Dito Von Tease
27 mar 2013 13:18

An Italian artist going by the name of Dito Von Tease has created “Ditology”, a project where portraits of famous people, real or fictional, are featured on human fingers. "Dito" translates to "finger” in Italian. It all started when Dito Von Tease, 33, was looking for an original avatar to use as his profile picture on Facebook. He chose a finger as a disguise because he was not keen on revealing his identity.

Young-Deok Seo
27 mar 2013 13:09

Korean artist Young-Deok Seo never ceases to amaze us with his skilled ability to turn ordinary bicycle chains into extraordinary figurative sculptures. Through his construction the artist continues to comment on man's disintegration into a mechanical universe by using a cold, hard material. Using the human form as his template, the accomplished sculptor mimics the intricate shape and curves of the human face, deep in thought, for his Meditation series.

Larry Kagan
27 mar 2013 12:57

New York-based artist Larry Kagan creates abstract wire sculptures that transform into recognizable figures when exposed to light from a precise angle. Similar to the likes of Diet Wiegman, Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Kagan's sculptures cast figurative shadows that draw the eye in amazement. Rather than focusing on the constructed steel structure, one's gaze is turned to the shadow drawings on the adjacent wall. Kagan explains, "We are more or less aware of the presence of shadows, since they tell us something about our environment, but we do not actually look at them – unless they call attention to themselves by some unfamiliar or unexpected behavior. My challenge was to induce viewers to actually look at the shadow rather than solely at the steel. I began shifting more of the narrative burden to shadow. The more content the eyes could detect in the shadow, the more time and attention they would expend on exploring its details…"

Artist Tang Yau Hoong

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia-based illustrator Tang Yau Hoong has just released a brand new series where he pairs one of his illustrations with a famous quote. A few years ago, we discovered Hoong and we quickly became fans after we saw his ability to cleverly incorporate negative space into many of his works. As he told us then, "I enjoy making illusion art because it has the ability to mislead us. We rely on sight in our lives and yet it is so fragile that we could easily be deceived by what we see."

Sculptor Lorenzo Quinn playfully designs disembodied hands playing with life-size toys. The artist's public installation titled Esto no es un juego, or This is not a game, is especially interesting in its declaration juxtaposed with a pair of hands holding onto what appear to be plastic toys. Like the set of a child's imagination gone wild at playtime, the display is adorned with classic green army men holding varying stances. It is simultaneously playful and powerful, sending a message about the seriousness of war that is made light of through toys.

Dali portrait charcoal drawing
26 mar 2013 12:35

Spanish artist Emilio Ferrari creates extreme, hyper realistic drawings with just paper and some pencils. Every drawing has photographic qualities within the details, and it can take the self-taught artist up to two weeks to complete one of his visually complex creations. In contrast with the realistic accuracy of each piece, Ferrari includes a touch of surrealism in his illustrations. For example, a wide-eyed man's mustache grows unexpectedly upward and a scared young man has unnaturally perfect drops of blood trickling from his nose.

Colosso dell'Appennino
26 mar 2013 11:03

Shrouded within the park of Villa Demidoff (just north of Florence, Italy), there sits a gigantic 16th century sculpture known as Colosso dell'Appennino, or the Appennine Colossus. The brooding structure was first erected in 1580 by Italian sculptor Giambologna. Like a guardian of the pond in front of him, the giant is in an endless watchful pose, perched atop his earthy seat.

Artist Diet Wiegman manages to sculpt mounds of irregularly shaped structures that are transformed into an intricately detailed silhouette when a light shines on it from a precise angle. Similar to the light and shadow sculptures of artistic duo Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Wiegman leaves audiences in awe with his puzzling ability to cast remarkably figurative shadows from heaps of seemingly abstract sculptures.

Serge Birault aka Papaninja

Make no mistake, there are some really talented artists and illustrators out there creating really beautiful works of art. Serge Birault, aka PapaNinja isn’t one of them. He’s on a whole new level all by himself. He’s the mastermind behind this collection of jaw-dropping 2D Pin-Up’s. Rarely have such beauty, creativity and skill all come together in such perfect harmony. Regardless of the subject matter (which hey I’m a fan of obviously!) they are simply stunning works of art. I’m sure Dita Von Teese would certainly approve! I’d totally have them all over the walls in my house – wouldn’t you? Phenomenal.

"Lab"

“Lab” is a life-size model of a human skeleton and organs that was painstakingly crocheted by artist Shanell Papp. The Canadian artist spent 8 months crafting the sculpture by hand back in 2006. In the pursuit of realism, she used an actual human skeleton and anatomy textbooks as references. The sculpture even includes unseen details like bone marrow and half-digested food in the stomach. Um... kinda gross.

Remember when you first saw Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” - the scene where he leaned forward at that impossible angle and you took your breath away? Well you’re on the right track, when it comes to the new video from Japanese group World Order (who are comprised of 7 dudes) and titled “We Are All” Basically, it’s the coolest thing you’ve about to watch on the internet all week. To dance the way they do, to have such flawless timing would take literally hours and hours and hours of rehearsals – but sheesh it’s worth it. The entire music video looks laden with special FX and time-lapse trickery – but the whole thing is done in real time, in the middle of every day life in Japan. It is quite simply…phenonmenal.
