to binging and not make a huge mistake than with (almost) every “I’ve made a huge mistake” GIF from the first three seasons…

5 Games You Want Coming Out This Week (May 6th - 12th)
06 may 2013 16:54

Keeping track video game releases isn't as easy as it once was -- the volume of games released each week is constantly expanding, and they're spread over a mind-boggling array of platforms (consoles, PC, Mac, handhelds and mobile). Well, I'm here to make things a little easier on you. Every week I'll rattle off five games I think you should check out. These articles are not meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week -- think of them as a nice rounded tasting menu. Each week I'll try to highlight several games from different corners of the gaming landscape (handhelds, consoles, indie, PC, you name it) then finish up with a "Pick of the Week".

Westboro Baptist Church To Picket Jeff Hanneman's Funeral
06 may 2013 16:38

I love everything about this story, except for the part where Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman is dead while everyone involved with the Westboro Baptist Church remains alive. The Westboro Parish Church has announced that they plan to protest the funeral of Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman. The fundamentalist Christian group has a history of picketing outside funerals of dead US soldiers and concerts of artists, with Radiohead and Foo Fighters being past victims of their attention-seeking hatred. The group plan to perform their cover of Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Crazy Train’ at the funeral. (Via) They even sent out a tweet, so you know they mean business.

The New 'Man Of Steel' TV Spot Is Just A Wee Bit Epic
06 may 2013 16:35

If the Man Of Steel trailer and GIF roundup weren’t enough Superman epic-ness for your liking, a new TV spot and poster are here to save the day. The TV spot aired on ABC and includes a few new bits of footage, like Superman shouting something (Dad?) and flying around IN SPACE. We’ve also learned from an interview with Henry Cavill in British GQ that he could have lost the Superman role in Man Of Steel because he didn’t answer his phone when director Zack Snyder called him to make an offer. The reason he didn’t answer? He was engrossed in playing World of Warcraft. Says Cavill, “I saw it was him [calling] but the thing is, you can’t save World of Warcraft, you can’t pause it. It’s live.” Cavill did return the call, so there’s at least one person out who’s able to escape from Azeroth. But we can’t all be Superman.

The First 'Fully' 3D-Printed Gun Had A Successful Test Firing
06 may 2013 16:28

Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed was previously mentioned here for 3D-printing a key component of an AR-15 rifle and then making the first 3D-printed AR receiver which fired over 600 rounds without breaking. Now Andy Greenberg of Forbes has watched him test a “fully” 3D-printed gun with mixed results. We put fully in quotes because Wilson used a standard metal nail as a firing pin, and he also had to insert an unnecessary six ounce piece of steel in the gun’s body to make the gun set off metal detectors in compliance with the Undetectable Firearms Act. This doesn’t mean, of course, that anyone who downloads the free CAD files will also insert useless metal, and the nail used as a firing pin isn’t a sufficient quantity to set off the alarm. Wilson calls this 3D-printed gun The Liberator after the one-shot pistols the Allies air-dropped into France during the WWII Nazi occupation. (He just up and Godwin‘d this whole thing before a commenter could do it.) When tested remotely, The Liberator could fire .380 caliber bullets without breaking (although it did misfire once). When he swapped out the interchangeable barrel for a 5.7×28 rifle cartridge, the 3D-printed gun exploded on the first shot. Here’s a close-up of the gun pre-explosion:

Ron Swanson's 15 Best Season 5 GIFs
06 may 2013 15:07

In a post-season finale interview with Entertainment Weekly, Parks and Recreation creator Ken Tremendous, er, Michael Schur said a sixth season of NBC’s best sitcom is “likely.” "While there’s no official word from NBC, signs and buzz point to a return visit to Pawnee. “I’ve been cautiously optimistic for five straight years, that’s not going to change,” says Schur. “I fully believe that we will be back next year, but until they actually make that phone call, I never like to say it’s a sure thing.” There are a plethora of reasons why Parks not returning would be terrible — many of which involve waffles and mouse rats — but the biggest is: there’s a new Swanson on the way. Now, I’m not going to refer to NBC baby killers, but…well, just renew the damn show, already. Until the official announcement comes, though, let’s take a look at some of the proud soon-to-be papa’s finest, most enlightening moments from season five.

