Arno Raffael Minkkinen, a photographer based on the East Coast in the U.S., has spent the last 40 years creating surreal self-portrait photos in which his nude body becomes an element of the landscapes that surround him. What’s even more striking about his extraordinary compositions is that they are all real, which is impressive given that some of his photos have him lying in or even under the snow.

Welcome to the weird and wonderful surrealistic universe of Mothmeister, called Wounderland. As passionate taxidermy collectors we reincarnate dead critters into fairy tale figures. We portray them accompanied by anonymous, lonesome characters.

Matthias Jung creates his personal dream houses. He has been creating collages since he was a child. First with glue and scissors, then later in his father‘s photo laboratory, and now digitally. He is not interested in creating perfect Photoshop worlds. What‘s important to him is revealing inner realities.

Chris Bennett originally trained and worked in mechanical engineering and then went to art school and studied graphic design. After all that he worked in various advertising agencies in Britain and Germany. Then he gave up his job! He found himself in a remote and beautiful part of the world, German Alps, where he still lives. He became a “house husband” with loads of spare time. Therefore, he decided to create his own pictures in Photoshop.

Is man battling nature or himself? In these fascinating new paintings by artist Joel Rea, we see man and a tiger going one-on-one with the fury of nature. Using oil on canvas, Rea makes his paintings come alive by showing waves furiously crashing and rocks shockingly crumbling. One has to wonder who has ultimate control in this world. In Resolution, above, we see a man holding a briefcase in one hand and a piece of paper in the other, while a giant wave is about to crash upon him. Solemn or...

Can you imagine life without animals? They are not only our best friends, but what is more important that they are the necessary element of global nature balance. Without them we couldn’t exist. It’s very sad that our activities around the world make their lives so complicated, hard and dangerous. We have to do all we can to repair everything what we have destroyed. n these images, the author decided to use animals as the main characters. They are so much better than humans.

Los Angeles-based photographer Brooke Shaden crafts hauntingly-beautiful works that seem to live in their own world. As we’ve seen before, she’s no stranger to composing dark-yet-hopeful images of women in surreal settings. People shine and objects levitate in outdoor landscapes whose dreamy coloring evokes a painterly quality to the work. It’s clear that a lot of care and consideration was given to every part of the surrounding environment, and we see small-yet-fantastic details like a...

Surreal Floating Room Sculptures by Leandro Erlich
Helen
02 sep 2013 11:42

Like a scene from a fantasy movie, a dilapidated room that appears to have been literally ripped out of a building remains suspended in mid air above Nantes, France. Its walls were torn apart, revealing bricks below the plaster, and wood floors reveal the joists inside. The floating room is accessible via a ladder. The gravity defying surreal installation is the work of Argentinean artist Leandro Erlich. The large-scale piece, called “Monte-meubles – L’ultime déménagement” (literally - The...
