Quiet Moments Set Within a Stunning Burma Landscape
15 mar 2013 11:16
Photographer Monica Denevan was born in San Francisco, California, but, more often than not, you're likely to find her traveling around the world, particularly to Burma and China. The first time she went to Burma, she says, "I remember being struck by the meditative beauty of the landscape, the sensory chaos of the cities, and the quiet elegance of the people." Quickly realizing that news coverage preferred a negative portrayal of Burma, Denevan decided to produce a body of work that documents life beyond the chaos.

Britain’s Telephone Box Libraries
15 mar 2013 11:15
The iconic red telephone boxes found all over the UK are beginning to disappear, but thanks to the effort of local communities and British Telecom, hundreds of them have been recycled into libraries. In 2002 there were 92,000 BT phone boxes on the streets of Britain. The figure has now fallen to 51,500, while just 11,000 of these are traditional red phone boxes. During the last 20 years, the company has stripped thousands of the iconic landmarks from locations across the country as people switched to using mobile phones and Internet.

Powerful Lion Sculpture Embedded into a Cliff
15 mar 2013 11:12
In Lucerne, Switzerland, there is a stone sculpture of a slain lion embedded in the face of a low cliff that pays tribute to the hundreds of valiant Swiss Guards that courageously met their demise in 1792 when revolutionaries attacked the Tuileries Palace in Paris. Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen designed the public structure known as the Lion Monument, which is also referred to as the Dying Lion or simply the Lion of Lucerne, in remembrance of the massacre that occurred during the French Revolution and to honor the brave men who lost their lives in the ambush.

Hibaku Jumoku: The A-Bombed Trees That Survived Hiroshima
15 mar 2013 11:10
After the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6th August 1945, with landscapes demolished, soils charred and radiation rampant, Dr. Harold Jacobsen, a scientist from the Manhattan Project, told the Washington Post that Hiroshima will be barren of life and nothing will grow for 75 years. But nature had other plans. The following spring, to everyone's surprise and delight, new shoots were seen springing up amongst the debris of the city. Those new saplings provided a powerful message to the survivors of the atomic bomb and gave them hope that they could rebuild their city.

Russia in Color, More Than Century Ago
15 mar 2013 10:23
Extraordinary collection of color photographs taken between 1909 and 1912. In those years, photographer Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook a photographic survey of the Russian Empire with the support of Tsar Nicholas II. He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images. The high quality of the images, combined with the bright colors, make it difficult for viewers to believe that they are looking more than 100 years back in time.

Swirling Animal Illustrations Blend Reality With Abstraction
15 mar 2013 07:58
Ben Geiger dabbles in everything from design to photography to sculpture to create a world of his own imagination. In this series entitled Abstract Animals, the artist developed illustrations that blur the lines between realistic portrayals and his own inventive depictions of the creatures. The basic structure of each animal drawing is true-to-life, but then the artist uses his creativity to build complex textures with swirls of lines and color.

Surreal Sculptures of Human Faces Frozen in Liquid
15 mar 2013 07:43
Hong Kong-based artist Johnson Tsang, who also goes by Tsang Cheung Shing, skillfully manipulates stainless steel and porcelain to produce a beautiful collection of sculptures that often blurs the line between abstract and figurative art. The sculptor is perhaps best recognized for his "Coffee Kiss" piece from his Yangyuang series, in which two kissing faces are formed out of what seems to be coffee spilling from a pair of cups. His body of work expands on this visual concept that takes surreal liberties with the indefinite form and properties of liquid.

Mind-Boggling Cabinet Designed to Look Like a Digital Glitch
15 mar 2013 07:37
Good Vibrations Storage Unit is a cabinet by architect Ferruccio Laviani that is designed to look like a distorted digital image. The puzzling piece of furniture was created for Fratelli Boffi, an annual interior show in Italy. While there is speculation that this image of the product is, itself, a digital rendering, it is yet to be proven either way. Assuming it's the real deal, Good Vibrations presents a cleverly enigmatic new era for furniture design in the digital age. Just as younger generations have assimilated to tablets in lieu of physical books and magazines, perhaps glitchy storage units will replace conventional wardrobe designs.
