Hundreds of Tiny Paint Spikes Create Beautiful Patterns
05 mar 2013 10:05
You could say that Santa Barbara-based artist David Cooley only recently busted out into the art scene. (His first show was back in 2010.) Throughout the past three years, he's sharpened his skills and has honed his unique technique which involves using a small, dental instrument-type tool to create tiny "paint spikes" or dabs of paint. His mixed media pieces also consist of acrylic, spray paint, resin and even ornate fabric, which always serve as his backdrops.

Sensual Photos of the Human Body Covered in Scripture
05 mar 2013 10:04
Israeli artist Ronit Bigal meticulously presents excerpts from sacred Biblical texts on the human body in her Body Scripture II series. Like Allan Teger's Bodyscapes, Bigal gets in close to the contours of the human form, re-imagining the body as an abstract landscape. On the grooved, fleshy expanse, the artist systematically applies black Indian ink calligraphy in Hebrew that reveals passages of scripture.

Pink Lake Hillier in Australia
05 mar 2013 10:00
Lake Hillier is a pink-colored lake on Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia. From above the lake appears a solid bubble gum pink. It is such a significant distinguishing feature of the archipelago that air passengers often crane their necks to take a glimpse of it. The lake is about 600 meters long, and is surrounded by a rim of sand and a dense woodland of paperbark and eucalyptus trees. A narrow strip of sand dunes covered by vegetation separates it to the north from the Southern Ocean.

Malleable Paper Sculptures by Li Hongbo
05 mar 2013 09:56
Li Hongbo is a Chinese artist currently living and working in Beijing. Born in 1974 in Siping City, Jilin, China, Li has always had a deep fascination with paper and it’s properties. “You can never predict what it will become in the end,” Li says of paper. In a recent solo exhibition entitled, Pure White Paper, at the Dominik Mersch Gallery, Li displayed dozens of his sculptures, meticulously crafted from thousands of individual sheets of paper, glued together to create a a kind of ‘honeycomb’ structure that makes the sculptures entirely malleable and flexible. Be sure to check out the animated gifs and videos below to see these transformative works in action. For more still imagery, you can find a larger gallery at the Dominik Mersch website.

Powerful Pen and Dripping Ink Drawings on Pages of Vintage Books
05 mar 2013 09:35
Queensland, Australia-based artist Loui Jover creates striking artworks by using pen and dripping ink on pages of vintage books. While many of his pieces show the complicated emotions on a woman's face, Jover is equally adept at creating romantic love scenes of faceless silhouettes. Of course, his most powerful works are the ones where the ink drops in just the right places, at times resembling a small but noticeably stream of tears that silently fall on a distressed woman's face. Jover creates his pen and ink drawings on vintage book paper because he believes that it adds to the fragility of the works, saying "the wind may blow them away at any moment." Also, juxtaposing the stark black lines with the intricate printed words offers "a strange fusion and depth that seems to give the images a kind of 'meaning' and back story, even though unconnected in a contrived way."

Giant Matchsticks Feature Eerie Human Faces
05 mar 2013 09:34
Using thick pieces of lumber as the foundation for this site-specific installation, entitled Matchstick Men, German artist Wolfgang Stiller developed a series of giant matchsticks that feature ghostly, charred faces sculpted into one end. The distinct shapes were formed with head molds that the artist had laying around his studio, and they are meant to look as if they simply emerged in the wood after burning each flammable tip. The series includes a variety of bent, warped, and burnt pieces that evoke a strikingly emotional response. Stiller leaves creative interpretation up to the viewer, but regardless of opinion, the strewn matches have hauntingly unsettling references to death and mortality.
