23-year-old Joe opted to have his left foot amputated after struggling with a rare disease known as Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS). While most would be heartbroken by this difficult decision, Joe has won our hearts with his wonderful attitude about the whole situation.
Before going through with the surgery, though, he decided to have a little fun with his family and friends.
They took pictures pretending to remove the foot themselves through some… unconventional methods.
The young man even got a tattoo on the leg that was scheduled for surgery, in the hopes of putting a smile on the surgeon's face.
The tattoo is of dashed lines going all the way around his lower shin with a scissors symbol and the message: "Please cut here."
His sister shares his story, calling her brother "my inspiration."
He was even able to put a few more smiles on people's faces at the hospital. His sister says, "Whenever the nurses came back from getting his medication, he'd put on this beard and say, 'What took you so long? I've been waiting here forever!'"
Joe admits, "There was a point a couple days ago when I became overwhelmed and lost it for about 30 minutes. I got a good cry out and felt better since then." He adds, "I look forward to running and playing rugby again. And just being able to do whatever I want with no limitations."
