“These portraits depict kids as agents of change. There's no more powerful fuel on the planet than a kid's imagination,” art & creative director Thomas Ollivier states on his website. Thomas Ollivier joined forces with photographer Jørn Tomter in the photography project “Cosmo Kids” to honor children around the world by turning them into great astronauts that proudly represent their countries.
Children from 14 different countries aged 5 to 7 years old were invited to participate in this project that took two years to develop. All of these children are students of Kingsmead Primary School in Hackney, London, which has gathered students and their families from over 50 countries around the world. Over 40 different languages are spoken in this school that has become a symbol of multiculturalism, equality and beautiful diversity.
“It was great to see how much enthusiasm and curiosity they had about space exploration. We are looking for exhibitions and museums to showcase the project. I wanted to high jack an iconic image that we all have in our subconscious and use it to depict a different reality,” Ollivier told Bored Panda.
The project and its impactful message didn’t go unnoticed. A portrait of Wunnam – The Ghanaian Astronaut has won the Portrait of Humanity Award and will be taken on a worldwide tour to renowned museums, galleries, and international photography festivals.
This beautiful project goes way above exquisite costume designs and thought-out photo shoots. It shows that kids are capable of pursuing their dreams no matter who they are and where they are from.
