Francis Wisniewski, has built two Downsize Fitness health centers in Chicago and Texas in 2011, and they have proven to be successful so far, and most importantly they are helping people who need it the most get healthier and happier. These centers are for overweight people only, you have to be at least 50 lb overweight to join. The trainers have all battled obesity, and the equipment is built to support heavier weight. The idea behind this is to make people feel welcomed, supported and not judged, since most feel like that in general gyms. I think this is an awesome idea, and surely will spread through out U.S.
Personal trainers at Downsize Fitness health clubs have all won the battle with obesity, so they can personally relate to the members.
These gyms are based on comfortable environment. Often times people who are obese feel insecure, judged and intimidated by the stares and talks by others at the gym. So this place provides a welcoming, non-judgmental and supporting atmosphere. "At other gyms, if I'm doing jumping jacks and my belly flops out of my shirt, I would stop," said one member "At this gym I don't care. The woman next to me is doing the same thing."
The equipment is built to support up to 600 lb, unlike the 350 limit in regular gyms. So there's no feelings of embarrassment when you realize that the machine can't hold you.
A sense of comradeship and acceptance is what keeps these people going.
