25 years ago, the 90’s were upon us: Gameboys, Seinfeld, Nirvana and a beauty ideal that is very different from the curvaceous, big booty babes of today. Take a look at Scarlett Johansson, for example, and compare her with the women who embodied beauty in the 90s, like supermodel Kate Moss. The beauty standard in the 90s was a thinness that was borderline skeletal, but bodies of the today celebs wouldn’t have been as trendy, attractive as they are now.
10. Amber Rose
It’s hard to say what kind of career Amber Rose, a model, would have had in the 90s. Her animated-like body, with her ample backside and bosom that look as though they were drawn by a cartoonist, just would not have been the ideal beauty standard at the time – not by a long shot. She probably would have got some looks. But it also begs the question: would Kanye still have been attracted to her at a time when curvy wasn’t in? Maybe, but maybe not. If we argue that her relationship with Kanye West propelled her to fame, as some do, is it possible that Amber Rose wouldn’t even be a celebrity? It’s possible.
9. Christina Hendricks
Mad Men’s Joan Holloway, played by Christina Hendricks, has a lot of people drooling over her. Although Hendricks has simultaneously been at the end a lot of body shaming due to her more voluptuous figure, there are a lot of people out there who love it. Esquire called her “The Sexiest Woman in the World,” as well as the “Best Looking American Woman.” Her cultural reach has been so defining that some called her the “new modern ideal of Hollywood glamour—full figured, voluptuous; a throwback to the days of Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell and Veronica Lake.” Nevertheless, although her award-winning acting abilities would certainly stand the test of the time, it is likely that she wouldn’t meet the ideal 90s beauty standard of the ever-thin Kate Moss and wouldn’t be as “hot” as she is today.
8. Nicki Minaj
The hot or not status of Nicki Minaj is much debated, but there is definitely a camp out there who loves her animated look. But such would likely not have been the case 25 years ago. Nobody would have been talking about Nicki Minaj’s giant booty back in the 90s. In fact, throughout most of history, smaller bottoms have mostly been everyone’s cup of tea, so Minaj definitely wouldn’t have been at the forefront of the big booty trend like she is today. But, luckily for Minaj, she isn’t necessarily known for her looks like other celebrities out there, so chances are that she would still hold the title of one of the most “influential female rappers of all time,” even 25 years ago.
7. Jessica Biel
In the 90s, we all knew Jessica Biel as little miss Mary Camden, on 7th Heaven, who was just a teen at the time. Nevertheless, if you were to pluck Jessica Biel, as she is now, and put her into the 90’s, a lot of people probably wouldn’t find her as attractive as they do today. She continues to make “top sexiest women lists,’ but her athletic body and muscle tone wouldn’t have been something that many were replicating back in the 90’s. That being said, Biel would have been smokin’ in the 80’s when the fitness craze was rampant.
6. Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe was the ultimate sex symbol of the 50s and if she were alive today, it is almost with 100% certainty that she would still hold that title with her curves and basically perfect proportions (except for the fact that she would be 90 years old). But 25 years ago? She probably would have been told to go on a diet, considering the beauty standard at the time was go small or go home. Can anyone even imagine Monroe without her famous curves? Of course, all of this relies on the assumption that Marilyn Monroe is basically frozen in time, plucked from one era and put into another one.
5. Beyonce
Beyonce has amassed many titles due to her looks alone, including “World’s Most Beautiful Woman.” A lot of her beauty comes from her body and particularly her irresistible curves, but that wouldn’t have been the case back in the early 90s. Curves just weren’t in back then like they are right now. But Beyonce has a lot more going for her than her curves – she has been considered one of the most influential people in the world (Time magazine) and one of the most powerful female musicians (Forbes), among other titles. It is safe to say that these, arguably more important titles, would still be true 25 years ago. Bootylicious also would be nowhere to be found in the dictionary.
4. Gigi Hadid
Up and coming “It Girl,” Gigi Hadid, a model, is quite clearly genetically blessed when it comes to that face of hers. But is it likely that Hadid wouldn’t be as hot as she is today with her very non-traditional model body? Would she have walked some of the biggest runways? Probably not. Hadid has even said herself that “’No, I don’t think I have the same body type as the other models in shows” and that she “came at a time where the fashion industry was ready for a change.” If she gets a lot of hate for her body in a time when curvy bodies are on trend, she likely wouldn’t have been able to fit in with the likes of the ever-skinny Kate Moss in the 90s. Not that it’s a bad thing.
3. Kate Upton
Kate Upton was all the rage for a few years due to her blonde bombshell good looks and, for lack of a better word, goodies in all the right places, if you catch our drift. But her more voluptuous figure, which is part of her brand and her appeal, wouldn’t have been as desirable – at least by media’s standards – as it is today. Thank the Gods that Upton was born when she was – not only because we can drool over her body, but also because she has been a part of ushering in a new standard of beauty. On this topic, Upton said: “If I can help and influence girls who are going through body-image issues, then I think that’s amazing.”
2. Scarlett Johansson
You can’t go a day without hearing how hot Scarlett Johansson is. Part of her appeal, which has propelled her to her “sex symbol” status, is undeniably her figure – a bod that everyone is after these days. It is certainly hard to think of a time when Scarlett Johansson wouldn’t have been as hot as she is now, but her appeal be as great 25 years ago as it is today. Maybe Johansson would think she’s still hot, though, given that she was once quoted as saying, “I’m not anxious to starve myself. For me, it’s not at all sexy to be ultra-thin.”
1. Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian wouldn’t have been as hot in the 90s as she is today. Considering that she has made a career out of her looks and derriere, her career probably wouldn’t be where it is today, either. Kardashian has brought the Marilyn Monroe curves back in style, but the 90s waif look would have been out of reach for Kardashian. She is basically the opposite of supermodel Kate Moss, whose thin frame was considered to be beautiful at the time. Some also argue that she looks a little plastic and although plastic surgery continued to grow in the 90s, it wasn’t as common as it is today. It’s safe to say there wouldn’t be a bunch of Kardashian knockoffs running around today.
