Life without Pain
27 nov 2012 00:57

Amazing girl named Ashlyn Blocker lives in the U.S. city of Patterson. She is an ordinary-looking 13-year-old child, going to school, studying music, but there is one thing. She does not feel any pain and does not even know how to describe it. She could easily shove her hand in boiling water and see how the skin is covered with blisters. She can feel warmth and coolness, but not the more extreme temperatures that would cause anyone else to recoil in pain. At school, she was once asked if she was Superman. There was the time she broke her ankle and ran around on it for two days before her parents realized something was wrong.

Abandoned Resort
27 nov 2012 00:53

In the early 1970’s, the Varosha quarter in Famagusta, Cyprus was one of the Mediterranean’s most popular and glamorous tourist destinations. The bright blue waters and beautiful sandy beaches were draws for such stars as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Raquel Welch, and Brigitte Bardot. Population of the area grew to about 39,000 people, but by the end of 1974 the town would be conquered by Turkish troops, fenced off completely, and have a population of zero. Today the former millionaire’s playground resort still stands vacant and fenced off, guarded by Turkish soldiers and doubtful to open anytime soon.

Unique and Very Dangerous Tree
27 nov 2012 00:50

Watch out for falling cannonballs. What you are about to see is a cannonball tree. They only grow in the Caribbean and if you are hit by one of its falling cannon balls you can die. Couroupita guianensis, whose common names include Ayahuma and the Cannonball Tree, is an evergreen tree allied to the Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa), and is native to tropical northern South America and to the southern Caribbean. In India it has been growing for the past two or three thousand years at least, as attested by textual records hence it is possible that it is native to India also. It’s rare, but also found in Bangladesh. Take a look. Enjoy.

Children in Indonesia are risking their lives everyday just to get to school. They use an aqueduct, suspended hundreds of metres above the ground as a shortcut, even though it was not built for people to walk on. It is meant to transport water, but the wooden structure links Suro Village and Plempungan Village in Java.

Dayton Webber’s life didn’t start out easy. Dayton’s limbs were amputated when he was 11 months old because of a life-threatening bacterial infection. Now he’s 11 years old, living in Charles County Maryland, and he’s wrestling, playing football, go-karting or ice skating, and riding scooters. But Dayton doesn’t just participate in sports, he competes. In his own words, “I just like to do sports, I feel like I can play sports and kind of show people what I can do — that I can do sports just as good as them. I feel like I can do anything if I just put my mind to it.” Dayton is a true testament to the indomitable nature of the human spirit. Cheers to you, buddy.

Everyday Individuals Transformed Into Astronauts | So Bad So Good
26 nov 2012 17:23
What did you want to be when you were growing up? The chances are, that for a split second or maybe even for a day, you wanted to become an astronaut. There’s something quite aspirational about wanting a job that involves you actually leaving planet Earth in search of the unknown don’t you think? Graziano Panfili is an Italian photographer who’s exploring that trait of unfulfilled dreams in his latest series titled ‘Alienation’. He effortlessly captures these quite magnificent portraits of every day individuals, and in doing so highlights a common (if little spoken) admission, that many of us are still waiting for a our dreams to take off - just like the astronauts in his stunning photographs. What did you want to be when you grow up? I still want to be a doctor =]

Kooky Bathroom Portraits Of Japanese Nightclubbers | So Bad So Good

Japanese photographer Hal constantly found it hard to get a good shot in amongst the strobe lights and dark corners of Tokyo’s underground dance venues – so instead he went to the subjects houses after their night out and took the shots in the own personal bathrooms. The resulting photos most certainly kooky but you have to admit, it looks like everyone was having a blast. Just another night out in crazy madness that is Tokyo.

These Photos Will Make You Question Who You Are

Does being symmetrical make someone more attractive? According to the media and peer reviewed science, yes it does. Well, Julian Wolkenstein has taken on the challenge of answering this question in his remarkable new photographic series. “Part of my project has been to de-bunk the myth that symmetrical people are therefore better looking. Some of the symmetrical images don’t look attractive at all.” Hmm.......decide for yourself. Try and see if you can find the original and the photo shopped one. what do you think? Yay, or nay?

Kickin' it with the Astronauts.
26 nov 2012 16:48
Ben Cooper literally gets to kick it with the homies from space! He’s allowed to go onto the flight deck of some of the most famous spacecraft in the world and capture the labyrinthine, buttons, dials & switches astronauts have to adjust whilst floating high above our planet. There’s a myriad of options and possibilities when it comes to commanding and flying one of these ships – but to get a rare glimpse inside the inner workings of such spacecraft such as the Atlantis, Discovery and of course the Endeavour is truly remarkable. Imagine the most complex controls you’ve even seen for a video game or flight simulator and multiply that by a thousand. Thankfully Ben has made prints of his work available for purchase, so you can now compliment any posters you have of spacecraft with a detailed and genuine look at their inner workings as well.
