Xie Xu and his friend, Zhang Chi, made headlines around the world after their amazing story caught the attention of reporters. For three years, Xie has carried Zhang to school piggyback-style. Zhang suffers from a condition called muscular dystrophy. The condition weakens muscle, making it impossible for the person to walk or support their own weight. The boys live in a dorm near their school. Besides carrying him to and around school, Xie also helps Zhang cook meals and wash his clothes.
Without Xie's help, Zhang would not be able to attend school. It is estimated that over 240,000 students with disabilities do not attend school in China, according to a U.S. human rights report on China.

"They aren’t family, but Xie has been doing this for three years," said Guo Chunxi, the school's deputy headmaster. "He’s the most beautiful student. He also exerts positive influence on other students, who readily help Zhang. With their assistance, Zhang has never missed out on one single class," Guo said.
What does the future look like for these two friends? They have some big dreams after school is finished. The two students have hopes of attending university to study education.
Xie applied to the Nanjing Polytechnic Institute, and Zhang sat China's extensive college entrance exams in the spring.
Even though they will be going their separate ways after high school, the bond between these friends will last a lifetime.
