Indian Laundry Men
10 jan 2013 23:58

This 25-acre space is a chaotic conglomeration of rows of open-air concrete wash pens, each with its own flogging stone and rooms where the washermen, also known as "dhobiwallahs", sleep and work. Many of the over 700 families that make a living out of this Dhobi Ghat, who had followed their father into the business, a life of dunking, thrashing and drying close to 1,000 items of clothing each day for just 7 USD, are worried about the future as the workload has gone down considerably. Most ordinary Indians who have seen their disposable incomes rise as the country's economy expands, have dispensed with the services of the dhobiwallahs for good since most modern homes are equipped with a washing machine.

Popular Movie Poster Cliches
11 jan 2013 00:03
“Everything is a remix,” says the title of the famous short documentaries by Kirby Ferguson, discussing how newly created work is strongly influenced by existing work. You don’t have to look far to see it – just look at the movie posters. French blogger Christophe Courtois put together several telling montages of similar movie posters which perfectly illustrate how everyone copies everyone. Is it bad? Ferguson writes that “our system of law doesn’t acknowledge the derivative nature of creativity. Instead, ideas are regarded as property, as unique and original lots with distinct boundaries. But ideas aren’t so tidy. They’re layered, they’re interwoven, they’re tangled. And when the system conflicts with the reality… the system starts to fail.“

Beneath the Wave: Underwater Photos of Swimmers
11 jan 2013 08:28
Mark Tipple is the photographer and filmmaker behind ‘The Underwater Project‘, an ongoing reportage showcasing Australia’s relationship with the ocean. Tipple explains the serendipitous moment it all began: “I was bored of shooting empty waves. One day, I was caught inside by a big wave and as I dove underwater I suddenly thought I’d see what the kids next to me were going through – I turned the camera on them. That first image remains one of my strongest – I realised immediately that it was close to what I had been looking for ten years ago on my first surfing road trip.”

Fighting Protesters With Colored Water
11 jan 2013 08:34
You must have seen photos of protesters being doused with colored-water cannons by the police. Using water canon is understood as it’s an easy non-hazardous way to disperse mob, but why would police spray protesters with purple and pink water? Simple: to identify and arrest them later. Many water cannons on the market today come with a tank specially designed to store a semi-permanent colored dye. If police decide they want to "tag" protesters with the dye, they can press a button to inject it into the main water stream. Once the water cannon is trained on a crowd, anyone hit by the spray will be easily recognizable by police.

The Chromatic Typewriter
11 jan 2013 09:01
Washington-based artist Tyree Callahan transformed and old 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter into a functional painting device he calls a Chromatic Typewriter. He did it by replacing the ink pads of the typewriter with colored paint pads and the letters with color markers. “I’m super excited about it. The reaction to the piece has been pretty special. It seems to be making a lot of people happy and it has started some great discussions on the translation of art into words and words into art. And folks with synesthesia seem to like it the most, “ says Callahan.