Game Of Thrones Season 3 Episode 6 GIF Recap 'The Climb'
06 may 2013 15:05

“You’re hereee, there’s nothing I fearrr…” It speaks to our grand expectations of Game of Thrones that a storyline about a fiery redhead and her Dashboard Confessional fan lover climbing up a 700-hundred-foot wall made of ice could be considered kind of boring, and yet here we are: Jon and Ygritte added an unwanted “My Heart Will Go On” (or Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb”) feel to “The Climb,” leading to probably the weakest episode of the season. It’s not that I dislike the Wildings — they’re arguably the most sensible characters on the show; whereas the climb Littlefinger speaks of during his episode-ending monologue is figurative for those who bow to Joffrey, it’s all too literal for Mance Rayder & Co. But rather, when murderous kings and “sword swallower” quips are involved in King’s Landing, I’d much rather spend time there than Beyond (or On) the Wall, where much of the action in “The Climb” takes place. It also doesn’t help that Jon Snow lacks any semblance of charisma, at least for now. But now that the giant metaphor has been scaled and conquered, things should get better, for everyone except Ros. Poor, poor Ros.

Don Cheadle Goes Heavy Metal and Heavy Sexy in ‘Iron Man 3′
06 may 2013 14:40

Hey, Robert Downey Jr. isn’t the only sexy guy in ‘Iron Man 3,’ which blasts into US theaters on Friday, May 3. Don Cheadle also stars in the film — and damn, he’s looking fiiiiiine. Don Cheadle can be such an under-appreciated actor. He’s wowed in films like ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and rocks it every week on the Showtime series ‘House of Lies’ alongside fellow cutie patootie Ben Schwartz. But this weekend Cheadle gets into superhero mode as Rhodes, aka Iron Patriot, in ‘Iron Man 3.’ That’s right, Robert Downey Jr. isn’t the only sexy leading man strapping on an iron suit to save the day — after appearing in ‘Iron Man 2,’ Cheadle returns and gets into the heavy metal for action and adventure. Don is 49 years old, if you can believe it. No, really, just let that marinate for a second. The dude is almost 50 and he looks AMAZING. Whatever Vitamin Water he’s drinking or supplement he’s taking is totally working out for him. He also starred in ‘Boogie Nights,’ ‘Crash,’ last year’s ‘Flight,’ and the ‘Ocean’s 11′ trilogy, so you’ve definitely seen him around, but maybe you never realized how cute he is since he’s always on screen next to hunks like Brad Pitt, Mark Wahlberg, George Clooney and Denzel Washington. But ladies (and like-minded gentlemen), take notice.

‘The Great Gatsby’
06 may 2013 14:31

Oh blessed are we for we are receiving a new Leonardo DiCaprio movie! ‘The Great Gatsby‘ hits theaters next week, but why wait until then to swoon over Leo? Leonardo DiCaprio is a national treasure, a guy we’ve loved since he was on ‘Growing Pains,’ and who grew up to be quite the attractive young man. He stole our hearts in movies like ‘Romeo + Juliet’ and ‘Titanic,’ but then he decided he didn’t want to play your typical heartthrob roles anymore, so he got real with stuff like ‘The Departed,’ ‘Shutter Island,’ and ‘Inception.’ He’s definitely one of the most interesting and engaging actors working today, and is always selective about the roles he takes, working frequently with legendary director Martin Scorsese. But next week sees the release of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ a film in which DiCaprio reunites with his ‘Romeo + Juliet’ director Baz Luhrmann and everything comes full circle. This time around, Leo doesn’t seem to be playing a swoony cutie like Romeo — he’s more of a cad, this Gatsby guy, and he seems to have some pretty dark secrets. Let’s take a few minutes to admire the sexiness of this leading man who seems to only get more attractive with age — but don’t they all?

Honey Boo Boo’s Mama June Marries Sugar Bear: Redneck Style
06 may 2013 13:39

Never one to change their lifestyle because they’re making bank on reality TV, ‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo‘ matriarch Mama June got married this weekend in redneck style. And by that we mean “in a camouflage wedding dress with bright orange accents and rainbow colored flowers.” After meeting in an online chatroom nine years ago, June and her very own Sugar Bear finally tied the knot on May 5 in a backyard ceremony. For her parents’ wedding, Alana Thompson (the erstwhile Boo herself) wore a bright pink and orange tiered and rhinestone-studded floor-length gown — straight out of a glitz pageant, of course. Invites for the nuptials warned guests that “no cell phones, cameras, or outside video taping” would be allowed since the ceremony was being filmed by TLC. Workers at the event were also asked to wear “full redneck attire.” The new season of ‘Honey Boo Boo’ will air on July 17 on TLC. Aka the “what could you possibly be learning?” channel.

