Things From Space
18 aug 2013 09:40
Arroyo Grande, California-based artist Mark Bryan has created a surreal collection of sci-fi themed oil paintings titled Things From Space. The paintings portray a futuristic vision of Earth that is under attack by monstrous alien robots and UFOs. In a few of his pieces, Mark mixes in pop culture icons who are either helping to protect us (Mona Lisa) or are one of the many helpless victims (Bambi). Prints are available to purchase online via Mark’s Imagekind store.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII - Palpatine Returns
17 aug 2013 21:52
So Disney and Lucasfilm ended up giving us nothing about Star Wars: Episode VII at their D23 Expo this last weekend, and it left many fans including myself unfulfilled and disappointed. But today we bring you some cool news regarding the highly anticipated film! There's a rumor been floating around that Emperor Palpatine would be back and that Ian McDiarmid would be returning to play him. That news has now been confirmed by our friends at Latino-Review, who also give us some spoilerish details on how he will return because as you know, he was murdered by Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. I've been seeing people talking about the character being cloned, but that just didn't really make sense to me. It never even really made sense to me in the comics either. As site points out, why would the clone be an old Emperor? The whole thing made me think that their was no real truth behind the rumor, which is why I never posted anything about it. Everything has now clicked into place, though!

Excited to hear a cool story to go with the awesome art.

Michelle Obama is Releasing a Hip-Hop Album
17 aug 2013 21:10
Since President Obama took office, First Lady Michelle Obama has made childhood obesity, nutrition and healthy eating her top priorities. Now it seems this crusade has reached a new level, because Mrs. Obama is releasing a hip-hop album... about diet and exercise. No, this is not a joke and no, it unfortunately doesn't include ANY Gucci Mane covers. It does include guest features from the likes of Reverend Run of Run DMC, Travis Barker, Jordin Sparks, Ashanti (hell yea girl, I see you), and Dr. Oz. Damn, she got Dr. Oz on this?! Shit is gonna be BANGING.

In the music world, songs get passed around like a hot potato. Demo songs are sent to one artist, turned down, and recorded by another. Tracks bend gender rules, with Aerosmith snatching a power ballad from Celine Dion and Chris Brown handing over one of his tunes to Rihanna. Here are just 11 of the many songs that made it big after being turned down by other singers.

Stylish Animals That Dress Better Than You
16 aug 2013 13:58
Madrid-based advertising and industrial photographer Miguel Vallinas presents his whimsical photo series, titled “Second Skins”, where various animals take up a role that’s completely new to them. Dressed in fashionable clothes, each of them poses as a typical human model would, and it appears the their outfits match their personalities as a true second skin. Vallinas photographed over 50 animals, picking them outfits that of different styles and even decades. A swan looks like a studious girl, whereas a flamingo becomes a sharp NYC business lady – and check that stylish jacket that the donkey wears! Detailed retouching makes the outfit and the pose of the animals come together into a very coherent look. The series is a sister project of the “Pieles” photo sequence, where the Vallinas photographed himself dressed up in different professions. You might also remember another Spanish photographer, Barcelona-based Yago Partal and his “Zoo Portrait” series. What is it with the Spaniards and their love to dress their animals up?

20 Historic Black and White Pictures Restored in Color
16 aug 2013 13:53

Most often the color palette that we associate with history is limited to black and white only. But have you ever imagined what did people, their outfits and backgrounds looked like in real life – in color? Members of this one group on reddit, called r/ColorizedHistory, sure have: they pick historic photos that we have only seen in black and white, and bring them back to life by digitally coloring them. Of course, some interpretation and imagination is used in the process, but all of the artists try to work with as much historical accuracy as possible. Even though the idea looks simple, the final image has a surprisingly touching effect: by seeing those historic moments in color, we can relate to them easier, and this makes the pictures a whole lot more powerful. Instead of seeing those photos like we’re used to in history books, we now meet people that seem a lot more real, and situations – war scenes, for example – that look as if they have just happened. It’s nice to see that the community of history fans is growing, and that people want to make it relevant to others. However, this has also sparked some discussion, as some say that the artists are just messing with historic facts and misinforming people. So, view it critically. For more old photographs restored in color, check out the works of Sanna Dullaway and redditor mygrapefruit from Sweden.

Creatively Blurring the Line Between Ice Cream and Flowers
16 aug 2013 13:49
A few months ago, photographer Parker Fitzgerald was honored with the task of shooting the cover for Kinfolk Magazine. The issue focused on the coming of spring and, in light of that theme, Fitzgerald created this series of Ice Cream and Flowers. Piled high on top of ice cream cones, the gorgeous displays of flowers look good enough to eat! (Although please note Fitzgerald's cautionary P.S.: Don’t eat hydrangeas with, on, or instead of ice cream. They look pretty but are mildly poisonous. You’ve been warned!)

Funny Photos of People Caught Sleeping in Libraries
16 aug 2013 13:46
Flickr user George Oates has curated an aptly titled gallery on the photo sharing website called People Sleeping in Libraries. The collection presents one hilarious image after the next of exactly what you'd expect—unknowing library-goers caught snoozing on the various couches and desks of book havens, surrounded by walls full of volumes of published text. One could easily infer that these slumbering students and power napping persons have fallen prey to the Sandman while studying hard or simply being on their feet for too long. Whatever their reasons are for taking a break from consciousness, it's certainly a state of weariness that most can relate to. Who wouldn't want the option to hit the snooze button and escape into dreamland on a comfy chair in a quiet library?

