“The Bear and the Maiden Fair,” written by George R.R. Martin (and last heard drunkenly shouted by the Hold Steady), has a lot more in common with season one’s “The Pointy End” than it does last year’s “Blackwater,” the other two episodes written by the Game of Thrones author. It continued existing storylines (Jon and Ygritte walking, Sansa and Margaery talking, etc.) and set up new arcs (Dany waging war with the Yunkai), without resolving anything, other than the Sad Saga of Theon’s Manhood. “Blackwater” was the cathartic (and literal) explosion after two years of off-screen battles; the biggest fight in “Maiden Fair” featured a bear and a wooden sword. Not that that scene wasn’t fantastic. Because it was. I mean, it’s a giant f*cking bear (named Bart!) fighting a human in a pit (and done a lot better than The Walking Dead‘s ring of zombies, with a better peformance from the 300-pound fuzzy tractor than the Governor to boot), and the episode overall was very, very good. Oddly, though, Martin wasn’t the star — that distinction belongs to director Michelle MacLaren, who Breaking Bad fans should know as the visual eye behind “Gliding Over All.” The way she filmed Joffrey’s chat with Tywin, with the camera angles reflecting the gradual power shift, was a thing of looming beauty. You could mute that scene and still know what was going on. Not that you’d want to miss a single Joffrey whine or Tywin smackdown.

When the Terminators arrive to kill us all, we have one hope. That hope is, apparently, that we live in World 1-3 of Super Mario Bros., because according to the not-entirely-serious research of Tom Murphy, robots really can’t handle platforms very well. But they can learn to play video games. Murphy has a highly amusing video detailing the incredibly stupid way his program started playing video games… but, over time, it learns to be a pretty solid Mario player:

Keeping track video game releases isn't as easy as it once was -- the volume of games released each week is constantly expanding, and they're spread over a mind-boggling array of platforms (consoles, PC, Mac, handhelds and mobile). Well, I'm here to make things a little easier on you. Every week I'll rattle off five games I think you should check out. These articles are not meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week -- think of them as a nice rounded tasting menu. Each week I'll try to highlight several games from different corners of the gaming landscape (handhelds, consoles, indie, PC, you name it) then finish up with a "Pick of the Week".

I found this interesting post by the Managing Editor of Visual News, Benjamin Starr and wanted to share. He made a collection of pictures with twitter posts from people who we'd consider as "first-worlders", complaining about the most ridiculous things. I think, although funny, they are a big red flag on our society and the focus of many people on their silly little problems. This kind of self-ceneted thinking diminishes peoples perspective on the world around them, and on the bigger problems, not only in their own lives but in other countries for example. You should be ashamed people!

Scottish installation artist and sculptor David Mach has a very unique style. He makes giant sculptures of fictional characters, people and animals from flowing assemblages of mass produced objects such as car tires, match sticks and bricks. In this case I present to you an amazing collection of his sculptures made from tiny clothing hangers! Wow, the guy must have loads of free time. But seriously though, these are great peaces of hard work and dedication!

Honestly I’m surprised it took this long to happen, but finally somebody has gone and built a real, street legal (which, I assume, means it’s not allowed to drive on roofs) Bat Tumbler. Commissioned by a group from Saudi Arabia, the Tumbler cost a whopping 1.6 million to make, and will be racing in the not-terribly-badass sounding Gumball 3000 (basically a race for novelty supercars owned by the mega rich). Hit the jump for a video of the Tumbler in action…

On a routine visit to his car dealership in Norman, Oklahoma, Redditor SquishyMcPhee came across a styrofoam cup that had been left behind by a former customer, but he immediately knew that it was no ordinary cup. The tiny container was covered in intricately crafted doodles with a simple ballpoint pen. Every inch of the cup is meticulously designed with patterns, text, and characters, as though it were a premeditated execution.

“Everything is covered in feces!” So posits a video from Glove and Boots explaining one reason you wouldn’t like travelling to the past. To be fair, people really were positively slathered in feces back in the Dark Ages. It’s in history books or the Wikipedias or whatever it is the kids are learning history from these days. Good luck with that, kids. We learned all the history we needed from 2001′s A Knight’s Tale starring Heath Ledger *tips a 40* and Shannyynn Sossassafras. Glove and Boots previously raised awareness of Vertical Video Syndrome, had their gorilla cover “Call Me Maybe”, and made us laugh with playthroughs of classic video games. Now they detail their ten reasons time travel sucks. They didn’t even mention the most important reason. The Earth rotates and moves in its elliptical orbit around the Sun, and the Sun orbits the galactic center, and the whole universe is expanding. You better get your coordinates in spacetime exactly right, or…

Men and women are represented differently all around the world, and this differentiation is often seen in the diverse representation of the two sexes in bathroom signs. The most common type of washroom sign one encounters in public places depict men as “normal” people and women as people in skirts. Depending on the local customs, men and women may be depicted wearing traditional or regional dresses. While most signs try to remain obvious, others goes out of the way and try to be as creative as possible. Below are some of the the most creative, funniest, wackiest and bizarre toilet signs discovered by travellers around the world.

