Pulling the world apart, one animal at a time
23 aug 2013 11:40

The street artist going by the name of Nychos didn’t have what we’d call a ‘normal’ upbringing. He was born into an Austrian hunting family in South Africa and spent much of his childhood seeing things which many ‘normal’ people would consider cruel or even brutal. For Nychos though, it was a fascinating world. At seven he was bitten by a boar while he was playing in the forest close to home. Just a little while later he had boar meat for lunch. In another instance he saw a dead baby lamb being consumed by maggots the same color as its fur. Instead of being horrified, he was fascinated. He studied the hidden insides of animals and noticed the way life often grows from other life. At the same time he was also a child of the 80s, growing up watching cartoons and being influenced by their flashy bright colors.

Internet Logo Designs Transformed Into Fashion
23 aug 2013 11:33

In this series, California-based photographer Viktorija Pashuta transformed a variety of web browser icons into trendy fashion statements. The Latvian fashion photographer has always wondered What if girls were internet browsers?, and so, the project brings that vision to life through a creative interpretation of the notable logos. To develop the project, Pashuta envisioned each browser with certain characteristics based on the styles of the popular symbols. She developed ensembles based off of these personifications and chose models Kaylen Dao, Brittany Ryan, Clancy McClain, Tracy Acholonu, and Polina Frantsena to don the inventive garb.

Street Artist Turns Found Garbage Into Quirky Characters
23 aug 2013 11:29

Street artist Francisco de Pájaro (aka “Art Is Trash”) takes piles of garbage found on the street and turns it into quirky art by painting faces and arranging it in humorous ways. The Spanish-born artist recently hit the streets of London and created a series with that city’s trash. Global Street Art’s James Buxton recently interviewed Pájaro for Société Perrier and quotes him, “We consume a lot, and rubbish is part of that, it’s people wasting things. There’s a romantic aspect, somebody’s given it up, they don’t want it, because one little bit is broken, because they don’t want to fix it, that’s the Capitalist mindset, so I give it life, so there’s a sensitive and romantic side to the work. It’s not all about monsters and nightmares in the work. Even when I’m making monsters, I’m taking things and bringing them back to life, giving them meaning.” Pájaro is currently exhibiting at a solo show titled “Police & Horse” at West Bank London Art in West London’s Notting Hill.

Toy Story Meets The Shining
21 aug 2013 11:50

The third Toy Story movie went to some dark places, but it didn’t go all the way to the alcoholic murder hotel. Artist Kyle Lambert rectifies that obvious oversight with his digital paintings, which cast Pixar’s talking toys as characters from Stanley Kubrick’s horror classic The Shining. See what happens when all work and no play makes Woody a dull toy. Lambert explains that he created this series after reading Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich’s tweets about The Shining, which Unkrich says inspired him to become a filmmaker. After creating these paintings on the iPad Brushes app, he printed a poster of the entire series, which he gave to Unkrich. Fortunately, he’s also released all 25 images online.

Crocheting a Locomotive in Lodz, Poland
21 aug 2013 11:45

Although currently living in the United States, crochet artist Olek recently returned to her native country of Poland for an epic project. Over the course of two straight (and rainy) days, Olek and her team of four assistants ‘yarn bombed’ an entire locomotive with two freight cars in tow. Olek had already crocheted many of the panels beforehand but they still had to be assembled to cover the train. The team worked through the night to pull off the massive undertaking, debuting the crocheted train on July 13th. It will be on display in Lodz, Poland, until August 19th. The project was done in collaboration with the city and was authorized. She calls the piece ‘Deadly Romance’.

Dr. Seuss Body Art
21 aug 2013 11:27

Make up artist Lex Fleming did this series of Dr. Seuss body art. She’s got One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, The Cat In The Hat, The Lorax, and more! They’re all super impressive not to mention incredibly nostalgic. Reminds me of my pappy learning me how to read all those years ago. I was a late bloomer, so like, two, maybe three years ago. But I’m not ashamed. As they say: better late than never. Or as pappy used to tell me: you aren’t getting any younger and you were never that good looking to start off with. Maybe it’s time you learned how to read.

There are several primate sanctuaries around the country that are home to chimpanzees who have retired from “careers” in entertainment and medical research. If they seem interested, many of these chimps are allowed to paint.

To raise awareness and funds, The Humane Society is holding a contest for six of these artists. Here are the animals and their masterpieces…

Arroyo Grande, California-based artist Mark Bryan has created a surreal collection of sci-fi themed oil paintings titled Things From Space. The paintings portray a futuristic vision of Earth that is under attack by monstrous alien robots and UFOs. In a few of his pieces, Mark mixes in pop culture icons who are either helping to protect us (Mona Lisa) or are one of the many helpless victims (Bambi). Prints are available to purchase online via Mark’s Imagekind store.

These Photos Look Kinda Fishy
14 aug 2013 12:58

What do most people do with fish they bring home from the market? If you’re normal you’d probably gut it and eat. (Actually if you’re really normal you buy that stuff pre-cut so you don’t ever have to look at their cold dead eyes staring back at you.) If you’re… not so normal like Paris based artist Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard, you might make a weird-ass photo series of fish working on assembly lines or in laboratories. The series is called “Les Temps Modernes” (Modern Times in English) probably because in these modern times no one’s going to question your sanity for doing something like dressing up little fishies and taking pictures of them.
