Blending Scenes from WWII into Present Day

Sergey Larenkov is a Russian-based artist/photographer who was deeply impacted by World War II. On his Live Journal blog, the Saint Petersburg native has put together a tremendous set of collages of historic World War II photographs blended into the same locations as they currently look today. Through collaboratiion with the the State Museum of History of St. Petersburg and the Russian State Documentary Film & Photo Archive, in Krasnogorsk; Sergey then travelled to various battle scenes from World War II, snapping a picture in present day for his blended collages. Sergey has travelled to Paris, Berlin, Prague and around Russia, revisiting historic war sites. By snapping these locations from a similar angle as the original war photographs, we get a chilling glimpse into a very different and scary time.

New York inmates help build ice palace in Adirondacks

It’s a far cry from breaking rocks in the hot sun on a chain gang. In New York’s Adirondack Mountains, inmates break ice on a frozen lake to make a giant winter palace. A work crew from an area “shock” prison camp once again this year helped local volunteers create this mountain village’s lakeside ice palace — the shimmering centerpiece of the annual Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, starting Friday.

Photorealistic Paintings: Gazing Through a Steamy Shower

Brooklyn-based painter Alyssa Monks simulates a distorted view of people as seen through a steamy glass pane, condensed with water droplets. Monks' expressive and somewhat sensual body of work showcases her masterful abilities at producing photorealistic oil paintings while simultaneously featuring an artistic point of view. By creating a humid environment beyond a separating translucent surface for her subjects to hide behind, peer through, and push up against, the painter increases the ways in which she can play with shape and form; thereby, piquing the audience's interest.

Haitian amputee makes comeback on dance floor

Georges Exantus thought he'd never dance again. He was lucky just to be alive. The earthquake three years ago in Haiti's capital flattened the apartment where he was living and he spent three days trapped under jagged rubble. After friends dug him out, doctors amputated his right leg just below the knee. Israeli doctors and physical therapists who came to Haiti after the quake sent him to Israel for surgery and rehabilitation. Three years later, the 31-year-old professional dancer is back on the floor, spinning away as he does the salsa, cha-cha and samba. A prosthetic leg doesn't hold him back.

Flickers of light dance across the floor, walls, and ceiling of any room that holds this Sparkle Palace Cocktail Table by John Foster. The unique table design consists of transparent glass, cut into geometric prisms, and arranged into two tiers. Layered in between the prisms are one large and one small glass tabletop surface. As light passes through the colorful glass, scatters of triangular light cover the walls in a beautiful and unpredictable display.

The Hill of Crosses

It sounds like a cheap Hollywood horror movie, but Hill of Crosses is a real place - a site of pilgrimage actually – located about 12 km north of the city of Siauliai, in northern Lithuania. Standing upon a small hill are many hundreds of thousands of crosses that represent Christian devotion and a memorial to Lithuanian national identity. The precise origin of the practice of leaving crosses on the hill is uncertain, but it is believed that the first crosses were placed on the former Jurgaičiai or Domantai hill fort after the 1831 Uprising. Over the centuries, not only crosses, but giant crucifixes, carvings of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. It is estimated that there are over 100,000 crosses on the hill.

The face of Richard III

This is the face of Richard III, reconstructed from the skull found beneath a social services car park that was yesterday confirmed as that of the last Plantagenet king. The facial reconstruction is to be released following the confirmation that the skeleton unearthed in Leicester was that of the king killed in battle more than 500 years ago. The image is based on a CT scan taken by experts at the University of Leicester, who discovered the king's skeleton with the help of the Richard III Society during an archaeological dig last September.

Tracy Morgan is Mio (un)Fit In Hilarious Super Bowl Commercial

Mio Fit’s Super Bowl commercial features Tracy Morgan advocating the American knack for change, a move that effectively makes the whole situation absurd. Also, we find Tracy to be an interesting choice–since it is in fact a “sports” drink, maybe they should’ve made some kind of nod towards athleticism other than stuffing the former Tracy Jordan into a tracksuit. Still, if the point is that other sports drinks are boring, perhaps they’ve made the right choice. We for one would love to see Tracy Morgan endorse more products now that ’30 Rock’ has wrapped up. Maybe he could film one of those “Drink Responsibly” ads while wearing his Tracy Jordan ankle bracelet? Or join Jane Krakowski in those Tropicana ads. We want a ’30 Rock’ reunion, is what we’re saying.
