There was an epidemic of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2002/03, which started in China and infected 8,000 people around the world killing at a rate of 1 out of 10, mainly from kidney failure. A new virus has been discovered in 2012, that is thought to be a lot like SARS, and has most likely originated in Middle East. It has killed a man in Saudi Arabia, and left a man in London in critical condition. The main symptoms are: difficulty breathing, cough and chills. the virus is airborne and appears not to be easily spread from person to person. Michael Osterholm, a flu expert at the University of Minnesota voiced his concern saying “You don’t die from the common cold. This gives us reason to think it might be more like SARS.” This is a very serious situation and people aren't advised to travel until we know more!
This is why we call 'em man's best friend.
Doel is a 700 year old village situated near the river Scheldt in Belgium, that is currently facing the threat of demolition. Its only crime is that it’s located too close to the port of Antwerp. Somewhere in the 1970's it was decided that the Antwerp harbour needed to expand, and Doel quickly became a target for demolition. The construction of a large dock and container terminal capable of receiving deep-sea ships is already underway on a site immediately next to the village, and the Port Authority proposes building a second one where the village now stands.
Bob Maynard once said that “Problems are opportunities in disguise.” And this is exactly what happened to Kayleigh O’Conno, a 24-year-old media student at Birmingham City University (UK), who had a habit of finger biting. “I started glueing on false nails when I was around 16/17 (because I bit my own so badly that they looked like something out of a horror film – and not in a good way). After a while I started painting designs on them so they didn’t look so boring, and then it went a bit crazy, with different shapes sizes and all that… Now I mainly make them for fun and like to change them a few times a week I never used to take pictures of my nails until people started telling me I should (and, I found out that if I kept some sort of blog somewhere, I’d get a better mark for one of my old Uni assignments ). So, that’s why I’ve started keeping pictures of them before they get lost or broken (which is usually what happens).”
If you ever see some wild animal tracks in the cities like New York, Boston or Ottawa – don’t panic! It doesn’t mean that animals have broken out of the zoo. In his newest project “Outliers (Trace)”, talented Canadian artist Maskull Lasserre has designed a collection of shoes that leave realistic footprints of moose, deer, Kodiak bears, rabbits and other animals. Lasserre has been using them to leave animal tracks in Ottawa, Boston and New York since 2011 and, according to his website, the project is still ongoing.
Get up on this!
We're not the only creatures who celebrate their joy through dance. These arorable pups are groovin' to the beat of their own drum & making us all look stupid when we use the term "doggy style."
Did you know that when sea otters sleep, they hold hands in order not to drift apart? In this sense, they are sort of like lovers from the epid Titanic movie, starring our favorite young and handsome Leo Di Caprio.
