It’s crazy to think that these days your trusty Smartphone is vastly more technologically advanced and powerful than the equipment was planning to propel Russian astronauts into space back in 1958-1963.
But back then, such a feat was considered to be the very peak of human innovation & enterprise – we had worked out how to leave our planet, but now rather paradoxically we have millions of devices that keep us all more connected within it.
Below are some retro posters from the Soviet military, designed to drum up public support for the space program, blatant propaganda has rarely looked so stylish – block fonts, powerful imagery and bold colours designed to make the impossible seem possible.
It worked too.
Over 60 years the Soviet space program was responsible for a number of pioneering accomplishments in space flight, many of which are still referenced and celebrated today. Those include the very first intercontinental ballistic missile (1957), space satellite (Sputnik-1), animal in space (a dog called Laika on Sputnik 2), human in space (the world famous cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on Vostok 1) and obviously first Moon impact (Luna 2).
