Realistic Tulle Portraits by Benjamin Shine
25 jan 2013 08:21
Tulle is that lightweight, very fine netting, commonly used for veils, wedding gowns and ballet tutus. British artist Benjamin Shine takes that tulle and proceeds to pleat, iron, and manipulate it into hauntingly realistic portraits that looks like photographs. By carefully folding and pleating the material in strategic places, Shine manages to create the lights, shadows, and tones needed to build the portrait. He then irons over it to keep them in place.

Scenic landscapes are layered behind the silhouettes of beautiful girls, creating a most eye-catching juxtaposition. Artist Choi Jeong Hwa has created two larger than life outdoor installations called Time After Time and Life-Life where he asked volunteers to help him cover up 16, dull gray pillars of the Southbank Centre with 7,000 green baskets and blow up 20,000 balloons (via pumps) to bring color and whimsy to trees. Recently, Alice Bartlett covered her fingernails with textured green flock and, from that moment, an idea was born. Classic Masterpiece Paintings Made of Shredded Magazines
25 jan 2013 09:44
It's always impressive when an artist can take one form of established art and transform it just enough to create something new and exciting. Artist Vik Muniz, who we've seen turn junkyard scraps into classic masterpieces, is one such artistic magician. In his latest series titled Pictures of Magazines 2, the New York-based Brazilian artist strips down issues of magazines, newspapers, volumes of books, and varied pop culture media, using their shredded pages to serve as brushstrokes for his "paintings" that, once again, recreate classic works of art.