Hilarious Obituary for ‘Waffle House Mom’ Goes Viral
06 may 2013 13:08

We’re thinking Toni Larroux of Bay Saint Louis, MS., who died last week at 68, had a pretty quirky sense of humor. Her two surviving children certainly do. From the first line of the obituary they penned for their mother — “Waffle House lost a loyal customer on April 30, 2013. Antonia W. ‘Toni’ Larroux died after a battle with multiple illnesses: lupus, rickets, scurvy, kidney disease and feline leukemia” — you are clued in that this is not going to be the typical remembrance. As the obit progresses, the kids accuse mom of playing favorites, reveal unflattering nicknames, hint at illegitimate children and take shots at each other and other family members. The first local paper the Larrouxs submitted it to actually rejected the obit even though its conclusion, as well as its parenthetical phrasing, make it pretty clear that it is tongue-in-cheek. But another paper agreed to print it, and its dark and often awkward comedy struck a chord with readers who have pushed it to go viral. You can read the whole thing below. Do you think it goes too far? Or is it a fitting send off for a woman who obviously appreciated a good joke as much as a good waffle?

4 Sisters Photographed Every Year For 36 Years
04 may 2013 14:04

The year was 1975 when Nicolas Nixon, a professor of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art originally photographed his wife Bebe and her 3 sisters. They were so impressed with the result, they collectively decided to make it a yearly event, the annual family photo. 36 years later, the sisters and Nicolas had all kept their promise, resulting in these 36 beautiful and candid photographs. Despite the years changing, the four sisters Heather, Mimi, Bebe and Laurie always remained in their same positions from that original photograph back in 1975. Whilst the fashion, haircuts and indeed their lives & personalities continue to evolve and change over the years, one thing that is incredibly evident is just how much of a loving bond there is between the four of them. Avid cyclist and general bike fantastic Richie Trimble decided to shock locals in LA by taking out his 14.5ft custom bicycle out for a spin. He’s given it the rather apt name of ‘Stoopid Tall’ and just for good measure used a Go Pro camera to capture the view as he cycled around La Cinega Boulevard through to the famous Venice Beach – startling onlookers and locals as he went by. Whilst he thankfully didn’t fall off or injure himself, as you’re about to see he did get himself in some awkward predicaments such getting a little too close for comfort with a highway overpass…

Talented Mom Creates Epic Napkin Art For Her Kids Lunch

There’s already quite a few awesome parents out there, but creative mother of two Nina Levy takes it to a whole new level. She’s a photographer, illustrator and sculptor based in Brooklyn and for the past 6 years she’s been inking incredible cartoons and popular characters onto the lunchtime napkins for her two sons. "I usually get requests, although they are sometimes hard to fulfill “I want Nightwing and Kid Flash blowing up the Brotherhood of Evil while Batman and Superman watch. Our napkins usually come back home along with all the uneaten food. My younger son actually uses them for their original purpose, while the other tells me, “oh, I only use the napkin to get attention, I just wipe my hands on my clothes." Probably one of the most exciting things of being a kid (aside from getting to go home at the end of the day) was discovering what was in your lunchbox – but for these two, they get the added bonus of some amazing art as well. To date, she’s singled handily created a staggering 2,000 unique custom napkins – which she’s listed right here on her Daily Napkins blog Below are a few of our personal favs, talk about being an awesome mum.

Dumbfounding Client Feedback Turned Into Hysterical Posters
04 may 2013 13:47

Have you ever visited Clients From Hell? If even the slightly bit artistic or creative, you’ll find it is without a doubt one of the funniest sites on the internet. The premise is simple, graphic designers and creatives submit genuine comments and feedback from clients anonymously. Sounds ok so far doesn’t it? But the requests and responses utterly defy belief at times! From the ludicrous & absurd to countless moments where you feel compelled to just bury your face in your hands, such is the idiotic nature of the questions. They serve as an amusing insight into the maddening world in which creatives have to work and the daily battles they face to make their clients happy. Two Irish designers and Paddy Treacy & Mark Shanley knew exactly how that felt, so they decided to take the premise / concept further and turn those comments from clients into actual posters. They collaborated with numerous designers, illustrations and creative directors to collate all the feedback, highlighting the most dumb-founding requests and creating inventive & unique posters for each. They’ve titled the series ‘Sharp Suits’ and below is a selection from their hilarious endeavour, you can find out more about the project via sharpsuits.net
