Trees Are Framed by Giant Canvas Backdrops in Photo Series
02 sep 2013 10:57

South Korean artist Myoung Ho Lee hangs enormous canvases behind trees, creating a real world backdrop for his photo series, “Tree.” Lee digitally removes the cranes and other equipment used to erect the canvases for an effect that is both simple and surreal. He has been taking the photos around the South Korean countryside for the past ten years. For more on Lee’s series, see this New York Times interactive feature.

Surreal Floating Room Sculptures by Leandro Erlich
02 sep 2013 11:42

Like a scene from a fantasy movie, a dilapidated room that appears to have been literally ripped out of a building remains suspended in mid air above Nantes, France. Its walls were torn apart, revealing bricks below the plaster, and wood floors reveal the joists inside. The floating room is accessible via a ladder. The gravity defying surreal installation is the work of Argentinean artist Leandro Erlich. The large-scale piece, called “Monte-meubles – L’ultime déménagement” (literally - The Furniture Lift – The Ultimate Moving Out), was created for the biannual Le Voyage a Nantes, an art festival which turns the entire French city into an art gallery.

Hidden 19th Century Fore-Edge Paintings Found on the Pages of a Book
03 sep 2013 10:17

While most of us know that some of the greatest treasures can be found in books, turns out that sometimes they also appear on the fore-edges of the pages. Recently Colleen Theisen shared a gif she made, showing an amazing example of fore-edge painting on the side of the book from 1873. The painting was found on the edge of Robert Mudie’s book Autumn at the Special Collections & University Archives at the University of Iowa. Fore-edge painting dates back to 1650′s, and is a technique when a picture is drawn on the edge of the book pages. Sometimes the image can be seen when the book is closed, sometimes the pages have to be slightly fanned out.

Old Relics Create a Visual History of Our Past
04 sep 2013 13:43

As the digital age continues to dominate our world, from smart phones to 3D TVs to everything in between, the days of typewriters and rotary dial phones are moving further and further into the past. In honor of a more simple time, artist Robert Moran created this series entitled Relics. For each image, he isolated old fashioned objects and documented them as a type of visual record. The Maine-based photographer created the project to preserve the memory of inventions that have provided a foundation for today's high-speed technology. The centrally placed antiques are illuminated with strong lighting, which produces dramatic shadows that fall onto the wall behind. In each photograph, Moran provides his viewers with a peaceful moment to ponder the original function of each vintage machine, to investigate the scratches, cracks, and wear and tear, and to consider how the items have affected our everyday world.

China’s Cliffside Plank Path Will Give you Goose Bumps
04 sep 2013 13:49

Hua Shan is a mountain located near the city of Huayin in Shaanxi province, about 120 kilometres (75 mi) east of Xi’an. It is one of China’s Five Great Mountains and has a long history of religious significance. Hua Shan is classified as having five main peaks, of which the highest is the South Peak at 2,154.9 meters (7,070 ft). It is on South Peak where you will find the famous Cliffside Plank Path. The exhilarating mountain hike is not for the faint of heart. There is a cost of approximately 30 yuan (just under $5 usd) and you are given two straps to hook onto wires on the path. The plank path includes steel rod ladders, footholds carved out of the cliff and narrow wooden plank walks. All of this is located thousands of feet above ground (check out the video at the bottom for a first-person POV).

Stills from the Lion King vs A Real Life Safari
04 sep 2013 13:58

Redditor and fellow Canadian Brandon Heuser recently took the trip of a lifetime to the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. After returning to his hometown of Vancouver, he decided to rewatch Disney’s The Lion King. Throughout the film he caught himself saying, “hey I have a photo like that!”. Feeling inspired, he decided to take stills from the movie and compare them to photos he had taken on his trip. The results were shared last month on Reddit. The accompanying 24-picture album on Imgur has been viewed over 350,000 times since. While not every shot is ‘identical’ (e.g., Rafiki is a mandrill not a baboon) the similarities are quite astounding.

