The first iteration of the Atlantic City boardwalk opened in 1870 and it was the first boardwalk in the United States.. No commerce of any kind was allowed within thirty feet of the boardwalk and for the first several years, the boardwalk was taken apart and stored during the off-season.

The boardwalk experienced several overhauls, each larger and longer, until an 1889 hurricane brought about the 24-foot wide, 10-foot high, and nearly 4 miles long boardwalk with railings on both sides. It was improved and expanded in 1896 and is (was?) currently the longest boardwalk in the world. May she rest in peace, and perhaps one day be rebuilt.

Romania is rich in a variety of castles and each has a trace of Dracula. History of the Castle Corwin is also connected to this character. Rumor has it that seven years ago dethroned «real Dracula» - Wallachian Ruler Vlad Tepes - was held in this prison. Perhaps for this reason the castle begins with the torture room. Faint-hearted and children should not look under the cut.

They Call Themselves Climbers

...but in fact they are potential suicides. Fear of heights does not exist for them, they do not even know any instincts of self-preservation. Joking with death is just their favorite game. For example, climbing old rusty stairs on a 300 meters top without a safety net or running on the edge of a roof of a 40 storey building. They do it not for any sporting interest or records, they simply like to have fun together in extreme conditions.

Interesting Facts about 18th Century
31 oct 2012 04:38

It is well known on Listverse that I love history; it may be lesser-known that the 18th century is my favorite period in time – followed shortly after by the Middle Ages. Many of our lists dealing with historic times tend to discuss the nice parts – not intentionally avoiding the bad – just lacking space on a list for both. This list looks at ten rather unfortunate parts of Western history in the 18th century.

Giant Gollum from Lord of the Rings
31 oct 2012 04:30

Designed by Weta Workshop NZ, Wellington was chosen as the airport due to its proximity to many of the filming locations used by the Lord of The Rings franchise. Wellington has actually already seen Gollum before, he was searching for the ring outside one of the airports gates, also with a sign stating “Welcome to the Middle of Middle Earth”. This second installation however can be seen by all in the terminal, and he would be hard to miss. Weighing in at 1.2 tons, made purely of polystyrene and finished in epoxy resin, this massive installation had to be made in 9 pieces just to fit through the door of the terminal. To put it into perspective, each of the fish are 4 metres long.
