Colorful Examples of Yarn Bombing
01 mar 2013 07:30
Nowadays knitting can hardly be called a grandma’s hobby. Since 2004, it’s been developing into a new street art phenomenon – yarn bombing (or yarnstorming, guerrilla knitting, graffiti knitting and even grandma graffiti). It employs colorful knitted and crocheted yarn or fiber on different displays, such as hydrants, lampposts, mailboxes, bicycles, cars or any other ordinary urban objects. Though these yarn bombs (or yarnstorms) may last for years, they are considered non-permanent and technically illegal.

Interactive Installations from Sharp Cracks of Light
01 mar 2013 07:23
Oakland-based artist Chris Fraser has created an impressive set of sight-specific installations that all consist of sharp cracks of light. He strategically creates holes or slits in walls, coaxing light into various formations. His works are often interactive, providing the viewer with a memorable and unique experience. In the Make has a great interview with Fraser where he describes his creative process and what he hopes to accomplish as an artist. "I would like my work to point back into the world. I spend a lot of time crafting specific situations, framing light in such a way that it reveals a portion of the complex order within the ambient environment. But there is nothing particularly special about the light that enters these works. Echoes of this same order can be found in your home, entering your windows, skirting around furniture, slipping through a crack in the door. I want to call attention to a type of beauty that usually goes unnoticed."

Concrete Charm in the Rain by Christophe Jacrot
01 mar 2013 06:44
Photographer Christophe Jacrot says “there are two ways of capturing the world for a photographer; on the one hand grasping its horror, and on the other sublimating it.” Christophe chooses the second option and takes pictures in rainy, snowy or otherwise bad weather as it “awakens a feeling of romantic fiction“, reserving the glimpse of the world through the photo-camera’s lens in an imposing and noble way. Capturing cities in rain might unveil a whole new urban perspective to most of us, as generally we try to hurry and hide away from it, without paying much attention to what the world looks like in bad weather. “This universe escapes most of us, since we are too occupied getting undercover. Man becomes a ghostly silhouette wandering and obeying the hazards of rain or of snow, into the eternity of the climate,” – says Christophe. Christophe Jacrot’s artistic target is mostly various cities. And the background or the surrounding aura, so to say, is always the same – nature’s elements in action. The photographer has traveled the world to unveil the beauty of the biggest concrete cities, such as New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong,Paris, etc. Here you can admire the assorted pictures from Jacrot’s portfolio in the rain.

Majestic Waterfall Paintings Evoke Sense of Calm
01 mar 2013 06:19
Japanese painter Hiroshi Senju makes large scale paintings of waterfalls using interesting materials and an age old technique. His method involves creating paints by grinding mineral pigments from natural materials like stone, shell and corals into powder, binding them with animal-hide glue, and then, with extreme delicacy, pouring this paint onto Japanese mulberry paper. This approach takes from the thousand-year-old Nihonga style of painting, which emphasizes natural materials.

Electric Blossom: An Ethereal Distortion of Nature
01 mar 2013 04:12
New York-based fashion photographer Torkil Gudnason is known for his ability to blur the line between fashion and art. He believes that editorial work "is a process of attrition: if the image outlives its commercial purpose (and what is fashion if not fleeting) then all that is left, for better or worse, is the art." Along with his extensive fashion portfolio, the talented photographer also explores personal projects as an outlet from his many commercial assignments.
