Korean photographer Ahn Jun's Self-Portrait project features the dainty photographer on the ledge of some dangerously imposing buildings. We've seen our fair share of daredevils dangling off the ledge of towering structures, but there's something darker about Ahn's photography. The series appears to be a reflection of urban life from the somber perspective of an isolated girl amidst a jungle of concrete buildings.

The concept, developed by Farrow Partnership Architects, is designed to blend naturally into the surrounding land and to overlook the Georgian Bay.

Surreal Streets is a series by French photographer Julie de Waroquier that explores the way the modern dreamer's private aspirations merge with the unforgiving reality of public streets. Anonymity becomes more and more a distant part of history with each passing day as people are expected to share themselves and their goals on public grounds. The photographer says, "In our society, our private and personal identities are built in public spaces, especially in the streets, theatres of our lives… I [want] to show how someone can build his/her inner identity in a world in which almost everything is public."

In this series entitled Nuées (Clouds), French photographer and visual artist Laurent Millet took the clouds right out of the sky and put them on display in glass boxes—or so it appears. Using perspective and a creative mind, the artist photographed his own hand, holding up three dimensional glass boxes that appear to contain the fluffy white puffs.

Using her own resin and non-toxic phosphorescence concoction, artist Miya Ando has coated 1,000 leaves and set them afloat in a pond in Puerto Rico. We've seen bioluminescent bodies of water radiating a brilliant sapphire hue against the night sky in the past, but Ando takes this natural occurrence and manually transfers the luminous beauty of bioluminescence in her public art project titled Obon [Puerto Rico]. During the day, the leaves' layered skin absorbs sunlight energy, which translates at night into a gorgeous path of drifting blue lights.

Amblypygi is an order of invertebrate animals belonging to the class Arachnida, in the subphylum Chelicerata of the phylum Arthropoda. They form a separate order of arachnids alongside the spiders, scorpions and others. Native to New Zealand and Australasia. Amblypygids are also known as whip spiders and tailless whip scorpions (not to be confused with whip scorpions that belong to the Arachnid order Thelyphonida). The name "amblypygid" means "blunt rump", a reference to a lack of the telson ("tail") carried by related species. Despite an offputting appearance, they are harmless to humans.

The 2013 Dakar Rally off-road race started in Lima, Peru on January 5th. More than four hundred racers in four classes of vehicles will race 5,200 miles to Santiago, Chile. This is the fifth year that the event has taken place in South America after security threats forced the cancellation of the original race that had run from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal since 1978. Burning Man is a week-long annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in the United States. The event begins on the last Monday in August, and ends on the first Monday in September, which coincides with the American Labor Day holiday. The 2012 Burning Man Festival took place between August 27 and September 3. It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy on Saturday evening. The event is described by many participants as an experiment in community, art, radical self-expression, and radicalself-reliance.^[1][2][3][4] Burning Man is organized by Black Rock City, LLC. In 2010, 51,515 people attended Burning Man.^[5] 2011 attendance was capped at 50,000 participants and the event sold out^[6] on July 24. In April 2011, Larry Harvey announced that the organization had begun the process of transitioning management of the festival over to a new non-profit called the "Burning Man Project".

 

 

These colorful, blobby creatures, called Flossis, are taking over Germany! Designed by artist Rosalie, the installation of playful figures can be seen climbing the exterior walls of many buildings in Düsseldorf, Germany, including The Roggendorf House. The decorative figures add a fun element along The Rhine, as viewers observe the invasion of the human-like forms who fearlessly climb the walls with their suction cup hands and feet. Upon reaching the top of the building, the happy clan of sculptures are placed standing or sitting, with legs hanging over the edge of the roof, happily waving down to the audience of passers-by below.

If you happen to live in Ann Arbor, you may already be familiar with a sweet little resident there that seems to randomly pop up on the streets. His name is Sluggo and he's the work of David Zinn, an artist that just so happens to love placing Sluggo in some highly imaginative scenes. The happy green fellow has appeared on sidewalks, walls and ledges since 2008, "originally as a chalk drawing of a child that took a strange turn," Zinn writes on Behance. "He has since developed a widespread reputation as a semi-subterranean jack of few trades with flexible personal architecture and a fondness for flying pigs." Sluggo even has own Tumblr blog called Sluggo on the Street. I think I just fell in love.

German-based photographer Phillip Schumacher has an extreme talent for creating enchanting, surreal scenes filled with creativity and imagination. His love for the universe is quite apparent in this series, entitled Cosmic Love. Each image is a mystical self-portrait in which he canoodles with tiny planets that are photoshopped into his arms. Schumacher says it's as simple as this: "I just like the idea of transforming my room into space."

If the late, great comedian Rodney Dangerfield was still around, he might say that bugs "don't get no respect!" After all, humans are usually honored with a funeral when they pass away. Minneapolis-based Carmichael Collective decided to buck that trend and came up with these silly yet sad set called Bug Memorials. Little shrines dedicated to the fallen flies or roaches have been set up next to the place where they have deceased, such as a sidewalk or windowsill. Now, they can truly rest in peace.

What is it about eyes that are so fascinating? Regardless of the medium they're depicted in, whether it be a drawing, painting, or photo, these tiny orbs that give us the gift of sight also, ironically, provide a feast for the eyes. When executed properly, eyes in art can evoke emotions and provide inspiration. It is especially stimulating to see the works of brilliant artists like Jasper Branse and Brian Schmalzriedt who are able to produce such captivating, hyperrealistic renditions of these supposed windows to the soul with a few simple tools—pencils, erasers, tissues, charcoal, and a lot of skill.

Let’s face it: as a species, we’ve ruined nature. We’ve melted the ice caps with our spray-on deodorant; turned the rainforests into barren sludge; and even taken the atom—the building block of the universe—and turned it into a weapon. But nature still seems to love us. This can be shown by the incredible number of ways dogs can help us, with their amazing sense of smell.
