New Hospital Playroom Shows Healing Power of Art and Play
28 feb 2013 08:19
One of the most inspiring art projects we've come across lately is this new playroom at the Royal London Hospital. To show the healing power of art and play, Cottrell and Vermeulen architects and designer Morag Myerscough all worked together to create this bright and fun space for the children's ward of the new hospital complex. "We wanted it to be a complete escape for the children," says architect Richard Cottrell. "Something so unexpected and all-consuming that it might distract them from thinking about being in hospital."

Comic book stained glass windows and a colorful skateboard ramp space? Last April, Paris' Palais de Tokyo reopened its doors after spending an astounding $26 million during 10 months of renovations. Now the largest contemporary art center in Europe, the museum has four levels and is as big as three soccer fields. With so much space, they've creatively let the building itself become part of the art. For 12 to 18 month stints, artists are invited to actually paint or construct their works right onto the building's windows, stairways and even signs.

Incredible Archives of a Nuclear Bomb Test Underwater
28 feb 2013 08:37
As part of a series of US nuclear weapon tests known as Operation Crossroads in 1946, a 23-kilotun nuke called Baker was blasted at about 90 feet underwater at Bikini Atoll and caused a tidal wave that reached over 2 miles high. The images that resulted from the test are breathtaking, both in the beautiful and terrifying sense. The vertical movement of such an immense body of water, shape-shifting from a dome to a mushroom cloud, is somewhat operatic. However, zooming in closer and seeing the naval ships being lifted by an unruly mass of nature like a few fragile toys is a frightening sight.

Vert-A-Pac: An Unusual Way to Transport Automobiles
28 feb 2013 09:49
Until the early 1960s, automobiles that were moved by rail were carried in boxcars. These were 50 feet long with double-wide doors. Inside were room for four full-sized sedans on a two-tier rack - two raised up off the floor on a steel rack and two others tucked in underneath them. This protected the cars during transport but wasn’t very efficient has the weight of four vehicles was far less than the maximum weight a boxcar that size could carry.
