1,000 Beautiful Bioluminescent Leaves Radiate at Night
18 jan 2013 00:25
Using her own resin and non-toxic phosphorescence concoction, artist Miya Ando has coated 1,000 leaves and set them afloat in a pond in Puerto Rico. We've seen bioluminescent bodies of water radiating a brilliant sapphire hue against the night sky in the past, but Ando takes this natural occurrence and manually transfers the luminous beauty of bioluminescence in her public art project titled Obon [Puerto Rico]. During the day, the leaves' layered skin absorbs sunlight energy, which translates at night into a gorgeous path of drifting blue lights.

Surreal Dreamers Wandering on Public Streets
18 jan 2013 00:22
Surreal Streets is a series by French photographer Julie de Waroquier that explores the way the modern dreamer's private aspirations merge with the unforgiving reality of public streets. Anonymity becomes more and more a distant part of history with each passing day as people are expected to share themselves and their goals on public grounds. The photographer says, "In our society, our private and personal identities are built in public spaces, especially in the streets, theatres of our lives… I [want] to show how someone can build his/her inner identity in a world in which almost everything is public."

Nerve-Racking Self-Portraits of a Girl on the Edge
18 jan 2013 00:14
Korean photographer Ahn Jun's Self-Portrait project features the dainty photographer on the ledge of some dangerously imposing buildings. We've seen our fair share of daredevils dangling off the ledge of towering structures, but there's something darker about Ahn's photography. The series appears to be a reflection of urban life from the somber perspective of an isolated girl amidst a jungle of concrete buildings.

Research Found PVC Plastic To Cause Excessive Fat Storage!
17 jan 2013 16:37

New research found that being exposed to PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic, commonly known as Vinyl can lead to fat storage predisposition. "The study published in Environmental Health Perspectives, exposed pregnant mice to (TBT) a chemical found in PVC plastic and marine hull paint". This resulted in children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of the mice to express fat specific genes, and retain fat in body and liver even though they weren't exposed to PVC. It's not known for sure that people react the same to the chemical yet, but the probabiliy is big. PVC can be found in food packaging, like meat, and cheese wraps, cookie and cereal boxes, candy wrappers, water bottles etc. as well as many boxes for electronics, toys and other devices.

The Mega Plane That Could Have Ended WWII
17 jan 2013 12:00

By the 1930s, the Russian army had only begun exploring the idea of large planes. At the time, the belief was that the aircraft should have as many propellers as possible in order to carry the massive metallic beast into the air (jet propulsion had not been discovered). Very few photos were salvaged from those top-secret times, but the recent re-discovery of this photograph assures us of the actual existance of the rumored Russian heavy bomber K-7. A reconstruction of a life size model is underway.

Worlds Largest Nesting Doll
16 jan 2013 16:48

According to Guiness World Records, the largest set of Russian dolls is a 51-piece set hand-painted by Youlia Bereznitskaia (Russia). The largest measures 1 ft 9.25 in (53.97 cm) in height, the smallest 0.125 in (0.31 cm) in height. The set was completed on 25 April 2003.

When all 51 pieces are lined up together touching, they measure 11 ft 2.25 in length. To break this record both the number of dolls in the set and the height of the tallest must be broken.

The other giant Matryoshka doll you see in what appears to be somekind of town center is actually in Taowa Square in Manzhouli, China. The doll in the center is 100 feet high and presides over a square full of matryoshka-themed souvenir shops. Sounds like heaven to me, except for the part about it being in Mongolia.
