Lumio: Portable Light Disguised As A Book
01 mar 2013 07:34
Stephen King once said that books are a uniquely portable magic. Industrial designer Max Gunawan materializes the thought quite literally as he disguises a portable light into a hard-bound book. It is called Lumio and at the first glance it really does look like an ordinary book. But when you open it up, it lights up transforming itself into a modern light.

He may look like he’s about to enjoy a G&T at his club but this smartly dressed city type is street accordion player Stephen Rimmer. The 45-year-old was spotted playing in Manchester and given a regular gig on the Key 103 radio station. Having spent four years squatting, he has been transformed thanks to a haircut and new suit. ‘I’ll be on the show for as long as they will have me,’ said Mr Rimmer, who is now known as ‘Squatter Steve’ by listeners.

Embryonic Superheroes - Where Cute Meets Creepy
28 feb 2013 11:11
Just when I thought I couldn’t be weirded out by anything I find on the internet, here’s a series of sculptures titled “Embryonic Superheroes” to accomplish that feat. There’s a whole galley of these, and they have heroes from Spider-Man to Silver Surfer to The Thing, and a few invisible translucent ones that I can’t quite place. Is one the Invisible Woman? What about the one with wings? Some comic pro can fill me in here. The photos were taken by Jalal Gerald Aro, but the sculptor remains unknown.

Wat Rong Khun: A Buddhist Temple Inspired by Sci-Fi Movies
26 feb 2013 08:28
Wat Rong Khun, more well-known among foreigners as the White Temple, is an unconventional Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Designed in 1997 by noted Thai painter-turned-architect Chalermchai Kositpipat, this magnificent temple is a bizarre blend of traditional Thai architecture and the surreal. The main building is painted white to symbolise Buddha’s purity, and is covered in mosaics of mirrors, sparkling in the sun. All around the complex are intricate sculptures of demons, skulls, severed heads handing from trees and other bizarre objects.

Slaughterhouse Starlets is an illustrated series by designer Keith P. Rein. The illustrator's set of images, of which there are only six so far, feature a violent version of some of today's leading ladies; including Emma Stone, Zooey Deschanel and Emma Watson. Each femme fatale is equipped with a different deadly weapon and it looks like they've already taken the liberty of using them as each frame appears to be splattered with bloodstains. From wielding a hatchet and toting a battle axe to revving up a chainsaw and getting hands on with a pair of brass knuckles, these ladies are prepared for a zombie apocalypse and ready to fend for themselves.

What 200 Calories Look Like in Different Foods
25 feb 2013 05:07
WiseGEEK conducted a very visual and informative study and presented a photo series, which compares what 200 calories actually look like in different foods. You’d think that even with the bikini season coming up, a handful of gummy bears couldn’t hurt much, right..? Well, turns out, just 51 gram of those gives you the same amount of calories as nearly 600 grams of broccoli or 3 whole eggs would. And now be honest – which of those amounts sounds more alike a proper and filling meal to you? The study compares 71 different foods, and is originally organized going from low to high calorie density. You can really tell how the quantities are getting smaller towards the end of the list! Statistically an average adult needs 2000-2500 calories a day, but this, of course, differs depending on how physically active you are. So for those who don’t hesitate to sweat in the gym, a spoonful of peanut butter is a lot less of a sin!
