Exactly a month ago Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz and Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that Arrested Development would return in some form or another. And in the short amount of time since Mitch Hurwitz has apparently gotten hard to work. He’s just checked in with Rolling Stone to confirm that the next installment is in fact — in his mind anyway — a movie.
Mitch Hurwitz has good news for Arrested Development fans. “I’m working on the movie right now,” the show’s creator tells Rolling Stone. “I can’t get into much more detail because I don’t want to scare anybody off. I don’t want to be presumptuous about it. I don’t own the property outright – it’s a 20th Century Fox property. But everybody seems really into it and really eager to make a movie.”
OK, so it’s not set in stone, but I’ve gotta believe that if this is the direction Hurwitz wants to take the Bluths no one is going to stand in his way. He also must have gotten some form of a go ahead if he’s already working on the feature film version. And since we already knew Arrested Development would be back in some form or another the movie news is super swell and all but what I found most interesting came at the end of the interview…

Plans are obviously in flux at the moment, but Hurwitz’s ultimate goal is to make an Arrested Development movie and then another season of the show. “The whole thing is sort of unprecedented,” he says. “It’s always been its own little thing. I kind of feel like the more it stays original, the better chance it has. As soon as it goes back to trying to do exactly what it was before, you run the risk of doing a reunion show or something.”
A movie AND THEN a show again? I guess I’ve been thinking puny because I always just assumed a film would be the capper to the story. It never crossed my mind that they could go back. But that would perfect. Because as long as Hurwitz & Co. are intent on keeping us on our toes we’re in good hands. That very last line is all I need to be fully aboard. Because…