Delicious Sugary Treats Perfectly Organized by Color
15 aug 2013 13:58
Austin-based photographer Emily Blincoe seems to have quite the sweet tooth. For her Sugar Series, she collected a wide range of color-specific candies, arranged them in deliciously symmetrical squares, and then photographed the organized compositions. She included every candy one can imagine, including lollipops, bubble gum, all kinds of fruit chews, hard candy sticks, taffy, gummy bears, PEZ, and even little heart-shaped piles of nerds. Each photograph features a slew of candies set against a solid, color coordinated background. Blincoe features the full rainbow—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple—as well as black, gold, and white. The light is exactly the same in every photograph, shining in from the left and casting shadows off to the right, which adds a bit of depth to the arrangements. Viewers can't help but wonder if, at the conclusion of the project, Blincoe enjoyed a little feast of sugary treats!

Awesome Moments

While I hate to use the word "precious" when describing anything related to children, there's just no other way to describe these illustrations by Pascal Campion. The San Francisco-based illustrator and animator makes us stop and appreciate the fleeting moments in life - the kind that pass us by in the blink of an eye. As a first time mom, these illustrations seem to take on a whole new meaning. You can tell that this French-American illustrator finds inspiration in his own family life. As he says on his website, "Sometimes it’s being at the supermarket or giving a bath to my daughter and she looks at me and smiles. It lasts for a second, but the memory of it stays with me for a long time. These are the things that interest me the most."

Guy Gets Hit in the Nuts 10 Times for $25

It takes balls to pull off this stunt. It takes no balls to finish it. In this video, a guy bets another feller $25 that he won’t flinch while he kicks him in the ‘nads 10 times. It’s the kind of dare even the guys from ‘Jackass’ may deem too ridiculous. If the guy really wanted to be bold, he should’ve put down a sawbuck on the fact he’d be a falsetto by the end of this video.

These Photos Look Kinda Fishy
14 aug 2013 12:58
What do most people do with fish they bring home from the market? If you’re normal you’d probably gut it and eat. (Actually if you’re really normal you buy that stuff pre-cut so you don’t ever have to look at their cold dead eyes staring back at you.) If you’re… not so normal like Paris based artist Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard, you might make a weird-ass photo series of fish working on assembly lines or in laboratories. The series is called “Les Temps Modernes” (Modern Times in English) probably because in these modern times no one’s going to question your sanity for doing something like dressing up little fishies and taking pictures of them.

The Internet Is Going To Explode: Cat Donuts

I don’t need to explain the Internet’s obsession with cats. You’re here, therefore you’re in the know. Let’s move on…to donuts. They are everywhere. From fast foods sandwiched in between two of them to the strange cronut hybrid, donuts have taken the spotlight off of cupcakes (thank goodness for that). Combine the two favorites and you get something that might cause the entire world wide web to explode. Inspired by a popular anime series called One Nya Hup, these sweet kitties are adorable and probably very delicious. Unfortunately, they are only going to be available in Japan. For now.

Lost Egyptian City Discovered Beneath The Sea After 1,200 Years

But this is one story that isn’t fantasy, in fact you could say it truly is the stuff of dreams. Originally called ‘Heracleion’ by the Greeks but named ‘Thonis’ by the ancient Egyptians, the existence of the mythical city was confirmed to be true when in 2000, Dr. Frank Goddio (an underwater archaeologist) made one of the most important discoveries of the 21st century.

Makeup Artist Transforms Herself Into Pop Culture Icons
12 aug 2013 13:55
Self-taught makeup artist Carly Paige transforms herself into various pop culture icons. There are no limitations to her list of subjects as she tackles all shapes, forms, ages, races, and genders. From Angelina Jolie and Pamela Anderson to Michael Jackson and Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, the Montreal-based creative manages to reproduce the image of some of the world's biggest celebrities with her raw talent and a few stylish wigs. Paige thoroughly researches each of her subjects, saying, "I spend a while studying at least three different shots of someone. One for their face shape, one for their make-up or style, and one for their expression. Kim Kardashian's expression was really funny to try to perfect." Though, she admits, "Some are really difficult, especially if I have to paint detail on my eyes or if my face shape is different. Still, once I've decided on one, I spend ages trying to get it right. It is rare that I give up on one like that." It's hard to believe that the 26-year-old only began artistically challenging herself with this personal special effects makeup project in October 2012. She continues to perfect her craft in the hopes of working on films. In the meantime, she works at Sephora, playing with potential materials for her next transformation.

So THIS Is What Wi-Fi Actually Looks Like...
05 aug 2013 13:19
These days we take Wi-Fi for granted, this invisible energy field that keeps us all constantly connected wherever we are in the world. But do you know how it was initially created? It was actually the by-product of a fail research project conducted by one John O’Sullivan an Australian radioastronomer. At the time he was trying to detect exploding mini black holes the size of an atomic particle, but instead found a solution that made wireless LAN fast and reliable. Not a bad days work in the office I’m sure you’ll agree. But if we could see it, what would Wi-Fi actually look like? Thankfully Dr. Vogel a professor and former NASA employee teamed up with visual artist Nickolay Lamm to answer just that question.

French Street Artist Loves To Hijacks Street Signs

But that hasn’t deterred French artist Clet Abraham from prowling the streets of Europe adding his own irreverent twist to traffic signs for the past 2 years. How does is he able to do it? In the depths of the night, a friend gives him a leg up and he quickly plasters the stickers onto the sign before vanishing without a trace into the shadows. Europe’s weary commuters and pedestrians then wake up to his wonderfully inventive work the following morning. His humorous and subversive designs certainly makes the roads and alleyways of Europe a lot more interesting don’t you think? Let’s keep it that way, if you have happen to catch him in the act, turn a blind eye will you?
