Immortal Jellyfish: The Only Known Species Known to Live Forever
06 feb 2013 17:48
While the humans have been looking for the elixir of life throughout every period of history, it appears that there is one species of jellyfish that are actually immortal. Turritopsis nutricula, or sometimes – Turritopsis dohrnii, is able to transform its cells from mature state back to immaturity, in other words – back to youth. The medusa leads a regular cycle of life, but after maturing and mating, it reverts back to its initial state – a polyp colony. The process is referred to as “transdifferentiation”, and it basically makes the jellyfish unable to die.

A beautiful woman twirls in front of the Eiffel Tower, decked out in a pale pink gown that makes her look like she stepped out of a fairytale. She smiles brightly and laughs as she gets her picture taken by Australian portrait photographer of the year Sue Bryce. But this is no ordinary fashion photo shoot. The "model," Jill Brzezinski-Conley, was diagnosed with breast cancer a day before her 32nd birthday, underwent a double mastectomy -- and now, at 35, has incurable stage-4 breast cancer which has metastasized to her bone.

Spectacular Three-Dimensional Polar Bear Sculpture
07 feb 2013 05:14
Valencia, Spain-based artist Luciana Novo reimagines the mounted head of an animal as a colorful spectacle on display. The plastic and clay wall-mounted sculpture known as Cabeza de oso polar, translated simply as Polar Bear Head, turns the typical hunter's trophy into an intriguing piece of art that raises many questions and provokes thoughts about these endangered animals. While a polar bear is not a beast that is typically pursued for game or otherwise, it is presented as a prize of sorts, mounted on an embellished headboard. Its multihued color palette adds an artistic touch to draw the eye, inviting viewers to take a look closer. Upon closer inspection, one notices the texture of the figure resembling that of hardened acrylic pigments. There's is a great painterly quality to the piece that takes a typical 2D image into a three-dimensional reality. While the artist's personal intention behind the piece is unclear, the sculpture is left open for discussion.

Meet the daughters of Mexico's nouveau riche
07 feb 2013 09:18
These nouveau riche ladies of Mexico - each one an apparently aspiring starlet - landed a walk-on part in artist Daniela Rossell's portraits. The Harem picture was shot in a location known as Villa Arabesque - and many of the 'models' are said to be friends and relatives of Rossell, who herself is the daughter of Mexico's political elite. Taken from the artist's 2002 book, 'Ricas y Famosas,' meaning 'Rich And Famous,' it is one of a number of photographs depicting Mexican society women living out their extravagant fantasies. In the preface to the book, a statement from the artist, herself Mexican, reads: 'The following images depict actual settings. The photographic subjects are representing themselves. Any resemblance with real events is not coincidental.' And anyone dipping into the glossy coffee table tome cannot fail to notice that it depicts a lifestyle a world away from the poverty prevalent in much of the country.

Up Helly Aa
07 feb 2013 10:03
In Lerwick, the capital of Scotland's Shetland Islands, a fire festival named Up Helly Aa is held every January to mark the end of the yule season. Local participants called guizers celebrate their Norse heritage, dressing in Viking gear and marching through town with battle axes and torches as they drag a ceremonial Viking longboat. At the end of the procession, the guizers hurl their torches onto the longboat and set it ablaze. After the flames die down, guizers sing the traditional song "The Norseman's Home" before a night of partying.

Intense Battle Scenes From Damascus
07 feb 2013 10:09
Reuters photographer Goran Tomasevic returned to Syria earlier this month, where he has been traveling the war-torn streets of Damascus with the Free Syrian Army. His past 24 hours were especially harrowing, as he accompanied an FSA group on an attack mission. Tomasevic captured the scene as one rebel was shot and killed in front of him by a government sniper. Just an hour later, he managed to keep taking photos as a tank shell slammed into a wall just above him and a group of fighters, sending chunks of plaster and concrete onto their heads. These images bring home with power and immediacy the frightening reality of Syria's urban warfare -- this all happened just yesterday -- but they offer just a few glimpses of this long, bloody uprising.
