Mysterious YouTube user Brusspup has just filmed the Chladni plate experiment in action. What is it exactly? It’s a combination of physics blending with art and it’s fascinating to watch. Firstly, a metal plate is linked up to a tone generator which emits different frequencies. Secondly a handful of sand is then poured over the plate. what happens next has quite extraordinary.

As different frequencies vibrate through the plate, the sand shifts into areas with the least amount of vibration – causing a series of beautiful, complex and unique geometric patterns to form. Interestingly enough, the higher the frequency the more intricate the patterns become, whilst lower frequences create simpler forms and shapes.