The Video For Empire Of The Sun's 'DNA' Is Delightful And Wacky

And I absolutely love this song, “DNA.” In the video for it embedded above, they ride bikes and buses around LA at night, crash a late night pool party and get arrested by LAPD. It’s awesome, and, like the song, it makes me happy. So EAT IT, DAFT PUNK!

The 16 Best Lines From The Season Premiere Of FXX's 'The League'
05 sep 2013 10:46

New station, new night, same old The League. Last night’s premiere of the FXX series may not have been as good as some of the best episodes of the series, but it was good to have the gang back in our lives (and as importantly, it signaled the arrival of fantasy football season). The premiere tried to do what last season’s rape joke episode did in taking something that would seem off limits, in the case AIDS, and turn it into a recurring punchline. The results were mixed to good, although the episode — as usual — hit its highs when Rafi was onscreen. He got an assist from Seth Rogen’s Dirty Randy (and Rob Huebel) and the Domination League (making us all the more excited for Dirty Randy and Rafi’s episode later this season). Here were the 17 best lines from the episode, and as always in The League discussions, if you leave a comment or share the post, you get a The League badge.

Beatles 'Abbey Road' Medley Isolated Vocals Track
05 sep 2013 10:47

The Abbey Road medley is the musical equivalent of goulash. It’s made with a little bit of everything, including leftover tracks from the White Album and Let It Be sessions, most of which were written by Paul McCartney. It’s also notable because “The End” contains Ringo Starr’s only drum solo as a Beatle. Meaning, because Abbey Road was recorded after Let It Be, Ringo had to wait until the penultimate Beatles song to show off his skills…on a song called “The End.” And now that someone has removed all those pesky instruments from the medley, leaving only Paul and John’s vocals, it’s as if Ringo’s greatest accomplishment never happened. He is the Charlie Brown of people.

Surreally Absurd GIFs by Bill Domonkos
05 sep 2013 12:57

Visual artist and experimental filmmaker Bill Domonkos manipulates archive photos and old film footage into surreally absurd gifs. The multifaceted artist's otherworldly creations reflect his fascination with repurposing and combining moving images of yesteryear. Each gif is wackier than the next, presenting a wild scene clearly accomplished with digital editing and special effects. Domonkos' affinity for working with vintage, black and white images adds to the curious nature of his work. His altered take on the past is like one big sci-fi experiment, reminiscent of early avant-garde cinema. Instead of a simple portrait of a woman's profile, the artist adds his creative touch to simulate a kinetic mechanism running endlessly on a her headgear. In Domonkos' world, it is almost fitting that a projection of a jockey riding his race horse plays on a loop in a sink bowl.

For an odd yet impressive series of images, photographer Joseph Ford combined some of his aerial photography with images of clothing so that elements of each photo flowed seamlessly into the other. Some are as simple as one square in a picture of a flannel shirt lining up with a roofline in the aerial shot. Others are more complex — dunes in a desert matching up with wrinkles on a sweater…

Epic Movie Trailer Narrator Pranks Hapless Pedestrians

The folks at Break partnered up with the guy who narrates all of the Honest Trailers to have a little fun. Using a headset to provide some dialogue, the narrator trailed behind people walking down the sidewalk and gave their lives a little voice over action. Fortunately for the narrator, nobody decided to punch him in the face. We thought it might happen. Guess *that* joke was on us.

The 5 Least Likely 'Breaking Bad' Spinoffs

AMC’s hit show ‘Breaking Bad’ is drawing to a close. Perhaps to the dismay of some selfish fans out there, ‘Breaking Bad’ creator Vince Gilligan correctly refused to produce integrity-killing plotlines (i.e. like how Pam and Jim get married on ‘The Office’) to further line his pockets with more dough. The only scenario more doubtful than Gilligan extending the life of his masterpiece would be creating a series of spinoffs. Below are the five least likely ‘Breaking Bad’ spinoffs.
