Over the last 5 or 6 years I have explored the creative process within the constraints of the wooden spoon. The making of wooden spoons dates back to antiquity and the design possibilities are still limitless. Some of the spoons I carve are functional, meant to be used in the kitchen, but the majority of them are nonfunctional and even dysfunctional.

My name is Tom Lynall and I carve small pencil sculptures for a hobby. I am from Birmingham, UK and have been a jeweler for 11 years. In November last year I was sitting in my workshop and picked a pencil and thought I’d carve a little heart into the tip, little did I know this would start me off on one of the most engrossing hobbies I have ever had.

His job entailed cutting slices into bamboo leaves. As practice, he would go home and use a utility knife to carve various patterns into paper. Now, the 47-year-old's paper-cut designs are so intricate that many of them look like thin ink scribbles.
