Cherry Blossom Tree House
24 jan 2013 11:00
While we've heard of modern homes being built for grandiose views of the ocean, we've never heard of one being built for views of trees. But then again, the cherry blossom tree isn't like any ordinary tree. In Japan, cherry blossoms are richly symbolic. They are an omen of good fortune and a representation of love and affection. They're also an enduring metaphor for the fleeting nature of life, and as such are frequently depicted in art.

Blog Love: Downtown From Behind
24 jan 2013 10:59
Downtown From Behind is one of those photo projects you instantly fall in love with. Faceless New Yorkers ride their bikes through the streets of lower Manhattan. Doesn't seem glamorous but, strangely, it is. The photographs are taken by Bridget Fleming who moved to the Lower East Side from Australia in 2008. She hopes to capture "the heartbeat of New York" through the city's most creative residents - writers, designers, chefs, models, musicians, entrepreneurs and actors.

Incredible Packaging Tape Art by Max Zorn
24 jan 2013 10:21
Amsterdam-based artist Max Zorn uses packaging tape like no one else – instead of using it for packaging or fixing stuff, Max creates stunning tape pictures. The artist achieves different shades, hues and shadows by layering the translucent tape on the Plexiglass and cutting it with a scalpel. Once finished, his artwork can be seen hanging on the street lamps – as the lights go on, they shine through the pictures and create a beautiful graphic effect. Like most artists, he got this idea about using packaging tape completely by accident: “The idea to work with tape instead of paint was inspired by a friend who worked as a car designer at that time. These guys often use slim tapes to outline their ideas on large boards. I was surprised to see, how fast they could create stunning sketches with it.” Something similar happened with the discovery of street lamps: “The idea to use light as a medium was born during a nightly run through Amsterdam. The nice old street lamps with their golden light seemed perfect to be used as an open gallery,” says Max.

Animals Burst Through Gallery Walls and Glass Containers
24 jan 2013 10:14
Artist Tasha Lewis, who you may remember from these blue butterfly swarms, is currently showing a "moving" body of work at The Harrison Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. Using hidden magnets within her mixed media sculptures, she creates the illusion that a variety of animals and plants are bursting out of their containers or through the gallery's walls. Called Moments of Thaw, the show highlights, according to the artist, "the apparent momentary loss of solidity that the glass container, wooden box or plaster wall has experienced which allowed nature to break through."

Creative Street Art by OakOak
24 jan 2013 09:38
French street artist OakOak converts street objects, signs and other fixtures around his native city of St Etienne, France, into humorous street art. His work often includes pop culture references, cartoon, video games and his home town. Untrained in painting or fine art of any kind, he instead uses stencils, paint, and occasionally adhesive superheros to give new meaning to simple cracks in the ground or crumbling building facades.
