Loved ones from above ground can show you that you are still in their thoughts by adding songs to your playlist online. I suppose even classics like “Bury Me in Smoke” or “Knocking On Heaven’s Door” get old after an eternity underground, though!
On January 13, 2013, the National Geographic Society will celebrate its 125th anniversary and its evolution from a small scientific body to one of the world's largest educational and scientific organizations committed to inspiring people to care about the planet. The Society has shared some images that represent those moments of discovery and will continue in its 126th year, to provide a front-row seat to what's happening at the extremes of exploration - bringing everyone along for the ride through its storytelling and photography.
For some, fashion is a corporate industry. For others, it's an artistic expression. And for still others, it's an embrace of cultural traditions. Fashion is a shallow pursuit in the eyes of many, and a deep embodiment of identity for others. Definitions of what is fashionable are myriad and contradictory, but the annual spectacle of the presentation and the scramble of the preparations endure long after this year's look is forgotten.
So you think you love chocolate. What about a chocolate covered onion? Would you eat chocolate covered bugs as a snack? Or what about bacon? I know I would. ;)
If you ever see some wild animal tracks in the cities like New York, Boston or Ottawa – don’t panic! It doesn’t mean that animals have broken out of the zoo. In his newest project “Outliers (Trace)”, talented Canadian artist Maskull Lasserre has designed a collection of shoes that leave realistic footprints of moose, deer, Kodiak bears, rabbits and other animals. Lasserre has been using them to leave animal tracks in Ottawa, Boston and New York since 2011 and, according to his website, the project is still ongoing.
Bob Maynard once said that “Problems are opportunities in disguise.” And this is exactly what happened to Kayleigh O’Conno, a 24-year-old media student at Birmingham City University (UK), who had a habit of finger biting. “I started glueing on false nails when I was around 16/17 (because I bit my own so badly that they looked like something out of a horror film – and not in a good way). After a while I started painting designs on them so they didn’t look so boring, and then it went a bit crazy, with different shapes sizes and all that… Now I mainly make them for fun and like to change them a few times a week I never used to take pictures of my nails until people started telling me I should (and, I found out that if I kept some sort of blog somewhere, I’d get a better mark for one of my old Uni assignments ). So, that’s why I’ve started keeping pictures of them before they get lost or broken (which is usually what happens).”
Doel is a 700 year old village situated near the river Scheldt in Belgium, that is currently facing the threat of demolition. Its only crime is that it’s located too close to the port of Antwerp. Somewhere in the 1970's it was decided that the Antwerp harbour needed to expand, and Doel quickly became a target for demolition. The construction of a large dock and container terminal capable of receiving deep-sea ships is already underway on a site immediately next to the village, and the Port Authority proposes building a second one where the village now stands.