Hand gestures and body language is as vital a communication medium as spoken language itself. Gestures pre-dates any language in the world, in fact, human communication evolved from gestures. It is not uncommon for people to use gestures even to this date to convey thoughts, punctuate an expression and give it a shading that the word or phrase itself lacks. But I wasn’t aware that they were so popular among Italians until I stumbled upon the Illustrated guide to Italian popular gestures by Alfredo Cassano.

Nothing says internet like unearthing high school photos of celebrities, and over at Reddit that concept has been ratcheted up a notch with a new collection of high school (correction: Jennifer Lawrence is in middle school, even hotter) cheerleading photos of well-known lady celebs in their pre-fame athletic supporter days. Pretty much a perfect combo. I couldn’t have been more compelled to share, favorites Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Poehler, and I’m not one to skirt the bylaws. J-Law’s fairly predictable image above, obvs. Amy’s way-more-awesome late 80s (or maybe late 50s?) cheerleading shot below. Followed by Megan Fox and Meryl Streep for good measure. Seriously though, we might have a time-traveling vampire situation on our hands with Ms. Poehler…

Peter Menzel and Faith D’Aluision traveled the world exploring how the eating habits differ from country to country and presented their results in a photo album, called Hungry Planet: What the World Eats. The wife and husband’s team visited 24 different countries and 30 families to photograph them at home, at the market, and surrounded by their weekly food supplies. Apart from being interesting and educative, the project brings up some social issues. The exposed weekly grocery list provides information not only about dietary habits, but also about health, economy, lifestyle, etc. It also clearly shows the division between the first world and the developing countries. Interestingly, less affluent families eat more nutritious food than those who could actually afford it. On the contrary, more economically stable families eat more processed food, while fresh products constitute just a small part of their diet. Come to think of it, how much does your family spend on food per week and what kind of food do you eat?

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know exactly what's happening here. This is what I've figured out so far: You know that FIAT commercial where the cars drive around underwater? The one that starts with the lady singing "When I hear the ocean calling"? Well, it's a full-length music video now, and it features Pitbull -- who has evidently taken a momentary break from hawing every carbonated liquid known to man so he can sell you tiny Italian cars -- storming a beach on a tricked-out, model-filled yacht like the Eisenhower of sexy dance parties. And there are surprise guests. And dancing seahorses. And the one girl from 3LW grinding on a giant party bro made out of sand. And mermaids. And catapults. Here's what I'm getting at: You should watch this video. I'm going to pick out the highlights and discuss them in a minute, as I have done with my other music video breakdowns, but really ... you should watch this video. Trust me on this.

According to this series of illustrations by artist Patrick Moberg, life would be much easier if we all took a few quick notes from the behavior of a dog. The artist says, "My family never had a dog when I was younger, so I don't know a whole lot about them, but recently there's been a couple running around the office I work out of. Here's a couple things I've picked up on." Lessons from a Dog is a collection of colorful illustrations that are paired with simple phrases like "Forgive friends who don't have time to play," and "When someone kindly prepares food for you, devour it smiling like it's the best meal you've ever eaten."

Have you ever looked at an object or building and thought, “hey that kind of looks like a face!”? It’s actually a psychological phenomenon known as pareidolia. Pareidolia involves a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant; it’s a form of apophenia (seeing meaningful patterns or connections in random or meaningless data). Online you can find entire communities dedicated to finding faces in everyday objects, places and buildings. On Flickr, the group FACES IN PLACES has over 6,365 members and a staggering 23,563 pictures. And on Reddit, there is a subreddit called /r/Pareidolia with nearly 40,000 members! You can also find countless Tumblrs, blogs and hashtags dedicated to this fascinating phenomenon that so many of us experience.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, though it may look and taste different depending on where you're from. While in America it is not out of the ordinary to have a stack of flapjacks and bacon as a morning meal, it is wildly different from Thailand's customary fish, pork, and rice dish. World traveling enthusiast Victoria Philpott took note of the various combinations of platters and variety of breakfasts commonly eaten each day along her travels. Rounding up fifty different and delicious meals that are typically eaten in dozens of countries, the globe-trotter shares an appetizing set of images on her blog from various sources of culturally unique breakfasts. Of course, everyone's taste palette is different but it is interesting, nonetheless, to see how different cultures interpret the best meal to start your day. It is also best to keep in mind that not all dishes are strictly the only breakfast anyone in any given country eats. Sometimes there just isn't enough time to prepare a full English breakfast and, other times, you want more than a simple croissant.
